In this segment of Open Court, the NBA legends debate who the best trash talker of their generation was and tell some hilarious stories in the process.
Larry Bird is notorious for being extremely cocky and backing it up every single time. He would tell his defender what he was going to do and do it anyway.
LOL GP was like that and Shaq nailed him. I can't remember the game but GP was with the Sonics and he threw Kemp an alley oop and after Kemp dunked the ball GP said they can't stop you boy had me cracking up.
4:29 DAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN Smitty looks outraged by Reggie cutting him off like that. XD XD I bet he scratched the crap out of his car when they finished the episode.
I read a story that Michael once talked shit to muggsy bogues. Bogues is the shortest player ever I'm pretty sure and once they were facing the bulls in the playoffs and he had the ball and jordan backed off and said "shoot it you fucking midget" and bogues airballed. Bogues later said that that play ruined his career and his shot never recovered.
To this day, I don't know how Gary Payton did it: to have enough stamina to trash talk the ENTIRE game AND shut other players down for 40+ minutes...dude was beast.

+Italian Supreme I know exactly what you're talking about. It was our last game against the Grizzlies and Conley Jr. took about 5 steps to get a layup. Iggy started dancing and doing the travel hand motion and Kerr was pissed. Even Conley said he traveled. The NBA officiating is getting ridiculous.
isnt that a good thing though that we don't have all that garbage in the nba anymore im proud of them...better for kids to watch...like who wants to see people fight get hurt that could ruin the players relationships in the future and its not basketball...you want fights go watch streetball thugs...like i want to see competing without showing people up bragging and without fights....trash talk leads to fights....i think society needs to grow up if we miss those idiotic things...ironically its the older generation who misses those child like actions...morons...the next generation is so much better than us and im glad we are raising them to be less angry ...we are hypocrites and wrong to cheer for trash talk...knock it off....im glad the nba has a dress code im glad they throw people out much faster now and im glad they have the whole if you get off the bench durring a playoff game during a fight your suspended rule....the newer generation players....arent on drugs anymore...or as harsh on young players either anymore so their isnt as much animosity in their systems as the 80's
I was born in the 90's so I fought trash talkers because they wouldn't shut up Im just saying if you are going to talk be prepared to fight you are just giving some one a reason to knock you out because niggas are too dumb to just shut up and play the game.
He's really humble but obviously, the Bulls players and coaches had a ton of confidence in him. If you look over at the old videos, during crunch time, Kerr was always in there. He stretched defenses because if you left him open, he would just murder you.
Way too humble. Believe it or not hes #1 all time in 3 pt % shooting. 1. Steve Kerr .4540 2. Steph Curry .4424 and the late Drazen Petrovic in 4th with .4374
+Joseph Perey There's another episode of "Open Court" where Isiah Thomas suggests that Steve Smith, to this day, really doesn't care for Reggie Miller. Steve mostly agreed; the rivalry was just that intense.
Larry is my favorite trash talker. The stories are too good and on top of that, it's just hilarious to imagine all the black players reactions when they realized a white dude was talking noise and tuning them up lol
I find it ironic that the NBA posted this. I mean, aren't they doing everything in their power to regulate emotion OUT of the game? Don't they just want obidient robots who repeat pre-approved statements to the media? o.O
I think Payton was the craziest, non-stop trash talker, but Larry Bird might have been the best. Bird was notorious for telling opposing defenders what he was going to do (on the upcoming offensive play), and most times the defender still couldn't stop him. That's both great AND ultimate confidence.
Mike S Michael Jordan did that all the time. He'd tell u how many points he was gonna score etc. Jordan trumps bird by quite a distant in the trash talking department. Just my opinion
Yup, Jordan had a number in his head for every player he faced. He saw them by how many points he averaged against them like "Doc Rivers= 40, Drexler= 35, John Starks= 30, Anthony Peeler= 50...."
Yeah, I know this was 6 years ago but GP takes the cake. Yeah Bird and Jordan would probably play more of a mental battle but GP non-stop barking would test anyone and get a reaction to which he thrived off. Probably the most annoying (in the best way) at trash talking. You could really make an argument for any of them listed in the video.
I absolutely loved Steve Kerr when I was watching the Bulls in the 90s and think he really is one of the greatest role players I have ever seen in the NBA. He should give himself more credit. Great player, great guy.
Goshdamn I miss these guys on the court. 80’s and 90’s ball was just different. And it’s because of these guys and many others that made the game special. Glad I was born at the right time to witness it.
Kerr is one of the greatest spot up shooters and stays humble...that sh** reflects on his coaching, that willingness to an unselfish team with a LOT of allstars and that extra pass that makes the Warriors a great team as a whole. I respect that guy a WHOLE lot. Mad respect Steve ✊
Kerr also holds the distinction of being the last player to pull off a QUAD-PEAT. 3 with Chicago, then one with the Spurs. Granted he was a good role-player with those teams....
I can't believe these were filmed 10 years ago. I feel like I was watching these two or three years ago. The TNT All-NBA Draft is something I still watch every 3 months or so.
I wish there were more segments like this, MJ counting back from 40 is priceless, wish I heard more stories and more of what players said I think its a fascinating insight into the game and the mentality of the players.
One of the BEST and most MAGICALLY things about sports are these moments....sitting around talking with old teammates and opponents about times that seemed more important than life itself then, and today are the silliest things you can remember. It's Amazing!! lol.
When Steve Smith said that Michael Jordan was counting backwards, that’s how you know that he was the best. He was actually letting you know how many points he was scoring.
Kg pierce bron draymond arrest harden Howard Vince carter Ray Allen Dwayne wade Anthony Davis Westbrook durant deandre Jordan Blake griffin melo Lillard Joel embid Brandon Jennings John wall Demarcus cousins rondo igudola lance Stephenson .... I think those guys have good personalities to bring something to the table and you can handpick some for a good show. Especially debased Jordan Dwight Howard and Demarcus cousins, they have big personalities
I love how humble Steve Kerr is. He can full on admit to himself and basically anyone who will listen that he was not a great player which is true. Good for sure but never great. The world could use a little more humbleness like that.
I hate the new NBA fans and NBA in general. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the game but it's just so friendly and soft on the court. Fans will go out their way to create an image and call you all types of names and hate you just for some competitive trash talk... I miss the old days.
+Armani Smith there is always altercation and fights because someone chose to raise their fist on somebody and you got hot headed and tight in their chest with their words. You can still talk trash and do things in order to shut em up without laying a hand on them.
love Open Court. The light heartedness and real insight to the game is great. Can't help but wonder what stories players from todays league will have for us in the future
One of my favorite Shaq trash talk is we got traded to the heat and went to L.A. and was trash talking the crowd " your new center sucks" .....such a grudge holder and big kid at heart
I sort of think players don't talk trash anymore, simply because of the NBA's public image. It's a good one despite the Detroit fiasco, but it really intensifies the game. I miss the aggressive play of the NBA.
Gotta love that the players didn't take their trash talking seriously back then. Nowadays, someone says something on the court or posts a tweet and it gets overblown in seconds.
