The 1st Battalion of The Green Howards were stationed at Ebrington Barracks in the Waterside area of Londonderry Northern Ireland from January 1987 until March 1989.
Soldiers and 8 Infantry Brigade personnel also spent time in various patrol bases in Londonderry which have now been relegated to history. Fort George has been levelled, Masonic and Rosemount Patrol Bases have been dismantled and the lands handed back to the City. Clooney Base has gone and will soon be redeveloped as the new sites for Ebrington Primary School and Foyle and Londonderry College.
Ebrington Barracks closed in 2003 and lay dormant until November 2007 when the Bulldozers moved in to prepare the site for Re - Development.
On 23rd April 2008, Former Green Howard Dave Malcolm who is now a community leader in Londonderry along with others went back to Ebrington Barracks and went on a tour of the old site hosted by the iLEX Urban Regeneration Company to hear about the plans for the former Barracks and to see the work already carried out.
Dave took various pictures of the site during the tour and saw first hand what was left of the former Ebrington Barracks site and what would remain once the site is re - developed.

A Green Howard for thirteen years and i never get sick of listening to this great music, Out of six tours derry was one place i never got to see, Ireland made some good boys into good men, also some good men into little boys,Good times would love to go back in time, once a Howard always a Howard.

Superb video. I was REME 8 Bde 82 to 84. Lived on Nelson Drive as a pad. Sad to see Ebrington like this, like seeing your past vanish. Remember the poor souls who lost their lives at the Droppin Well in 82. And the poor WRAC who who was badly hurt that night. Bless you Tweaky

Thanks for posting this video,it brings back so many memories.I was a REME armourer with the Green Howards in 1987.I remember Silver,he was a really good bloke.Such a shame the place has been demolished and I often wonder what the lads I worked with are doing now,all scattered to the four winds.

Ian Metcalf was a great guy, RIP Ian. Ebrington was an aweful place, wasn't sorry to leave.

I served with 8 Inf Brigade from 1987 til 1991, sad that my home for all them years has been demolished .............. My respect to all that didn't come home.

I was in Ebrington from 1988-90 on Brigaders Rover Group, only there 3 months when Jock Duncan was killed, still can`t beleive it hardly even got a mention in the press. Went over the city vertually every day saw the place for what it was. A lot of laughs off duty in a very restricted environment but my memories at the end of the day were how slack the running of the place was. Never been back but trying very hard to again not an easy place to get to.

@lango2502 Thanks for your comments m8, it is sad that many of the buildings are now gone with only Benbow and Raleigh block remaining at the top of the Barracks, but the majority of the buildings around the main parade square remain to this day.

most of its still there lads I live in Londonderry and my dad was a green Howard sadly he was medically discharged in 1992 and then took his life in 1993 robert Wayne bowers. if any of ye new him

I wasn't Green Howards but was stationed here 1992-1995. I always planned to get back and see the old place some day, alas i never got around to doing it so thanx for at least giving me one last look and bringing back some memories.

i note your memorys of this place my memorys is of a 14 yr old 15 yr old going to school being stoped at british army checkpoints insulted threatend and spat on a relative who was a nun crossing the criagavin bridge had a big green spit on her back curtusy of a scottish solider so not all was so rosey there i admit the scottish regiments were above the most violent bigots when they were here
