In today's video we will cover something different from our usual topic of discussion. AI and the future of labor market are the topics that interest me a lot for the past couple of years and with the release of ChatGPT I think of this more often.
Watch this video to see whether your job or future career will be affected by the AI replacement in the near future.

I just got laid off from an IT company already because of "lack of work" and as a project coordinator/technician, I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth staying in the industry and maybe try to get a new career that ai won't take.... It's so hard to think about.
@RegularRegs

The lack of work was an absolute lie but it is what it is. This happened today. Maybe I'm still salty. But we just got acquired by a company with a CEO who was involved in ai deployments and even project coordinators who need to speak to people on the phone and do quite a lot that I haven't seen get automated yet. I was honestly excited to possibly work in coordinating the deployments of these systems. But yeah we're all done in the end.. Give me UBI and let me continue educating myself and work on artistic projects. 😢😢

@@RegularRegs Sorry to hear brother. It's happens to us all at some point during our career. Usually when one company takes over another, the CEO needs to show he is pushing up profits. And the only bright idea he can come up with is cutting positions regardless of the mess he creates in the company. But dust yourself off and get back on the horse. It may take a while but you will get back in. Just be flexible in your thinking.

People always say Accountants will be replaced…but accounting involves alot of judgment, nuance, & guesswork. Most clients don’t remember or know the details of their transactions…so we have to fill in the gaps. Nobody tells us to, we just know.
@mth469
@mth469 Год назад
All that stuff can be replaced by blockchain which keeps track of everything. No guess work required. Accountants will be as obsolete as the horse and buggy. The only benefit of an accountant would be for cooking the books. But even that task will be impossible with blockchain.

Wow, excellent discussion! Your knowledge and passion for this subject are inspiring. I've been applying for tech jobs for 10 months, and the entire HR process seems very dated. I think my experience as an entrepreneur is being undervalued. Resourcefulness and creative thinking are not in demand. Meanwhile, I'm expected to recite code that will be written by the language model. This tells me I'm searching for the wrong jobs for me. How do you think the workforce will evolve? I think there will be fewer jobs available if one person can use the power of AI to perform many jobs. So, how does this transform the economy? I look forward to more of your videos, Mr. Yan.

Hi, Paul. Great video! Got my sub. I'm a longtime English teacher to Chinese students. I lived and worked in China (mostly Chengdu) for about 10 years of my life but I've been back in the States since 2019. As an online teacher who uses GPT4 in every class, I'm watching as AI capabilities rocket past us and counting down the days when the government over there lifts restrictions and people realize that English won't be needed soon for communication or to land jobs based on the employees' ability to understand what's going on in meetings. Maybe they'll use English just to be able to socialize with others from around the world. I don't know. It feels like whenever I think of a skill or area that would require my or my students' labor in the future, I could imagine how something already here or soon to arrive could do that too. I'm afraid that the fruits of this tech will all be pumped into continuing to prop up the neoliberal model and people will scrape and claw for the last remaining scraps of a world that they could've just allowed to become much more abundant: that there'll be something like a million haves and 9 billion have nots. There are a lot of people who just get by doing their jobs because that job is tedious. Flood the market with 10x as many passable or better goods and services, and those small laborers enjoying that tedium job security won't have the resources and customers won't have the attention or bandwidth to care about the good or service that actually goes to supporting thousands of such working people rather than one monopolistic AI business machine's owner. Thoughts about the implications on global and local society, economics, and politics?

I don't know how much history you know but the existence of a, "middle class," is an aberration. For most of recorded human history it's been the very many peasants and the very few, "Lords and Ladies." You can bet that human nature hasn't really changed at all in that relatively short (in evolutionary terms) period of time. The modern day lords and ladies still want to keep the peasants in their place. It's funny, just the other day I was telling my son that great wealth and power isn't so much about gaining even more. It's mostly about preventing the peasants from gaining more wealth and power and always has been. I'm certainly no professional historian but what I have learned shows very clearly that the people at the top spend a pretty large amount of energy on preventing the peasants from challenging the existing power structures. The AI, "arms race," is worse than the nuclear arms race ever was. Everyone was well aware that, while having nuclear weapons provided an immense amount of power in the world, it was a power that could never be used. This is different. AI is the power of intelligence. It is the capacity to not only destroy your enemies but to control them without even firing a shot. There is simply no way this power will not be abused. Imagine what will happen when AI is turned to solving the problem of convincing people that they simply cannot live without your product. Combine the speed of calculation of even the current AI systems with the massive amounts of data collected about every person and you have a truly nightmarish dystopian future that Orwell and Huxley could never have imagined. And the lords and ladies will control this power. Human nature hasn't changed. We are not wise enough to use the things we devise.

