Sixers and celtics had wars almost every year in the playoffs then. Fights, the works but both teams and fans hated the lakers.

Agree about Duncan and McHale. Olajuwon and McHale are possibly the best post players ever. The best I’ve ever seen. Those 2 had so many sick moves. The “Dream Shake” and the “Black Hole” (McHale). Kevins career shooting % has to be high. That fade away jumper from 10-15 ft was straight 💰

Karl Malone was great but having never won hurt him, or maybe he won with the Lakers , didn't he finish there? I can't remember but yeah McHale was unstoppable!

The first I time I saw Julius Erving was 1970 when UMass played Penn. The Quakers had Corky Calhoun, a 6-7 big guard who was a defensive specialist, who Julius just ate up and spit out even though Penn won at the Palestra. Then, in college at Philadelphia Textile a fellow gym rat told me he had seen Julius from playing at the Rucker playground in Harlem and called him best ever. We would take road trips while in college to see him in Virginia as a Squire or in New York as a Net. The most exciting day of my life as a basketball fan was the day the Sixers signed him. I named a dog I rescued “Dr. J.” because he jumped up and down 2-3 feet whenever he saw me. Class, all the way.

@@TheDailyGold No doubt in my mind. Old school basketball. The last 2 minutes of Game 7 refs told both teams they were not going to call any minor fouls so as not to effect the outcome. In today’s NBA guys tantrum and whine about legitimate no calls.

@@1990758 I won't dare call you crazy!!! Andrew Toney's game gets him better looks for shots. In his day(late 70s-late 80s), it was a big man's game. Guards didn't dare go to the paint. In Iverson's day(90s-00s), it was a pt guard's game. Big men fouled out defending the paint. Toney could survive Iverson's day, but Iverson wouldn't have survived Toney's day.

Larry Bird has said that Andrew Toney was one of the absolute best players that he ever played against, and that he can't believe that you don't hear more about him historically.

Exactly. The rivalry was Boston vs Philly long before Boston/ LA, which was more about Bird and Magic.

Philly had very very good teams from 1977-1982. In 1983 they had a great team.

When asked why the 1991 Pistons walked off the court after getting swept by the Bulls, Isaiah Thomas and Laimbeer responded that’s what the Celtics had done to them in 1988. We all know that’s bs. The reason the 1988 Celtics walked off was bc the Pistons were dirty. The Pistons were dirty mofos and sore losers.

@@gary6754 Did McHale say "Celtics/Nationals" or did he say "Celtics/6ers"? Is Syracuse in Pennsylvania? The Nationals didn't even become the 76ers until the 1964 season. The 76ers and Celtics didn't meet in the playoffs until 1965. By that point, the Lakers and Celtics already had a bonafide rivalry. "Before those final meetings back in the 60's". Oh, really? Between 1947 and 1959, there was only _one_ meeting in the playoffs between a Philly team and Boston (1958). That does not constitute a rivalry. Boston _did_ have a playoff rivalry with Philadelphia between 1958 and 1962. The Philadelphia... _Warriors_ .

McHale was a low post beast...one of the best at scoring in the paint. Dr. J is one the greats!!
