Some Onyx Guards were jerks but the last guy that got bumped by nearly everyone seemed like he wasn’t a jerk based on his reaction and his response.

Considering hundreds if not thousands of these elite bodyguards and special forces were killed at Halvo Bay and their academy was destroyed it’s not hard to see why they softened up. They failed again and again.

I hope we get to play as full armored Onyx Guards in a future campaign

"Onyx Guards were nerfed" Through out the games, I've never seen them do one badass thing. they only appeared to be quickly killed to show how dangerous the Locust were. one would say that don't have much experience fighting the Locust, but these guys are supposed to be the most experienced and skilled of the COG, yet I see them fall as easily as a normal soldier, so it's hard for me to take them seriously. Halo made the difference between the Marines and ODST more clear. the ODST fought beside you longer and could do things that Marines couldn't, such as using Jetpacks in Reach. they went as far as having their own game and movie. if I am to take the Onyx Guard seriously, I need to actually see them pull more weight than normal soldiers. until then I just see normal troops with fancy armor and a shiny title

Am I the only one who loves the Onyx Guards (especially the new ones (plus guy who was bullied)). I loved them since 3 and pissed that they weren’t in 4. I pray they’re in 5 later on in the… operations, I believe they’re called... not sure correct me if I’m wrong. Point is… I want Newbie Guard in 5 as a playable character.

While "nerfed" (lol) the last guy who got bumped, had three lancers aimed at him and didn't show any fear, so props to him.

To me its actually the point if you look at Gears 4 they replaced most soldier by Deebees i wouldn't be surprise if many soldiers are not battleearned veteran. And the Onyx to me always fell like the running stock of the CGU the all cool looking dudes who get destroyed.

I feel bad for the onyx gaurd in the 5th game. He joined up to feel like a bad ass and he gets owned by a few vets and rebels

i miss the darker tone of gears but at the same time onyx being nurfed makes a tone of sense beacuse there was literaly only one left so none of the new ones are fully battle hardened vets yet

Honestly I'm just glad they're back. In gears 3 it was reported those Onyx Guards gaurding Prescott were the last ones alive. There was no sighn of them in Gears of war 4 but it was really amazing to have them back in gears 5 like the coalition never just forgot them or abandoned them and remembered there legends from the previous locust and Pendulum wars. Same for the company who didn't forget about them and just never put them back in a gears game. Can't wait for them to be available for multiplayer and have my boys back from Gears of war 3.

I always loved playing as the Onyx guard in GoW 3. Glad to see that they make a return.

One of the big things I feel is that the onyx guard not only suffered from lack of veterans to fill in officer slots from but also cause a lack of their advanced training so while those 2 guards were onyx they may as well have been ordinary gears wearing better Armor (presumably).

The problem when compared to normal Gears who fight and die like bosses, the Onyx Guard are seldom seen and fought to the end at Azura. Like many say in the comments, no one was ready for E-Day. Heck the main training ground for The Guard was attacked early on, specifically because of the danger they may pose. Also new Onyx are most likely not vets from Locust War. So it makes sense that they have less combat experience.

I feel like you can compare the onyx guards to the Roman praetorian guards. They are top notch soldiers and trained very well, however they lack any combat experience since they just guard high value people. As Captain Rex from the clone wars would say, “In my book, experience outranks everything.”

I like to think that Jinn doesn't have "Onyx Guard", she has soldiers with the same uniform for the sake of image, probably related to influential people who wanted the honour of serving in the guard. It would make sense given her reliance on DBs making her think they wouldn't see much use.

Nerfed? They were always cannon fodder for some reason. In Gears 3, there were quite a few Onyx Guard corpses littering Azura. In RAAM's Shadow, they were being slaughtered by the dozens. In Judgment, they were massacred in the courtroom, with the exception of Sofia, who is an Onyx Guard cadet in Baird's squad. (Oof for Sofia, though.) Now comes Gears 5, where the lot of them get eaten by the Kraken. Nothing new. They look real cool, though. So I'll still use them in MP, lol.
