My trusty old Beretta 92FS Police Special from the early 1990s which I intended to brag on as being a very robust design… apparently has been broken. The firing pin developed a stress fracture at the cutout for the firing pin block where there is a 90° corner. (This might indicate rounded firing pin blocks with semi-circular or oval relief cuts in the firing pin/striker like Glock and other pistols have might be a superior design for longevity.)
The pistol has been working so I don’t know when this fracture occurred but the parts show evidence of having moved a lot while in the broken condition. The fractured areas have wear.
So, while it did break it actually continued to fire and function without me knowing it.
I’ll have a replacement in it soon and will do the comparison video with the Walther P38 design, but for now just enjoy the irony of this little bit of misfortune.
