I remember driving westwards here and being in shock at the 6 lane new design, as I had been under the impression the highway would only widen much closer to Windsor. The 110km/h limit was an even greater surprise, after driving two hours in a relatively empty section with a 100 limit. The changes were desperately needed, as you talked about. The 401 is quite ruthless by Canadian standards. Great video!
It’s funny, cause also I filmed this stretch three days before you did. It was nice to finally see the Herb Gray Pkwy and the Gordie Howe Bridge progress, having never been to Windsor prior. Nice work on the video!
Great drive! I know user comment mentioned about old rounded truss gantries that used in Ontario but I forget what video that was. The rounded truss gantries is very common in Japan in and no plans to replace it. They use the same design from Pennsylvania. The rounded truss gantries is also use in some other Asian countries as well mostly on expressway but not exact same design from Pennsylvania or Ontario. I know this because I drove Japanese expressway (pre-paramedic) before and I saw many rounded truss gantries sign.
If you are traveling eastbound once the new bridge is completed the Ministry of Transportation needs to put in a sign think metric 70 mph = 110 kmh because it's the rule for every border crossing in the province of Ontario with the United States to include those signs. On the WB 401 via Gordie Howe Br Michigan should do the same mph with Kmh conversion 75 mph 120 kmh 60 mph 100 kmh. 🇺🇲 plates wise this segment of 401 sees Illinois Indiana Michigan Ohio Wisconsin Minnesota and The Dakotas misery because this section of the freeway is closer to them unlike the Eastern section which has NY NJ PA RI MA ME NH plates.
They used to put those “Think Metric” signs back in 2000’s, but they were taken down few years ago due to it being too costly to make each sign. Also there’s Google Maps which shows speed conversion anyways!
I almost always take the 401 to the tunnel when I cross into Michigan. I don't really have a good reason why, but I generally prefer taking the 401 vs. the 402 when I drive to Michigan. I really enjoy driving in Michigan for the record as well. Thanks for the comment.
It's cool to see the completion of the widening of Hwy 401 throught Tillbury. There were actually a lot of collisions on this route between London & Widsor. It also was oftenly touted as ''The Killer Highway'' but ''The Carnage Alley'' is the most popular one. I honestly think that the video wasn't recorded in 2022, as the widening throught Tillbury hasn't been completed yet. But still, the wheater was certainly really exellent for a nice summer road trip & the music fits with the summer theme really well Also, right now in Quebec & Ontario, mostly during the Ottawa/Gatineau aera, the weather is going quite crazy right now, we for example have, heavy rain, hail, floods & strong winds. Definitely not the best time to go travelling on the roads 😒
Nice update of this video conpared to the one in 2019. Also, 10:03 there is a mistake about the credits and title about the year number. Was it filmed in 2022 or 2023?
They have erected maybe half the spans across the river now. Both of the towers are basically complete. You can see the bridge in the first title splash for the video. Thanks for the comment.
