In this video, I discuss the recent news that OpenAI has temporarily paused the use of their AI-generated voice called "Sky" in the ChatGPT app. The main reason seems to be that the voice sounds too similar to the actress Scarlett Johansson, reminiscent of the AI voice assistant in the movie "Her."

My mom and stepdad always used a French male assistant voice named 'Jacques' in their GPS roadmap software. It disappeared with an update and they felt sad about that. I think people get attached to human voices regardless. In some way, "Jacques" was always there during their long journeys on the road.

"Losing access" is a huge topic in itself. I personally know people who have been blacklisted from certain AI companies for testing how the API reacts to its users trying to game their system. There's no communication and no way back, apparently. Beware out there, people. Especially if you're building your business around one platform or another.

It doesn't even sound like ScarJo in her every day voice. The inflection in the voice is similar to Samantha in the movie Her, but it doesn't make me think "omg I'm talking to ScarJo!!" it's just a generic female voice that doesn't sound robotic. I hope they release this option again... It's a lot more comforting to have a voice like this talking back to you rather than some random robotic male voice..

As a voice actor myself, I understand the reason behind pulling Scarlett's (I mean SKY'S) voice, however, it was the most pleasing of the 5 that were available. I really don't like Juniper's, which is what the Sky voice now defaults to. I hope they replace Sky with a comparable-sounding alternative.

I am just as pissed about this as I was when ElevelLabs dropped the best voice (Bella) they had. Everyone was pissed. I do think the voice of Sky will be back though, because first of all, it does not sound exactly like Scarlett Johansson, and all they need to do is bring forth the real voice-over actress who they hired to do the voice. Scarlett need to take a chill pill.

Honestly it doesnt even sound like her. As long as OpenAI can prove they hired another actress they could re release. I think they REALLY want ScarJo to voice a Samantha bot though. I don't blame them. The commercial potential behind that is unreal. I wouldn't be surprised if they offered her millions. If they can guarantee her voice work won't be used against her commercially then she might do it in the future.

It's not even about going after lonely people. She just has a great and recognizable voice. She did an audiobook for Alice in Wonderland and its soo good. I loved the movie Her and have looked forward to personal AI ever since. I still think we're about 20 years away from the Samantha in that film now that young coders will have AI to work and code with, but I look forward to it.

At best your opinion is that they tried to pursue her voice to be a selling point for lonely people.. there is no actual evidence that was a consideration of why they chose to pursue her.. if we are throwing around guesses here, I would imagine it's far more likely that they chose to pursue her because she has a very familiar voice people would be comfortable with and with her ties to "her" she at the very least demonstrated some interest in AI voices... But hey, who knows their true motivations I guess..

ScarJo said they offered to pay her for her voice in September and she declined. So it seems like they allegedly decided to get someone that was close enough instead. This is why she has a case too. That's exactly why actors went on strike; to protect their likeness. It seems they only chose this voice actor to sound like ScarJo therefore bypassing her consent (This entire comment is an opinion and alleged).

I want that voice back too. It's not that similar to Scarlett's.... It's more of a thing that everyone who knows her and told her that the voice is similar - it's because she DID play in that movie HER the voice. I like Laura Bailey's voice better. Bring back Sky! It just feels weird now getting information and light advice from a different voice. I noticed right away when talking to ChatGpt that something was off. That is why I’m here now when I realized Sky was no longer a voice option. I think it’s impossible to have an ai voice that doesn’t sound like one of the billions of actual voices on this planet. So as long as you can prove your processes (if need be) then that should be enough. But in the meantime though, BRING BACK SKY!!

At work, for the sake of efficiency, we are investing in voice over AI technology as part of our educational content creation process. I'm amazed at what can be achieved with it and how fast it can be achieved. However, I do not want AI of any type to become a massive thing in society (like social media has become) this is not good and will lead to real people being made redundant, hurt, conned and who knows what else. AI needs to be very tightly controlled in all contexts and that I am not seeing in any great degree.

