Steam deck isn't primarily an emulation machine. So it's weird to compare the two. Comparing an emulator to a console isn't really an apples to apples thing. It just sounds more like you want to marry your steam deck, which may be legal in your country. Just make sure you sign a pre-nup, cuz in 5 years you'll want a new one.
@@Boogie_the_cat They're both portable gaming machines that run a full version of Desktop Linux that can be used to emulate games and run Linux-native games. Comparison is not weird at all.
This little thing looks awesome, love how it basically is the epitome of mostly everything the general market has moved away from: Buttons that don't ask where they fit so long as they do, chunky design to cram powerful components and an enormous battery, resistive touch screen because tiny and (probably) more reliable, linux because free, and free games because linux and awesome emulators. I really am wondering why the general market doesn't take design cues from that little high-tech brick and design a controller with a keyboard in it that doesn't look ridiculous
@@vcrbetamax I actually forgot it existed because it's been so long lol. Not really that interested in getting a Steam Deck though, playing games on the go is nice but I haven't yet experienced a consistent issue with getting entertained while away from the computer
We need more "painfully long version"s of videos. Definitely the content I come to your channel for. Thank you for your dedication to your videos and fanbase, Ashens! Your videos are great, and your channel is awesome! Your reviews are guffless tatless and what else? Answer: an appreciated length that qualify for full length TV shows. Thank you again!
When Stuart said that everything runs Doom, I was like "That's kind of a broad statement..." - I found my old iPod Nano 2G in a drawer that I hadn't touched for yeaaaaars, thought it was dead. Plugged it in, and it works. Threw Rockbox on that shit and today I just realized IT RUNS DOOM. Dead fucking serious. An, iPod. Nano. 2. G.
AgentTasmania Left (previous) looks left. Right (next) looks right. Up (menu) moves forward and is the interact key. Down (play / pause) shoots. Sliding the circle strafes. Middle button pauses. It's nowhere near perfect but damn, this isn't even an official thing. This shows what potential the iPod Nano did not release.
***** Doom only requires 33MHz. Decoding an MP3 file takes more computing power. So where is the surprise? The 4 MByte RAM maybe? With the source code being opened in 1997 it's not hard to port it to basically any hardware.
They do have these magical things called audiobooks, you can find wonderful, sleep inducing, English narrators. However I do agree with you, ashens could do some great ASMR reading
As a Linux user and Emulation enthusiast as well as someone who prefers ACTUAL GODDAMN BUTTONS instead of a touch screen for typing.... I'd have this rather than any iThing.
I love Stuarts description of how locked iOS is: "It's so locked down it's like a chest at the bottom of the sea covered in cement mixed with Steve Jobs piss"
The story was that Mortal Kombat was originally pitched as a Bloodsport tie-in game but they couldn't secure the license. They still wanted to make it like an homage so they kept the basic plot (secret martial arts tournament on an island) and made Liu Kang the protagonist instead of the JCVD character, which they renamed "Johnny Cage" and had portrayed by Daniel Pesina instead of JCVD.
mortal kombat came about because of a cancelled project to make a universal soldier game using the same technology, so they made johnny cage resemble van dam as a tribute
Ah, the days before every bloody mobile device this side of the galaxy could be turned into an emulation box capable of playing at least everything released before the turn of the milennium
WH250398 this video is very very old, the pandora can now run a lotof native games(like great classics you see on steam like half life) and the ghz is being sold for 380 wich is really cheap considering how expensive pandoras were before, it goes out of stock very quickly but there is a email subscription (in the dragnbox website) that can notificate you when there are new pandoras on stock, and it has been confirmed new ones will come soon the month.
i think this is the CLOSEST we have gotten to the PERFECT device for stuart! i think, if he was making a handheld gaming device, it would look VERY simmilar to this! so i am very glad he got one, and i hope it brings him infinite joy and good stuff in the years to come. X3
And it support HTML5? I have many games I want to play with HTML5 and have it to mess around with Linux and overclocking it without messing my hackintosh laptop :D
MasterShadic2 Depends what game it is. Dont expect this to run BattleField 4, but steam has a few old games, meaning you could probably play Sonic 2 without fucking around with roms and stuff if you dont mind paying a few quid. Then again, the controller might not work. I dont know, its worth a try I suppose.
retrotails I forgot it had an ARM CPU, thanks for the reply and info. I believe there was some QEMU and Wine trick going on for ARM based processors, but it was incredibly slow as one could imagine.
