This company is changing the way we see prostheses. Open Bionics is a UK-based start-up tech company. Its mission is to create affordable 3D printed prostheses. They are about 30 times cheaper than other prostheses on the market.
They operate using sensors attached to the skin to detect muscle movements. The muscle movements control the hand and open and close fingers.
Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more.

This sort of thing brings tears to my eyes. There is a special place in heaven for people who do this kind of work.

Love 3D printers. Not only are they able to make prosthetics but soon fully automatic weapons and explosives. Technology gives and takes away.
@panpiper
@panpiper 6 лет назад
@krosny Easily affordable 3D printers will NOT be making "fully automatic weapons" any time soon, and they will likely 'never' be able to make explosives. 3D printers additively apply 'existing' materials to a structure. Explosives require the mixing of different chemicals to create new compounds, a completely different process than 3D printers. One can create explosives on their own with (dangerous) garage chemistry, and we've been able to do that for a very long time, but we won't be seeing any major improvements in the common man's ability to do it due to these new advances. Fully automatic weapons on the other hand 'could' be made in theory by MUCH more advanced 3D printers, but for several decades yet, such printers will be WAY beyond the level of affordability for the average Joe. They would require printing using very high quality steel to extreme exacting measure. Current affordable printers print using a low quality plastic, they are pretty close to toys for most applications.
@Chuck_Hooks

Peter Cohen "In recent months, we've seen metal laser sintering technology produce 3D-printed guns that can fire thousands of rounds and are practically indistinguishable from manufactured guns. We've seen durable rifles that are entirely 3D-printed. Heck, we've even seen custom bullets that are specifically designed to work with 3D-printed guns. The inventor hopes to use them to produce semiautomatic and even fully automatic 3D-printed guns." --Gizmodo 01/06/15 Notice this article was written in 2015. Doesn't sound like it will take decades. As to explosives, Muslims have used simple pressure cooker, pipe and nail bombs to commit murder all over the world. And that is without the aid of 3D printers. There is no limit to what 3D printers will be able to do explosive-wise sooner rather than later.

Honestly it warmed my heart till "royalty free" came up and thats when the tears came lol. ANY kid would kill for an Iron Man hand/arm as more of a "Power" behind the loss. To see theyre not going "OK, we like the idea.....for $1,000. unit." REALLY took me. Bravo OB, bravo Disney

It takes a lot of time, money, and work to make a 3D printed gun. You need a certain kind of 3D printer of which prints metal, but it’s extremely expensive and it’s slow. It’s faster to just cast a firearm and assemble it than to 3D print it. 3D printing is slow, and I know it because I myself own a 3D printer.

Every single company needs profit. Profit is the reason that sparks innovation. She's trying to sell it to the masses by making it affordable not non-profitable.

Matthew Van Loon He didn't say they wouldnt get any profit, he just said they cut the product price to help the customer
@mattvalon4674
@mattvalon4674 6 лет назад
TheTeddyChannel They never cut price, they're using lower tier materials to make existing technology more accessible to the poor and middle class. You cannot expect high end (new) technology to be immediately affordable for the mass market. Also, he was talking about "infinite profit". probably not knowing how businesses work. You cannot start a business and ask for a high price, because nobody will (be able to) buy your products, thus you end up being bankrupt.

The funny thing is, artificial limbs will eventually be more powerful and useful than biological limbs. People will be paying for augmentation. There would also be attachments for different scenarios. Want to rock climb? Here's climbing pick hands. Want to perform a surgery with steady hands? That would also probably be a thing.
@flitsies
@flitsies 6 лет назад
Won't be long before it will be legs, no reason why this type of tech couldn't be used to make an enhancement suit using 3d printed parts. Exo suit. Then the money made from people just wanting these things willing to pay, that money could go into the NHS to help pay towards to the cost for those who need them. The more people have them the more advances are made.
@ricardosv9702
@ricardosv9702 6 лет назад
EdgeBlade KnifeSword That's so true, I hope it to be prohibited, and companies to be conscious about it, and just leave it as it is, a replacement for biological limbs for people that need it, no mods, no gadgets, etc. Instead of that, invest the money to improve it and make it more real.

Michael Priest not really : amputees are a minority. As for me, I've been interested in cybernetic limbs for years and it's the first I'm hearing of it. And I'm already a Disney fanboy. I think the market is simply too small and someone at Disney felt it was good for their karma.
@ecsdwe129
@ecsdwe129 6 лет назад
Jean Roch No it's definitely a marketing campaign. It doesn't matter what the size of the amputee market is, other people who don't have missing limbs who see that Disney is doing this will still feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and Disney still benefits from that. But just because Disney's primary motivation is advertising doesn't mean that the people who greenlit this idea don't want to help amputees - in fact, I am sure that they are genuinely happy to help, because why wouldn't they be. The two motivations are not mutually exclusive.

People are so gullible. Of course, this is all Disney marketing. The people creating these prosthetics did great, Disney is simply capitalizing on it. This isn't the company of Walt Disney anymore, it is a ruthless multi-billion dollar corporation. If you don't know how ruthless of a company they are, they you don't know the Disney Corporation.
@mangalores-x_x
@mangalores-x_x 5 лет назад
@@stickman1742 Have your read about Walt Disney? The idea that Disney ever something different than a corporation is the mind boggling thing here. Walt Disney could be a right nasty bastard. People however should stop expecting other people to be Buddha before admitting something they did was nice. So what, if they did it for PR? Otherwise they would have the legal right to prevent Disney copyrighted brands to be used here.

Scanning and 3D printing bionic arms with a focus on better quality at a lower cost for children. Only they focused on making the bionic match the skin tone of the user. You can probably buy one without needing a prosthetic. Just say it's for robotics experiments if they ask.

This is awesome glad somebody is doing this, I had an idea like this years ago when I saw terminator, way before 3D printing. Really simple idea of letting people have designer prosthesis because who wants a clunky arm/leg/whatever, when they could have terminator skeleton arm or streamlined contemporary look. Wanted people to have something that was wholly theirs, that they could design themselves to an extent and I'd build it for them. Wasn't practical back then but maybe now there's hope for it with new advances.

This is great! A kid missing his hand would (sadly) normally be bullied, but a kid with an Iron Man arm would be the coolest kid in school! This is a great idea all around.

I absolutely LOVE the arrangement with Disney and the cool science fiction limbs. It allows people with prosthetics to feel proud and get good attention about their limb. So awesome.
