ALPR: Automatic License Plate Recognition.

In a nutshell, this very modern (and I guess damn expensive as well) on-board computer system will check for the following convictions stored in the Ontario DOT database:
• plates on vehicles that are registered to suspended drivers
• plates associated with stolen vehicles
• plates reported stolen or missing
• plates with expired validation tags
• plates that have been suspended
• unissued plates reported stolen
• missing stock or spoiled plates never issued
OPP is the only Police Force in Ontario allowed to use such technology, for now of course, therefore IF you fall into any of the categories listed above, just do not use the roads patrolled by OPP and you'll be just fine.
Apparently driving w/o valid auto insurance is NOT part of the ALPR System. Reason: insurance companies are not required by law to update DOT's database on any policy cancellation or termination.

Got to love this type of video - gives away cop technology information. This video told you two things: - It is infra-red based; - It is connected to a database (by radio) for information. . This means it can be blinded using an infra-red 'dazzler' (which are invisible) or using a paint that renders plates unreadable or gives the wrong info. . The data channels are easily jammed, which prevents data being transmitted. . Of course it helps if you are an electronics technician!

Yeah the one thing I'm not sure if I'm okay with is transmission over Radio. I'm just a lowly Infosys guy but you and Chris seem knowledgeable enough to clarify. Is the database query being run over open air in an unencrypted manor or is it secure? If not is the information being queried already open information? If so I'd like to know if I can be pointed to the documentation and/or API...if the bad guys can get ahold of it so easy I'm sure you wouldn't mind little ol' white hat me playing with it right?

This technology was first used in Canada at the Olympic Games in BC. Downloaded with current information every shift it provides instant recognition. It really is a great tool for enforcing the laws broken by offenders.

Mississuaga, Hamilton, GTA are now crawling with ALPR-equipped cruisers. If you're on a main thoroughfare with an expired plate in any of these cities, you WILL ABSOLUTELY get caught.

The RCMP uses this system as well. The system is being used in British Columbia as well. ICBC will tags alerts to plates of suspended driver's license, no driver's license,. Or habitual drinking and drivers. British Columbia was the first province in Canada to utilize. They started using it 12 years ago.

Only police vehicles that look like the one in this video. Ordinary police cruisers regardless the jurisdiction (OPP or Toronto, York, Durham, Peel, Hamilton Police, etc.), straight answer is NO. Be safe out there.

Yes they are. My insurance company canceled my insurance fur to a processing error, and i was pulled over on Hurontario by OPP for no insurance. Luckily the insurance company addmited its fault and a letter was sent to the court house and my charge was dropped. But yes. As soon as the OPP SUV was behind me. He immediately put on his lights and pulled me over.

If you're in British Columbia. They use this system as well. And in BC they CAN see if your insurance is valid. It is very big problem people driving without insurance, it is also a criminal offense, and I would say it is worse than driving without a driver's license.

real living - if this offends you, you probably shouldn't be driving. Do you have a valid license? Do you have valid insurance? Are your vehicle plates fine? If you answered no to any one of those three questions you shouldn't be on the road.

Let's just say you're working at your office job and they don't allow you to use your computer. The principles are the same, they train their officers and certify them to use such devices on the road. Politicians make the rules, not them.

They don't use it while they're in motion. They use it when stopped or parked. While it may be illegal to use a device for a civilian, they can do it because it's part of their job. Now if you suggest they don't use laptops, then go ahead and propose a better idea.

we need the exact same system to warn the public,,,,,,,,,more police drive yes drive drunk then your avg public this is a fact. Please remember that every hour you work pays for a safety and a wage so he can feed his family with honesty. A ny officer not serving you as his wage payer can be brought to a public recognition in anyway see fit.

why do we need the officer---if computer spots the violation--why not auto-send him a ticket. Red light cameras dont need a cop to issue a ticket. Same thing here.......ROBO COP

just another way to get money froom you!..cop said "ppl are bad drivers or they wouldnt b suspended" so not true in so many cases..like ppl cant pay over price fines. and the fines only stop the poor ppl from driving there the ones that have to choose to pay fines or buy food!..a rich guy just pays it and keeps laughing on

An easy way to avoid being "targeted" by this particular license plate-recognition system: a) valid car insurance and license plate stickers OR b) never drive on roads patrolled by OPP as they are the only Ontario Police jurisdiction equipped with such modern technology.

"Not all police have access to that information" In Ontario, only OPP is equipped with this type of modern technology, therefore if you drive in areas not enforced by OPP, you don't have to worry of any of those infractions this system properly or wrongly detects. Drive safely.

I believe you cause I guess you live and drive in that particular Northern Ontario area, personally I don't. Toronto Police Service, the largest municipal police force in the country, does not have this ALPR system installed in any of their cruisers nor I've witnessed it with my own eyes anywhere in S Ontario except areas under OPP jurisdiction.
