grown up in the '80s I was a die-hard Laker fan and out of everyone on the Boston Celtics I disliked Kevin McHale the most. cuz he just looked like Frankenstein and he never really talked I was absolutely gobsmacked shocked 15 years later when he's retired and on TV I find out this guy has a great personality. for 12 13 years I literally had no idea could have never guessed it.

If that had happened the Celtics might have had a 2-1 record against the Lakers in the finals and not the other way around.
@mikepetitti
@mikepetitti 3 года назад
Back then, the "code" was "if you can walk, you play." The team came first. In retrospect, Boston could have rested McHale, but stress fractures in feet take a very long time to heal so it may not have helped. Second, while I don't think Boston needed the home court towin the East in 1986/87, it is unlikely that KC Jones would have rested his players such as Parish, Bird, Ainge and DJ because back then, you played every game to win. Load management and being fresh for the playoffs was a foreign concept.
@jingqi9106

@@mikepetitti Nowadays the philosophy is to load manage players before they're even hurt. If there was instant replay back then the Celtics would probably have won game 4. That was an extremely questionable call against McHale on Kareem's missed free throw. The fact that the Celtics were absolutely debilitated with injuries and not much of a bench, yet could have easily gone back to L.A. up 3 - 2 is scary. People forget this was the same team inly one year removed from the legendary 86 championship team that was one of the greatest in NBA history. It was all the injuries that crippled them as well as the death of Len Bias in the 87 season. A Celtic team at full strength would have been able to get at least one game in L.A. just like they did in '84 and '85. We would be talking about a totally different story today.

@markythelarky6948
@markythelarky6948 Год назад
@@blachloch1 Actually, the 80s were far rougher, refs were far less likely to call fouls. Shaq would've been physically dominant, but he also would have been beat up more and less effective. Shaq always praises Olajuwan for schooling him with all those moves. Well, in the 80s Olajuwan was there alongside Sampson, McHale was there with Parish, there were guys like Mahorn and Rodman who would have punched and elbowed Shaq all night long without accruing fouls. Don't forget guys like Moses Malone either. And then you had Kareem that would've been shooting midrange skyhooks all night long with Shaq unable to block them, forcing him out of the paint. The big men in the 80s were far superior than the ones he played against in the 90s. Who, by the way, were also there as rookies; Robinson, Ewing, Smits, Daugherty.

I'm glad Charles pointed out the absurd double standard people have when talking about the Pistons. Celtics are my team but they were just as physical. Does no one remember Mchale Clotheslining Kurt Rambis or Magic Elbowing Zeke in the face in game 1 of the finals? The Celtics walked off without shaking hands with Pistons after losing to them (except for Mchale who dapped up Zeke) 2 years before the Pistons did it to Chicago. I hate the revisionist bullshit that happens. Don't even get me started on the idiots who have never even seen the 1985 allstar game and swear blind that Zeke froze out Jordan when Jordan went 2-17 and was on the same court as Bird, Dr J, Zeke and Parish and Jordan was the rookie. Like you aren't getting frozen out, you're playing with established legends before you've properly made a name for yourself ofc Jordan's not gunna get 90% of the possesions like he did with the bulls, that doesn't mean you're getting frozen out. Chicago and Detroit weren't even Rivals at that point, the Bulls weren't even a minor threat. Dude's lucky he got 17 shots...
