Massive protests in the late 1980s and '90s led to the protection of the ancient forests of Opal Creek in Oregon's Central Cascades. The 2020 Beachie Creek Fire burned through Opal Creek before spreading to several communities in the nearby Santiam Canyon.
Currently, the extent and severity of fire damage to the Opal Creek drainage is unknown. "Oregon Field Guide" produced this feature in 1998 when it was a newly-designated wilderness area.

The fire burned through it, didn't burn it down. These forests need fire and Ancient forests are more resilient to fire than early and mid succession forests.

@@freehongkong2344it hadn’t been burned for too long, and then it burned to hot when it did and killed most of the trees in the burned area of the pass

What is that species of bird calling at the first seconds of the video?

@@rachelwebber3605 Thank you so much for that! I've been searching for that for years. It sounds like a fantasy sci-fi creature. So spell binding and I only ever hear them in old growth forest. Never anywhere that has young forest.

@@treck87 They're one of my favorite birds to hear! I've heard them in second growth forests in the early morning or late evenings (usually when I'm doing a survey). They're fairly common birds, but they sound so magical when they're the only ones singing when the sun sets!

@@rachelwebber3605 I agree. They're a masterpiece of nature when that haunting call echoes through the tree canopy. It makes the mind wander to fantasy of gnomes and fairies taking care of the flora and fauna.

@@rachelwebber3605 I, too, am glad to have learned the name of the bird! I heard it 30 years ago echoing in some remote woods near Tacoma and I never forgot it! Thanks!

Incorrect. The miners did quite well mining there. In fact I suction dredge that area every year.

The Beachie Creek fire started about 2 miles south of Jawbone Flats and is 48% contained as of September 23. Jawbone Flats is well within the burn scar and fate of the historical sites and old growth ecosystem is currently unknown, but it is unlikely that all the old growth trees have been killed. We will know more in the coming months after the fire has died.

Well they are most likely "salvage " logging this entire area now including the old growth. We all know the old trees rarely burn up but I guarantee they will cut them down anyways
