Growing up in New Zealand you'd just crack it open tip the sea water out and eat it😂them old school elders would just crack it open and drink everything 😭
As someone who doesn't eat anything from the ocean, I find it so cool and fascinating how many things people can eat from them and all the different ways to. Thanks for sharing.
In my province in the Philippines i used to eat that alot and i mean alot. We live sea side and everyday at 5 am we harvest them. Trust me it taste so so so good in a spicy vinegar 😋😍 its very addictive since the sea urchin are just small in my area just clean them and eat with a good spicy/sour sauce them you're good.
@IfYouSeeSomeoneDrowningLol urchins don't have a "brain". A brain is also not indicative of something being alive. Urchins are invertebrates, their entirely composed of one big "eye", they have a pretty complex nervous system that acts as the "brain", and even have the ability to see, but very poorly. So their nervous system acts as the brain and the eyes to keep them living. Because they lack a brain, this means they feel absolutely zero emotions, but that doesn't mean it's not living. It moves on its own, it feeds itself, like with other invertebrates we suspect they can feel pain because they have a multitude of pain receptors, and in order to eat uni you have to eat them fresh right out the seafood shop because the moment they loose oxygenated water they die and start to turn bad (immediately). So yeah, I can't point out a brain, but they're alive 🤷🏼♀️
@@aleeeeeeexoxo how do you know? Did you talk to one ? Made an interview? They react to touch dont they? If you step on one they release venom as a reaction to the pressure. Sounds to me like they are alive and try to protect themselves but hey if “they have no nerve no brain” part makes it sound not alive to you …
In the Philippines while we enjoy the beach, we pick it off the corals which are less than 7feet below surface using a knife to stab it. Then shake it with a bucket to break off the spikes. Then break open the opening, clean it up with saltwater, put vinegar in it and eat it directly. Call me poor or unsanitary, but you could never say I missed out on one of the most expensive foods, when we Filipinos have it for free on a random beach day
Good thing you didn't grow up eating this. This is actually the people's cultures. You can say the same thing about the stuff we eat in America. Making some cultures eating pigs is like frowned upon.
I always hear this, like oysters taste like sea water. Why is that appetizing? If I swallow sea water I’m like choking to death. That’s so much salt! I just don’t understand when people say yum, it taste like seawater! 🤢 I would love to know why seawater is delicious lol
How do the spikes not puncture you when holding them? How does that work? It seems it’s easy to have it get in your skin when slightly touching it underwater. Just wondering…
When you poke a sea urchin the spines will react to your touch, also when they die the spines are really easy to move around or will even just fall out
@@TheAtlasJoker well it’s a valid question all the ones I’ve seen don’t move much as is and it’s not like she shows us the difference between a live one
@@Falmarie oh no it is a valid question, I wasn’t trying to be rude sorry That’s why I said usually cuz some urchins won’t move at all and others will continue to have a postmortem response for a couple hours
@@TheAtlasJoker Thank you for your answer. I was wondering the same thing. So many of us have never seen anything like this and are afraid to ask questions and get ridiculed. Thank you for being kind.
i tried this for the first time at a sushi restaurant and it was so bitter i actually couldnt swallow and it killed my appetite 😭 i wanna like it so bad
So I went to a very expensive fancy Japanese rests and had their 7 course tasting menu. I discovered uni is not for me. I’m proud I tried something new though.
its sweeter if you leave the uni in the clean river for three days although it dose have a funky smell to it its actually sweeter than sweet thats my experience from that, true story. Mean my Native Aotearoa nz.
I want to eat it!!! Whats the exact name of that sea urchin? Because theres different types of edible sea urchin out there and i want to eat that one in the video in the future
I would have got the meanest growling if I ever washed sea urchins, my Aunties and uncles would say it’s a waste cause I’d be taking away from the original taste. Fast way to open sea urchins is by stabbing it with some closed tongs into the middle then spreading the tongs open and watching the urchin split open perfectly you won’t even need a se scissors to cut in to it
Yeah where im from we eat sea urchin together with the 'digested kelp' dark part. I imagine if u wash it the flavor would be lost cause in the first place theres not much taste to it...
They start deteriorating minutes after they die, they literally entierly fall apart within hours, if its been dead for a few hours you'll have nothing left to eat
Do you guys watch the videos with no sound or what? The first thing she said was this one died in transit and the video is just for demonstrative purposes.
It's absolutely disgusting. It's one of the few things I cannot eat. That and blood sausage. Oh and liver. They taste like slimy sea water. Disgusting.