ChickenPika Just keep at it - ordered mine last Thursday, and it came in Monday. Already out of stock again for the 1GHz model, but check back often and you can find it
Makes me wanna play with my GP2X Wiz again, haven't booted that up in years. You can run all the emulators on a smartphone these days but you can't beat a good old D-pad when playing Magic Pockets or Chaos Engine. Yeah, I was a Bitmap Boy.
Citing from their website: > The Pandora is out of production since 2013. > The successor, the Pyra is currently in development! I kinda doubt we'll get to see it after this much time. Which is a shame.
They upload weekly progress reports on their forum! I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out in another couples years, this one took fucking forever too
@@throbgoblin69 First pre-orders due to ship in September as is my understanding. There was an email that just went out which had a survey for how many of each particular accessory they should make. I'm *very* excited.
@@throbgoblin69 The main difference between the Pandora and the Pyra is that the Pyra has competition, in the UMPC market. The Pandora took a while to be completed, but it was a unique project, at the time. Taking a while wasn't a big deal. These days, taking a while to reach completion can potentially kill quite a bit of the hype, since there are alternatives. I'm watching this video on a GPD Win Max, for example, and I'm typing this comment out with it. There's also competition with SMCs that use ARM processors. The Raspberry Pi line has already reached Dreamcast emulation, for the most part, by the Raspberry Pi 4 B model, and there is at least a single portable gaming shell for housing an entire RP4B. Not to mention gaming shells for the Compute Module 3+.
@@MrNobody47710 on top of all that there is a wide range of Single Board Computer handhelds for playing all sorts of older games, and the good ones of those can be had for 100$ or less.
@@Larkatiel yeah but if there's no way to access a full Linux operating system, install desktop software and use a keyboard and no more extra devices required, it isn't the same. There might be a better alternative out there, a more up to date version of Open Pandora
@@MrVidification there's such thing as desktop mode on the deck, which is a full Linux os, and it is possible to connect a keyboard and mouse using an otg cable
@@Larkatiel in that case the deck is closer to a standard desktop computer than a 'do everything' handheld. I'm sure it's a lot faster than this pandora device anyway :)
Dsuranix While I agree with your first statement, I am just gonna throw in an Nvidia Shield for £180, and lets be honest, streaming Skyrim to an android console is really cool.
The thing is,older games don't hold much appeal,so sitting down on yer desk, opening up zsnes and then playing chrono trigger or something is way more tedious than just sloutching on yer bed, staring at a small screen and using those nice digital controls to play super metroid or banjo kazooie. This is only for the sake of portability.
So I watch all your videos right? But later on I put them on because your voice helps me sleep. I never sleep better than when I have your videos playing. So soothing.
So weird that painfully long is 45 minutes for 2011 Ashens, and some RU-vidrs nowadays consider the standard of quality is to have the review's content be 2-3 times longer than the source material when their source material is a movie or another video.
marioandpeefan09 So dead games on dead consoles that are not sold anymore is piracy? Please tell me more how buying easter candy after easter at 75 percent off is stealing
this brings back memories. the pandora was so ambitious and ahead of its time- it should be made into a film, all the b.s with the original creator. my fave ashens review, especially this long. hope you review the pyra
+hunn20004 For the Pandora, there are native ports of Diablo 1/2 (plus all expansion). Unfortunately, you'd have to go on the boards and ask for one second-hand (after specifying which model you'd like) or track one down. Production has ceased in favor of development of its successor, the Pyra.
So, are you saying the BBC Micro and Acorn Archimedes aren't personal computers? They may be old but still ARM PCs. ARM is a CPU architecture, it can be used in full sized desktop PCs. Any computer that is designed for an individual is a personal computer, that includes the OpenPandora.
@@rurudtsafg it's pretty much just because it's a rare electronic device rather than the actual usability now. Kinda hate the used tech market because of shit like that, there's cool stuff out there that's ludicrously priced because some idiots will pay it.
Looking at this now, it just makes me sad because the keyboard and stick interface looks like what the iControlPad 2 was supposed to look like. That project's death is the sole reason I will never, ever support a crowd-funded project again (and I wasn't even a backer, but I wanted to be; either way, opened my eyes to how unpredictable a crowd-funded project can be).
Roney Desousa Canceling Kickstarters is still really unpleasant for all involved. It's the death of a great idea and the end of everyone's hope in the project. All it leaves people with is the feeling of "This would have gone so much better under someone else's management".
