Opel Omega 2.4i barn find. Parked since '03, it's been recovered but can we make it start and drive?

We were invited by David Lough of M9 Recovery to have a look at this odd left hand drive Opel Omega A GLS 2.4i estate on UK reg plates he had picked up. It had been parked up in a barn (yes an actual barn) since 2003 and had not been run since then.
The car has a 2.4i CIH engine which was never offered in the British Vauxhall Carlton. We have a go at getting it running.
Cheers to DTH Performance Workshop. Tillicoultry, 07736 008539 for originally finding the car.
David runs M9 Recovery so if you need any car shifting services in the central belt you can get him on 07928 037184
And thanks to Alec's Autos in Stirling for letting David keep the car there so we could get over and do some work on it. Alec is on 07981 851415 if you need some car repairs in the area.

It has been ages since I last saw one those old Omega's on the road, and it has been even longer for an estate version. It really deserves to be restored to former glory. As I think it is even more rare than a Manta , ...

Hi ! GLS is the ... well ... "not so fancy" generic version of the Omega. The 2.4 is derived from the old CIH-2.0 of the Opel Record D and E and has a casted block and head. Nearly indestructible. No wonders they used it for the offroad Frontera. This Omega may need a good wash, a little bit of interieur work, new filters, oil, some rust repair and some minor paintwork - and with a little over 200.000 kilometers it is viable for another 200K. The caravan is a good workhorse for small businesses. Trailer hooks are still available and it could do good for numerous years. :-)

That engine looks a lot like a larger version of the mk 1 Cavalier 2.0 engine. Worked as a mechanic at a Vauxhall Dealer in the late eighties. Loved the mk1 Cavalier. I owned a Firenza HP droop snoot for a few years. HWA 99N. Great videos, have spent the last couple of days going through them.

Great to see it running again. I was tuning a car at a remote farm, there was a Vauxhall Victor FE sitting in the corner. I asked him about the Victor, he said that his wife found it too big as she had just passed her test. He asked if I wanted it, I said, how much, he said take it away and it's yours! I was hoping this old Opel would come back to life, and it did. I had a 1975 Ascona A (the last year they were sold here in the USA). That one had Bosch L-Jetronic injection, and other than the design of the valve cover & the shape of the intake manifold and air cleaner housing, I would have felt right at home under the hood of this car. It was an easy car to work on, for sure. One time, when I needed a starter, I bought a used one from a wrecking yard and swapped it in during my lunch period during the work day. It was a good solid car for almost 200K miles, when I sold it, just because it was too difficult to find spare parts, which is a problem for a daily driver car. For some reason, I had to replace the water pump 2 times, and the fuel injectors 2 times.
@ThePeca1988
@ThePeca1988 3 года назад
My father had an '89, it was a daily untill about 2018, but then regulations changed, and because of that it was becoming very expensive to have it, so he sold it. Nothing was 100% good on that car anymore, but it was still doing 6-700km trips without any problems till the last day of ownership. Awesome cars, their only problem is their age, but if they are looked after, they go till the end of time. As far as the heater core goes, opel made a design flaw there, there is no valve before the inner radiator, and after 30 years its flow capacity is extremely reduced. It gets clogged up easily, because its always circulating water. So in winter they are not the best heating cars unless you fix it

They mostly run these with twin webers or throttle body's on the continent, with some head work and a different camshaft they put out some decent power. There pretty sought after here on the continent. They even run them with shortened 24V heads so you get a 2.4 16V. Nice video, would be nice to keep it in the omega, because most of them have already ended up in manta's, ascona's and kadetts

You're not wrong about that engine having more power in it than they rolled out of the factory with in that application. That bottom end is basically what the Manta 400 used and pretty much that whole engine is what the Manta i240 used. I think by that time there may have been a few top end improvements over the old Manta-spec solid rocker engine but that is probably only an advantage... I'll bet that's got a lot more torque in it than the 2.0 8 valve that was the standard petrol lump in the UK which always felt a little weak in the Carlton, especially the estate... GLS was the basic trim for the Omega in Germany, equivalent to the L on the Carlton so, on an early model like that, about all you'd have got was central locking as standard...

The 2.4 CIH is quite sought after here in Germany. They weren't all that common to be honest - just the Omega and Frontera had them IIRC. They are reputed to be good for around 275bhp, but I can't confirm that!

They used to do a 16 valve head for them it was a shortened 24 valve head

Not sure he even checked the oil.. imagine running it on that oil thsts sat in that sump since 2003 :/ ot deserved fresh oil and filters and fuel.. bet that comes up nice with a good wash and valet. It reminds me of a cavalier mk3 i used to own though.. it just handled whatever was thrown its way and soldiered on.. its a Vauxhall thing:)

Well, I have the same engine in my car, "tweaked" by Sevdalis SuperFlow (Greek engine builder) and we produced 240 BHP @7.154 rpm on the dyno with 260 Nm of torque (yes, good old N/A). Just because you mentioned at some point that "We checked and it doesn't look like there is but someone in Germany must tweak these". Send me a message if you want more info on how to tweak this engine. :)

I have one of these engines too, in a Manta Exclusive Coupe. Wow.....240 BHP!!! That's a bit of an increase from 125 BHP stock :) . I'm struggling to find anyone in the UK these days who knows how to tune them, or at least chip them anyway. Would be interested to know more.......

We've had someone get in contact with an Ascona in Europe with loads of power from one of these so I'll put together a bit on that soon.

In Australia the Holden Commodore VN series is similar to this.

They were based on the Opel, but made wider plus fitted with GM Buick V6’s and Holden iron lion 5.0V8’s. The interiors were a Holden design, and awful compared to the Opel/Vauxhall in my opinion.
