Hi GSM77. Thanks for the comment. Yes over filling can be as harmful as under filling. Astras like oil so it's a good idea to check regularly. As a guide, check your oil level at least once a week. Try and not let it go below half on the dip stick marks.

Driveway Dudes Well noted. I won't tell you how much smoke was coming out the exhaust on the dual carriageway but I couldn't see the cars behind me! Very embarrasing and dangerous. Quick Q, I have a 2004 Astra 1.4. Oil change done and around 3.5 litres of new oil put in. Oil on dipstick is at the top end but still the engine sounds a bit tappety...almost like a diesel. Should I add more oil?
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 7 лет назад
Be careful not to over fill. If the oil is reading full on the dip stick then no more is necessary until you've run the engine till hot, switch off, wait 10-15 minutes then dip again. Wipe dipstick on first dip then dip a second time. If it's still reading full then job done. If it's reading over half then you can add about a 1/2 litre.
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 7 лет назад
Only add a 1/2 litre if it's closer to half up the marks on the dipstick. If it's nearly full then don't. Just a very small amount at a time. It takes time for the oil to go down inside the engine.

Hi GSM77. Thanks for waiting while I checked with our guest presenter Jonathan regarding your "diesel" sounding engine noise issue. He said he had exactly the same issue when he bought his Astra. It didn't effect the running too much (a bit thirstier than normal), however it did cause the engine light to come on every now and then. His Astra didn't have any service history with it so when he was able to he had the full timing chain and ancillaries (tensioners & pulleys) professionally changed and a follow-up oil & oil filter change with GM Long Life Synthetic oil. This completely resolved the engine noise, engine light appearing and fuel economy issues. I'm not saying this is the issue your experiencing or that this is the resolution but it's the only example that I know of that another Astra 1.4 is having the "diesel" sounding engine noise. Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on :) Driveway Dudes - Will

Hi, I have astra h 1.7 (74kW) and needs oil change. The car just did 91k miles and the last change was in 84k less than a year ago with 5w30 . My question is what kind of oil should I choose for the change now and can I change it Infront of my house ( on the roa bcz I dont have a drive ) thank you !
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 5 лет назад
The 1.7(74KW) is a CDTi. The recommended engine oil for this engine is ACEA C3 5W30 or ACEA C3 5W40. Please check with your local laws and rules on carrying out car repairs or maintenance on a public road.

For some unknown reason there are two types of oil filters made by Mann and other brands for the 1.4 Astra H 1. Mann oil Filter HU712/8x is 87mm height 2. Mann Oil Filter HU6122X is 103mm height Ideally you would need to take out your old filter and measure it. Guest presenter Jonathan was lucky he ordered the correct one first time. 10w 40 mate I bet the car is older, more wear and tear on engine so use thicker oil ull get longer lasting engine, I personally think you would only put 5w 30 if it was few years old car or new opel astra, what year the car

Hi I went for a drive yesterday and when I parked up I thought to check my oil level as I haven't done so before. When I took the dipstick out I noticed white smoke coming from the dipstick tube, is this normal? I've had this car 2 months and I got it second hand. I don't know a lot about engines or cars as this is my first car. It's a 1.4 Astra H
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 6 лет назад
Hi George, Not unusual to get a small big of moisture build up in the engine but it burns off when the engine is running. Best to check the following: 1.Visually check you oil and coolant levels first, dipstick and coolant levels should be between Min and Max. 2.Remove and check the inside of the oil filler cap, what colour is the residue, black or creamy sludge? Black is good. 3.Remove the coolant expansion tank cap, look in and does the coolant appear clear or muddy? Mainly clear is good. Do not do this when the engine is running or when it is hot. Wait for at least 10 or more minutes after the engine has been switched off as you may get inaccurate readings.

@georgeh4981 6 лет назад
Driveway Dudes Thanks for the reply. I checked my oil level, it is just above the min mark so I'm going to get that topped up today. I removed the oil filler cap and the oil was black but on the rim there was a bit of brown sludge. The coolant levels are normal and it is normal colour. I don't drive long journeys, only to and from work about 25 minutes each way
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 6 лет назад
When topping up do it slowly and a small amount at a time then let it stand. It may take several minutes for it to register on the dipstick. It does not need to be Max, 1/2 - 3/4 is good. Wipe the sludge off and check again in a few days to a week. If when checking again you find coffee cream coloured sludge then you may have to investigate further though it could be a minor thing like moisture or condensation.

@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes Год назад
Hi Kian. In lieu of user manuals, we use online lubricant advisor tools which can be found online by googling them. We stick to using ones made for the UK/Irish market as fuel/temperature conditions can vary from region to region which may effect the recommended oil.

how do you know youve tightened the filter cap back up 25 newtons with just a pair of grips? I have the correct 27 socket, how do i gauge the tightness?
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 6 лет назад
Hi Hambag2009. In this scenario guest presenter Jonathan used his previous vehicle servicing experience to gauge how tight the oil filter housing cap was with the grips. After running the car and driving it, there were no leaks. I can completely understand and appreciate your question and I would always advise to use a torque wrench for accurate results, but without the right tools available at the time, you do what you can. Jonathan did later invest in a torque wrench and a set of oil filter housing cap removal sockets for future use, and found that his oil filter housing cap was more or less at the correct tightness. Driveway Dudes - Will

ok thanks. ive always been told tighten, but not 'too' tight, and just check that its fitted squarely. check after first test drive for any leaks, if not, jobs a good 'un!

10NM? that sounds like too little torque, doesn't it?
@DrivewayDudes
@DrivewayDudes 6 лет назад
It doesn't seem like a lot but what would you be comparing it too? It's the torque decided by Opel/Vauxhall/GM and it's proven to work for this particular task. Other brands/models have different torques and it's always best to follow manufacturers recommendations to avoid possible issues occurring.

I’m never paying for an oil change again. They’ve overfilled it by loadss, it goes about 3 inches above the maximum line. I really don’t know how they fucked it up that bad. But there isn’t any smoke or anything coming out the car, so I don’t think that it’s done anything too bad just yet. So I’m going to have to drain my oil a little bit at a time until it’s on the right level. Absolute piss take