Ah okay, I thought you were talking about money. Yeah I know how it feels, It's almost a crime seeing such good ideas fail due to some ideas that really aren't very great.
of course it is windows' fault. If it was mac with the same programs, it wouldn't lag. And I'm not computer incept. BTW don't you get annoyed when the screen goes black and then JAVA comes up asking for admin rights. Updates are fuckin annoying on Windows
i own a pc and it lags like a fuck just because i have 200+ programs. So wtf? I'd rather pay 3 times more money and buy a mac and enjoy using it. BTW my pc cost over 800 dollars so it shouldnt be that bad. I assume it's Window's fault.
My Sony UX is a bit bigger than that. It's a little more ambitious, though. It runs full Windows (and doesn't play games very well on its teeny keyboard; you'd have to get something else to play games with).
This is crazy expensive. You can pick up an Android handheld for $40USD with the same specs. Android is OpenSource as well, so I could never imagine paying $600USD just for a keyboard. That is the only difference that I see.
Did you ever get hat arcade board wired up? Or did I mis hear? If no I can help, having to design custom wiring harnesses for my boards: Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Point Blank and others
the price is expensive :S I can find a laptop for the same price which can do more things.... But still it looks very good, because its' small and convenient :(
...Plus it has alot more than just emulators for old consoles. You apparently did not watch the first half when he went over PC ports. All this makes a diffrnce
Its not pirated unless its 1-3 years old your pirating, otherwise its preserving the past. Pirating would be along the lines of (At this time anyway) MW3.
I don't know what everyone else is saying but I have a tablet+keyboard running Windows 8 RT and I can run any 2D steam game and use it just like a normal computer. Are you talking about some other OS?
You know what? Just get the Samsung Galaxy S4 and download emulators onto that. It's alot faster and it has support for full HD. Also, you can buy cheap controllers that allow you to play through bluetooth and basically using your phone as a home console. Sure, it won't be as good as a PS4 or XBOX 720 but it will do everything this does, but better. I know the S4 isn't out yet, but it will be announced in 6 days.
Not sure how old you are, but back in the mists of time IBM released something called the "IBM PC". That was it's actual model name. It shortly came to be called a "PC", and you'd see things referred to as "PC Compatible". Now that IBM is well in the past, it's a last vestige of the old model name hanging on. Language is like that sometimes, it evolves and comes to mean things it doesn't necessarily mean literally. It makes life much easier to accept it and move on than nitpick in comments.
Former Mac owner here. Macs and PCs have their own advantages and disadvantages. It also has a lot of exclusive artistic programs that many professionals in creative medias use. I think iTunes is excellent and easy to use, just like Mac, but it's not the best gaming PC, but Macs DO have games, despite what most PC owners think. That's why I switched, to play games better. Nothing more (I miss iMovie...).
I very much doubt they'll release any new updates or services now that the Vita is out. Besides, what are you losing by jail breaking? You can still use the PSN store and all that stuff with absolutely no worry. The only thing you would lose, is being able to use Adhoc mode. But recently a distro of the PRO firmware released a CFW that supports a few games on Adhoc. I never used that anyway though..
Jail breaking, is when you override a PSP's official firmware from Sony, and install your own Custom Firm Ware (CFW for short). This allows you to then run programs that haven't been authorized by Sony, such as Emulators, and homebrew games (Like Lamecraft, a Minecraft port). For instance, once Jail broken, you can take any PS1 game in ISO format, quickly convert it to PSP format using some free software, and play PS1 games on the go! And it works very well.
Hence the word 'Build' being used. However, it'd cost more than $50 if your going to make a proper one. I've priced it out to about $120 including shipping for all the parts. So, if you know how to solder, you could make yourself a poor-mans pandora fairly easily. I plan to make one eventually.
Kudos to them for milking all they an out of it. Good ol' Nintendo... Oh right and I forgot about all the neogeo, megadrive and atari ST games that are also being sold as virtual console games. [/sarcasm] Pirating will always happen, where there's a will, there's a way.
I use a handheld console called the Cannoo for my emulation, not as powerful as the Pandora but its a great little machine and was half the price of the Pandora. Its downfall was lack of marketing and management.
Judging by the fact that you needed the extra ram to run it and blast corps didn't work, no. Well, at least not at the time of this video. Since it is a full computer, you might be able to get the PC Starcraft to run. Might.