I want the guy who has this really clear storytelling type voice that is usually on TikTok. He sounds like he could be black but he also sounds like he could be white as well. I just love his voice and it's so clear and expressive. I wish he was the voice of Siri instead of the new Guy Siri voices that we have. I also wish that voice could be on ChatGPT. Too close to her voice? They asked her to voice it. She said no. They did it anyway, and even stated it was based on the voice SJ did for “Her.” It’s blatant theft. Edit - for those comments who are justifying this and saying it isn’t theft, there are several news articles stating how it went down. How after she said no, they went ahead with it anyway and then asked her again two days before it was released, and she again said no. She’s also released a statement with more details. She did not want money… she simply did not want them using her voice for this product. I have no connection whatsoever with Scarlett Johansson, but I am not ok with corporations asking people for use of their talents or abilities, and then having those companies ignore the response when the person says no. That is not a door we want to open in our society. If you think that’s acceptable behavior, that speaks volumes about your take on corporations vs individuals, and you’re certainly entitled to your opinion.

I don’t think it will be long before you can decide whatever voice you want to hear and the artists won’t have any choice. Change voice to sound like …. Sean Connery… Madonna… King Charles … whatever. Chat GPT know this and so they are just being seen to do the right thing in this isolated case , for now. If not Chat GPT then one of several million programmers will do it

I think the idea of seeking a relationship with an AI voice is a tragic concept. There will be arguments that somehow this can help people with mental health issues, but I think it is a slippery slope towards an incredibly serious social disaster. Human beings are human beings, and I don’t care how clever AI gets in writing or painting or whatever the hell else it’s supposed to do, but I only want to experience interactions and art forms that are human-made.

It’s her speaking style that is what sticks out. It’s dead-on there. It’s not exactly her voice tone but it’s close - that feels like they knew they were on a bad road and tried to pull back just enough to say it wasn’t SJ.

I was waiting for the voice assistant to drop in my region to purchase a subscription. Now... that plan is scrapped. The other voices are far inferior. I wanted to have that "HER" experience... really found the voice relatable and something I could believe in. Now... Ive lost interest completely. If they return the Sky voice an/or come up with some other voices that are equally engaging then I'll reconsider. Until then... Ill hang onto my money. Very disappointed tbh.

This is Scarle Johansson fall from grace, not the sky voice. I could tell the difference in the voices in a second, there are some similarities, but they’re not the same. You can’t create a voice that doesn’t sound like somebody on the planet. Of course, if Miss Johansson wanted to mimic the voice of Sky, then perhaps I couldn’t tell a difference. Lol

The voice follows more of the adorkable girl voice, slightly raspy, breathy , lots of actresses are like that, Scarlett included, Rashida Jones, Zoey deschanel, etc. I don’t usually like male assistant voices, unless I can a Jarvis type or maybe Morton Freedman, and the other voice is too gender neutral and the other sounds a bit too hip hop for reading the news to me. I would be happy with a Craig Ferguson or professor McGonagle from Hogwarts

The train is coming for us voice over talent to be out of the job. This is the worst AI will ever sound. As for the Sky controversy, I get at least a couple auditions every week asking for a 'SJ soundalike.' If you're gonna come for ChatGPT...come for all those smaller gigs too. Sound wise, Sky doesn't sound spot on to me. More 'inspo' than 'imitation.' We'll see what happens!

To be fair, the voice of Cove is straightforward and informational. Naturally, all these voices are subjectively liked or dislikes based on individuals preferences. It just seems astoundingly petty to fault ChatGPT for using a voice actress that has a similar resonant frequency and timbre similar to thousands or perhaps hundreds thousands of other women around the world.

Great video 💕. AI will serve the rich only. It will make hunanity more stupid than it already is, Its a problem when an real octopus has a bigger attention span than the average TikTok user. Ive trained wild old monitor lizards new habits in less than 3 hours, on real video.
