Open Trunk of 2012 BMW 135i E88 With No Power (Battery Disconnected)

This video shows step by step how you can open the trunk of an E88 BMW after you accidentally close your trunk after disconnecting the battery. Since an E88 trunk latch works requires a power supply and there is no key slot it's a little tricky to open the trunk with no power. But this video will allow you to open the trunk within about 15 minutes. So, don't despair [like I did] if you find yourself in this situation.

Look in the cubby hole. There is a boot lock switch on the right. It's pretty small. That might do it . I eventually found it after pulling my hair out and having multiple specialists including a BMW dealership look at it. BMW wanted to charge me R1400 just to diagnose it.

Open hood connect 12 V power to jump points On passenger side red cap and ground shank. Red positive body ground negative. Near hood release is truck release press button trunk opens.

on my 135i EU spec coupe, there is no pass through by the rear seats, and the release latch is to the side of the battery, not on the trunk itself. Better not ever close the trunk when battery is low or removed!

I have the same vehicle,drop top as well,mine is a 2008.The battery is completely dead and i'm gonna have so much fun replacing it.I'm gonna do it myself 'cos I'm not having the vehicle towed to the dealership just to get a new battery.I couldn't jump start it either since the hood wouldn't open up,just like how your trunk couldn't,Bmws are nice but can be a nuisance! There is a key cylinder above the number plate. Just tale the key blade out of the key and use it :)

You could have removed rear seat back by popping up bottom seats which would expose bolts to remove back seats supports.

On my e88 there is a key cylinder above the number plate on the right side of the bmw logo :)

My 135i doesn’t have that bag in the back seat. Is the trunk still accessible if I pull out the seats

You could just connect a working battery to the posts inside the engine compartment. Then the control system will be live, and you’ll be able to open the trunk normally.

That may be correct with a dead battery that is still connected. But once you have removed the battery, like in my case, it breaks the circuit and attaching a power source inside the engine compartment will not work because there is not a complete circuit to allow the flow of electricity.

That wasn’t our experience. The battery was disconnected in the fall to protect it from discharging. In the spring the trunk wouldn’t open, of course, so we jumped it at the engine compartment and were able to open the trunk no problem. Then we reconnected the battery and drove off. Connecting a battery across the posts in the engine bay is, electrically, pretty much the same as connecting it in the trunk, for most purposes. I just didn’t want people thinking they have to break into the trunk. They can, of course, but jumping it is a lot easier.
