I live in the south of British Columbia 🇨🇦 and my basil grows wonderfully outdoors. Even my cilantro goes outdoors among other plants that will partially shade it from the burning summer sun. I grew some lovely holy basil and I dried it. I have enough for a cup of tea. Lol!

I can grow basil outside successfully in southern Wisconsin, USA (Zone 5). I start seeds on a heat mat in April, plant out the starts on June 1. Location gets 6 hours of sun. I collect all the leaves I want & Sept 1 gather some dead flowers for seed. In spring, I spread some dead flowers on a white plate to find the teeny tiny black seeds among the chaff & start over again. I crumble dried basil into my winter pizza dough, makes it speckled and fancy lol

Hi Jessie, I live in North Kingston/Ham and grow loads of basil/ outdoor tomatoes/ cucumbers in my south-facing garden… the basil grown in pots seems to do best, and obviously needs full sun and protection from strong winds… I have grown basil from seed, but find supermarket basil potted up into good free-draining compost works best…still have several plants on the go now, which I have only just brought indoors. We are still frost free, although it did drop to 3C a few days ago. Really enjoy your channel and have learned a lot… happy autumn gardening 😊

Dahlias, or any flower that's too short for a 'cut flower' still brings me much joy in a tiny vase right next to the sink. Like you Jessie, I cherish the little joys from the garden. Sometimes that's all I get. I have just declared WAR on the HATED Aussie possums who savaged my lonely 4 beetroots that were showing promise. Badgers - possums. Different enemies. same battle. Yes, You can grow basil outside after starting them off in polytunnel. This year i grew a 12 foot by 4 foot bed of basil and have photo to prove it. It was genovese basil. Shame pine nuts are so expensive for making pesto! I live in Hampshire so probably similar if not cooler conditions than Richmond. I also bunged in carrots and i think the smell of the basil has the added benefit of keeping carrot root fly away.

20:22 I'm growing Cima di Rapa for the first time and I was a bit suspicious that I had been given the wrong seeds. Was thinking they might be mustard greens or something because my plants have huge leaves and haven't put out any flower stems. But yours looks really large too so maybe mine are OK. It's just all the videos I've watched on Cima di Rapa growing and recipes (mostly from the USA) the plants look small and look like nice small bunches of green flowers with plenty of flower stems. Mine are a 40 day one but perhaps because I planted quite late they haven't had enough warmth to start putting out flowers. Not sure. Think I'm going to buy seeds elsewhere though and try again. I've eaten some and they were pretty good though so perhaps shouldn't complain.

Jessie, when I saw your bit about the aubergine, I paused the video and ran out to check mine. I thought they were on their last leg, but rallied in the last few weeks, blooming as if their life depended on it. Lol, I have a few on my African round. We made eggplant stuffing with them. It has eggplant (diced and soaked in salt water to remove the bitter), pine nuts, bread, garlic, EVOO, crumbled feta, diced onion, diced tomatoes, cooked breakfast sausage crumbles, fresh cracked pepper and Italian seasoning (or the fresh trio from the garden. Bake until the outer bits are golden and crunchy, feta melts and eggplant cooked. Top with grated Parmesan and/or mozzarella and let melt for another five minutes. It is especially nice this time of year when the weather just changes.

I have successfully grown basil last year, I did buy the living herb pot from supermarket and split it and transplanted and they have done superbly and attracted a lot of bees. They also went on until the first frost. This year I grew them directly from seed but I only sowed them in August and they are still alive in a vertical planter. we are in Woking, Surrey, we have had 2 degrees last night and they are still going. tiny, but going. As for dahlias my favourite is Kelsey Annie Joy.

I cleared my plot (in Barnet) at the weekend (the remainder of the climbing beans, toms, courgette, uchiki kuri, masses of calendula, and some fennel that had long gone to seed), then yesterday I sowed cover crops (winter rye, vetch and field beans) on half of the beds. I’m chuffed to be so organised this year, and the compost heap is now looking extremely happy too :)

I'm in southampton and grow most of my basil (green, red and thai,) outside - always works, even this year with the cold wet summer. I grow some in the sunniest and the more shady areas just to hedge my bets, and always grow some with my outdoor tomatoes. 😊

Hello Jessie, The end of another garden season is coming to a close. For us it was very hot summer watering almost every day. Tomatoes and peppers were the winners here. My very First eggplant / aubergene ever!! We still have not had a frost yet and not in the forecast for about another 10 days. So I still have tomatoes ripening on the vine!! So I am closing all the other plant out and will be planting garlic this week. Your video was fun seeing the garden at the end of the season. I liked the field trip also you always find cool places to go to. I always grow basil out side I start with one plant and there’s a prune and pinch off pieces. I just re-plant them somewhere else so as the first plant gets very bushy lots of little plants get started everywhere else. This year for the first time I had something that ate all the basil on my deck but none in the garden. Very strange. Anyway, thank you for the video. Look forward to seeing you next week. Bye for now.

Hi Jessie, this year I grew basil from seed at the allotment, straight into soil. Not massive plants but good germination and very strong. Not as tender as the ones under cover. Caught by frost immediately at the weekend. Great for pesto. My friend gave me a bouquet of dahlias recently with firework flowers they are sublime! ❤ Happy autumn. Ps had 43 butter nut squash all decent but none huge. 😊 Vickie x

Hi Jess, I've seen many people in the US that puts heaters on their polis to extend a bit the season or help with the ripening of the fruits already there. Just a though. BTW. I've grown basil outside always and they grow magnificent but they should be in a warm spot but sheltered from the scorching temperatures, specially the midday ones. They are the best tomato companion, because tomatoes will provide some shade and the basil will keep some of the tomato plagues at bay.

Hi Jessie, we had our first frost up here in southern Scotland 4 days ago. I got everything in! My cobra beans were amazing this year, I must have picked pounds and the freezer is full. Chard is always on the go here too. My cabbages were great and so were the Runner beans. Beetroot is always a failure for me along with Radishes. I dont know why. Your plot looks set to go for Winter and I hope it's not going to be a repeat of last year. We had -14 deg here for about a week. My bones can't take it lol. So you know what they say....Winter drawers on!! Cheers Jessie and Mum!!
