It looked like you hit the section of blade between the handle and the log, which seemed almost rock hard. A shame it broke but I wouldn't baton that way, you should only really hit directly above the log or the part of the knife on the far side of the log not the inside (handle side). If you have to hit on the inside/handle side to level the knife out I'd let go of the handle so you aren't holding the handle up while hitting the blade down. Until the blade is buried fully in the wood you should always hit the blade directly over the material you want it to be splitting. Just my thoughts. Still surprised it broke, maybe a bad heat treat. I have a handful of Ontarios and their QC is very spotty. I've batoned a ton with my SP-1 which is similar to the SP-6 and it's held up.
Yes, I’m in between the err of my holding it and the heat treatment. Usually I only hit there to level or when I run out of blade on the other side, and I’ve abused far cheaper blades worse. Check out my Uncle Henry Bowie review and others lol. Love my Sp10 Marine Raider. It’s my go to so I’m pretty shocked. They are sending me a new knife and we will conduct the same test!
Agree, the logs were cut with a chainsaw to get them short and square but then someone uses a knife to split it? If I'm going camping I'll take the right tools.
Actually, if the sheath is all Nylon, there are fabric paints you can buy that are water proof and color fast. Or if you know what your doing, make a leather sheath :) Okay I will stop being a wise ass :)
I’ve found some aftermarket kydex guys, but I would like a $12.00 option similar to a Kabar sheath! I’ll look into and post another review down the road!
Thats pretty surprising. I have the OKC's Marine Raider Bowie...its a BIG heavy chunk of steel...but I have used and abused that thing over the past year and its held up really well...I don't live the blade grind on it... wish it had more of a true saber grind but its a monster. I guess I know not to get this one! Lol
Okay, I just found my next knife, the Mini Supreme Khukuri, from my favorite maker in Kathmandu, Nepal. It has an 8 inch blade, and is only like 2 ounces more then the SP-6, and I know it is full tang. Yes it will cost more, but I know it will never fail :)

Those Rat knives are getting up there now. They used to be a banging deal. If you want quality, I would recommend ESSE knives, for just a bit more per knife. I will say Ontario Customer Service is excellent, and they shipped me a new knife right away that i will be retesting. This could have been a one off..
I had one of these but gave it to a good buddy who didn't have a good fixed blade. I put it thru the ringer and it never failed. I will say it is meant to be a combat knife. I managed to chop, baton, carve, and make fire with it but it was not the best for those tasks by any means. It did it tho. Just curious, how long did it take customer service to replace your knife? I'm try to get em to replace my sp5

Shit brother...i never expected this! I have only good experiences with Ontario.. Ok..this is a combat knife but i do this kind of things with all my Ontario knives..never i broke one.. Could it be you have a lemon? I always thought this was a great strong knife.. Thanks for this honest review. Stay save!
I’m pretty sure it was a one off Ontario was super nice to me and sent me a warranty knife without question I promised them I would send this one back so their warranty team could review it. Hopefully they will get back to me if it was a one off either way I will be redoing the review to see how it holds up.
I emailed Ontario and their customer service is on par! They emailed me back within a couple hours, and had a new one in the mail within 5 hours of me sending them an email. They asked I send this one in for evaluation.
I think there could be a heat treat problem as that tang was definitely wide enough to handle the stress. If you look up JOE X, he does a lot more abuse to this knife and even recommends it.
Yeah, talk about torture tests, Joe X is the King of thrashing knives, the SP6 did quite well with him, so I think it's an individual defect in the blade 🤷
You ever get another one and try it out, to make sure it wasn't a defectin that particular blade? Bro hold on to all the Ontario knives you can, they just went out of business. That sucks.
