First off - your videos are amazing and I thank you so much. Can’t tell you how much I’ve learned just from watching your tutorials and Orioles sim. I’m in a bind myself and wanted to get your take - I’m on an As sim and got semien in the last year of his deal. He’s putting up a 7 WAR season which is great. My team in general is wild card contender / potentially competing with angels for Division. Problem I have is I know I can’t afford to have semien at age 30 on a massive deal that he wants. (I also need to pay Chapman and Olson more each year because of arb - so they’re only getting more expensive). I’ve got the As best prospect nick allen who can take semiens spot. Big bat drop off though and also losing a leader in the club house. Everything tells me to trade him and get some value but I’m considering rolling the dice to try and win it all. Question is: how do you personally evaluate these decisions? When to roll the dice and go for it all and when to say I need to get some value long term?
Hey Anjan, tanks for the comment, I'm glad the videos have been helpful. From what I know about your situation with Semien, I'd keep him and then offer him a qualifying offer at the end of the season. It sounds like you're contending currently and I'd prioritize that over getting prospects back for Semien.
just a quick question. Is there a setting to show the low personality rates. for example at 1:20 at personality, it shows what isnt great about his personality. And i dont have that
Personality stuff should show up by default. There's not a setting for it that I know of (but I'll double check later). Not all players have the "high" and "low" personality traits. It's only listed for players who are especially high or low in certain traits. If they are "normal" in all traits, it will just have a sentence about them under personality.
If you need to trade a player to cut some payroll, I'd start by deciding which player makes the most sense to trade. Two things I'd look at first are 1) which player can you easiest replace with internal options on your team and in the minor leagues and 2) is anyone on your team overpaid?
Obviously varies wildly by player & position but do you have a general ballpark estimate for how much each WAR is worth on the open market? It's difficult to judge if a guy is asking for a reasonable amount, a discount, or way too much
Hey Noah, tough to give an absolute rule on this because so many factors come into what I'll offer a player and who I make offers to, but the general rule of thumb in MLB is a win is worth $8-10m on the open market. The top end of the market is generally underpaid relative to this (a 6-win player isn't gonna get $60m) but it's a decent rule of thumb to reality check a player's ask.
I'm having issues with having enough money for free agents at the proper time. My owner always increases my budget too late to get the top F.A.'s. Any suggestions for better financial management at beginning of free agent process ? Thanks for the videos. Very helpful.
Yeah, that can be annoying when your owner increases the budget close to the start of the season, after you’ve already missed your chance at spending that money most effectively. I’d say, basically, don’t plan on those increases, treat them like a bonus. For planning purposes, assume those additional budget increases won’t come.
