That filter pleating is such a simple yet genius idea. The molds are cleverly designed. The filter pleating makes me wonder if you would be able to add carbon in between layers of material to add a odor disguising layer- probably overkill for a mask but a possibility for other industries. I needed a carbon air filter to add to a fan connected to a laser and the only option that I could figure our was buying a carbon hepa cabin air filter from a car and cutting to size with the laser, this filter pelting mold might be an amazing alternative.
Yes totally possible to also add a layer of activated carbon to help with odors too. The vision of this was to put out at least one design for a way to prototype pleated filters and hope the community can carry it along even further.
You might want to consider using a transparent material instead of the blue material. There still is the argument from anti-maskers that they need to see your face for lip reading. With the filters to the side, the lips would be visible if the mask itself is transparent.
Thank you! I am so glad you are doing this work! I have just one idea that I hope might work. Every elastomeric I have tried doesn't work with my bifocal glasses because it pushes then too far up, so I can't see well. I don't know if it is possible to make an elastomeric that doesn't do that, but if you could I would be eternally grateful! The flo mask has indentations that are supposed to work for glasses, but they don't work for mine, plus the mask doesn't fit me well. Looking forward to your mask!
We need to think about environmental considerations. There is already a biodegradable filtered FFP2 but the fit looks precarious. If a pleated filter that is biodegrable can be mass produced to fit a long lasting elastomeric that would save a lot of waste.
This looks really interesting! I realize the hope is to give people the power to produce these masks in a distributed way, but this design of a fully elastomeric mask that can achieve potentially achieve N99 or even N100 standards and can be folded in half for easy pocketability, it seems like it could be popular in medical settings and industry, especially if it’s highly breathable as you say. Do you think on future route might be large scale production or adoption of this design by a major mask maker (probably 3M)?
as long as the strap is the shape shown in this video, the fit will always suffer regardless of the material of the face seal, because people move and shift there needs to be an ellipses of flat material that is flexible but not elastic, in order to encircle the crown of the head and prevent shifting 3M's biggest innovations in their mask were: 1. including the plastic head securement piece I just mentioned 2. making a front facing tensioning device that allowed the mask to be adjusted or removed temporarily (for speaking or drinking) without having to readjust the mask in any way (this allows all other PPE to remain in place, and massively increases comfort)
A really cool thing about this process is how customizable it is with simple changes. Swap the silicone color, add some shimmer or glitter (or don't), change out the elastic bands, and voila! A fully custom colorway.
How fast would this scale if the world needed to make one billion elastomerics per week for a few weeks in a highly lethal and disruptive h5n1? Open source would mean each country would make their own so less politics which is good. Thanks.
This manufacturing process was designed for prototyping. The kind of scaling you're describing would be best achieved by mass manufacturing. Our goal with this project was to clear the hurdles that throttle innovation and rapid iteration in the prototyping phase, letting folks both customize one-off designs AND scale way faster to exactly that kind of mass manufacturing.
With so much respect for you and your team, I have to say: it's really distracting to see footage of people unmasked around each other / in an office setting when you're pitching masks to people who have sacrificed a lot to stick to their principles and stay covid-free. Maybe a little note that explains your covid mitigations before filming would go a long way to upholding trust with your audience. I admit I couldn't make it to the end of the video because I was so distracted by wondering about these things, I couldn't absorb what you were saying.
I watch all of Aaron's videos, and he's transparent about using far-UVC, PRC testing, and masks in the office. I didn't need him to go through this again for this video. I liked seeing their facial expressions.
@@madeleinetodd8199 I’ve been a fan for a long time too. It just would have been nice to add a little note, either in on-screen text or in the video description, to address the elephant in the room. Most people in the world let this stuff go completely unaddressed, or walk back mitigations that they once promised, so I don’t think I’m alone in feeling a bit sensitive and wary about what we see. The benefit of the doubt is just wearing a bit thin these days, after so many years and so many betrayals! I believe you and I believe him and I believe he’s doing the right stuff-it just would have been nice to see some type of acknowledgment of it, to settle our minds and let us just listen to what they have to say.
Thanks for bringing this up! We're adding a Covid/Airborne Illness Mitigation Disclosure to this and all past and future updates. The decision to film unmasked is an intentional choice: we want to reflect our actual working conditions *and* it is important to us that our updates are as accessible as possible to the largest number of people possible. Often, folks find it easier to hear and process spoken audio this way. We're lucky be able to offer this and stay safe simultaneously.
@@openaeros1227 amazing!!!! thank you so much for responding and for adding that totally excellent disclosure. It goes SO far to achieve peace of mind and allow me to continue to support your amazing work wholeheartedly!! Please continue setting such wonderful standards, both in your workplace and in your video content!! Your intelligence and sensitivity is so warmly received and so desperately needed. Happily giving the video another listen as it completely deserves my full attention, and I will share it with my contacts too