However, it is also possible that another employer that is better capitalized will want to accomplish twice as much work as that first company, thus creating a new position. Remember, employers are also competing with each other.

It’s going to be *really* healthy for both the economy and society. Since the Industrial Revolution, Automation has affected blue collar jobs more, to the point that society began snubbing such jobs. Now where are we? To achieve “The First-World Dream”, you need to get into massive debt to meet increasingly rising standards of education. All the while, industry has been greatly offshored, and what jobs remain are low paying, staffed by an aging and/or resentful workforce. With AI and Robotics making all work extremely efficient, I see the day where even grocery store clerks could be paid well, and where it’s easier to start your own business than ever. That’s the economy and society of the future, one where money earned is more tied to value produced than ever before.

The invention of the electronic calculator didn’t replace or get rid of Mathematicians. And being able to run math in your head still beats someone who can only solve calculations using a tool. And before excel spreadsheets accountants used to use paper form to run amortization tables. I see AI as a step in not replacing human intelligence but now hopeful that our future generation now has a capable tool to enhancing intelligence given that many kids can no longer compete on traditional education models. AI seemingly provided the access to intelligence for many that were not previously attainable.

9:59 - Active Listening? AI is not replacing anything significant in the short term. I’m big on AI, getting certified in AI. I was a Banker in 2008, and it took me a few years to realize that my career wasn’t coming back & the skill set I developed was obsolete. I put years of training into IT & work IT Project Management with Healthcare. I’m studying for AI certification, I see the money & advantages. But I also know business. No AI is replacing what Active Listening does. It influences people, and that’s in all interactions. AI right now, it’s a tool. Like using excel. I’m the future, look, every job has an expiration date from the Roman Emperor to the Pony Express. Bank Manager to Technical Product Owner. I didn’t know what a Product Owner was in 2008, heck, was there even a real roe that existed with that title? Keep learning, adapting and using tools that stand you out, don’t fear it.

It's a costly mistake to base career choices on the current status of technology when it is evolving exponentially. At first there will be no intellectual task for which a human is more efficient, more creative, more reliable nor cheaper than AI. Which means the end users will get their intellectual services directly from AI at electricity cost roughly speaking. Then, dextrous robotics are going to catch up immediately after because the bottleneck is software. Any physical task can therefore be performed by AI operated robots much more efficiently. The current path leads to human labour not being required anymore and that breaks the current social and economic order of the world based on revenue in exchange of labour. No labour no revenue. No revenue no customer. No customer no business. No business no economy. You can individually try to flee the flood and run to the still emerging spots of land but eventually the current order will break and the solution can only be political. If we do not collectively accept to renounce the status game and accept to share the benefits of progress and give up enslaving humans unnecessarily, then we're collectively running to the edge of the cliff.

I highly doubt that mathematicians can be replaced by AI. Real mathematicians either invent new mathematics (which has to somehow fit into current gaps of systems of mathematics already built or extend it logically) or look at current mathematical inventions/theorems and find alternate proofs for something already proven. Highly doubt that such activities can be replaced. Sure, AI might have "chains of thoughts", but not everyone with "chains of thoughts" can say... find an alternate proof for Fermat's last theorem. Also, task execution is an extremely vague concept. A task may have several layers of abstractions. Something like coding up an existing algorithm is straight forward and can be automated, but something like design Facebook will take too much trade-off and "gut" decisions to ever be automated (at least using classical computing as we currently do - quantum computing is a different beast on its own). Also, even if some GPT can spit out output products, without specialised knowledge, such products will make 0 sense to someone without the specific knowledge. For e.g. if chatGPT somehow proves P = NP, would say a travelling car salesman be able to check if the proof is correct? Checking and filling in the gaps in such a proof will always take a skilled mathematician or a team of skilled mathematicians (if such a proof is even close to correctness in the first place).

My thinking as well. Having experienced both CS and maths studies, I highly doubt these machines could come up with new proofs. However, I kind of hope I'm wrong, at least when it comes to somewhat well-proven theorems. There are proofs to theorems that are sound, but don not 'feel' useful. I don't know how to express it better, yet I sometimes wished the certain proofs used a different point of view lol

There is a great deal of creativity in menial activity. Once automated, there will be far less diversity in life. You can see it already. Maintenance of parks and gardens has become a tick box activity. Who looks at the flowers any more? If you are truly wealthy you will invest in creative people to do menial tasks. They will give you what you don't want, and you will learn to enjoy it. As a wealthy person you will do it because you trust the humanity of the person who made you do it. Learning is life.
