Partition vs. Volume. If you have a partition with Monterey (for example) and you create a second partition and install Sonoma (for example) and after using it you decide to keep Sonoma and get rid of Monterey you can't because you are not allowed to delete the first partion so you can't really get rid of the Monterey installation. If you make a second volume in the Monterey partition and install Sonoma and it works and you like it you can just delete the Monterey volume and you're done. Also, you can just drag all your apps from the Monterey Apps folder into the Sonoma apps folder and you're good to go. Possibly there may new variations in the file system but I imagine the utility that comes inside Disk Utility can clean that up if you run it. In any case, I have done this process on many Macs for each new OS that comes out without an issue. My 2009 MBP went from Catalina to Big Sur to Ventura to Monterey to Sonoma. Each time I was amazed at how well it ran on the new OS but I always had a fall back volume. Now, all the clutter is gone and I just have a Sonoma volume on the 2009 - Amazing. OCLP is definitely Amazing!
this is EXACTLY what i was looking for!!! thank you so much! also in its entirety - absolutely beautiful. amazingly explained! i´m a music producer for 30 years and since 2009 i´m running my beautiful mac pro 4.1. for me it was always important not to overwrite existing systems so i can always go back and open old logic arrangements exactly how they were. my latest system was 10.9.5. (i know, pretty old) but all i need is a running machine and not the latest updates. i just moved into a new studio with 2 friends and i want to update to a more modern OS so we can all run on a very similar system. tomorrow i´ll try to install mojave on my mac pro. i´ve also ordered a graphics card because i hears its necessary. i´ve installed a 4TB internal HD on a RAID slot (all HD slots were full). wish me luck))
Thank you Mr. Macintosh for yet again a very easy to follow OCLP install tutorial. I truly appreciate you dedication to the whole Mac community and save our unsupported Macs from the recycle bin. Best CO2 avoiding action for any computer is to give it a long and happy running life extension. Kudos.
WORKED FLAWLESSLY! I was referred to your vids from a thread on Reddit. I was having trouble following the official documentation and your video helped a lot. I upgraded my 2014 Mini to 14.1.2, then a few minutes later got a notification that OCLP 1.3.0 was available for 14.2, so upgraded OCLP and then OSX. I next wanted to test Sonoma on my 2011 Mini since I currently have it running HomeBridge for my smart devices, Plex, and it does a bunch of other stuff. I saw this vid to walk through creating an external drive (or a dual boot) for OSX. Again, worked flawlessly. OCLP doesn't show support for 14.2 on a 2011 (yet) so I added 14.1.2 to a 2 TB external SSD. Now need to get the other services on it and will swap out the SSD and install the 16 GB RAM. Not bad for a dual core i5 powered machine designed more than a decade ago.
Great video, Mr. Macintosh! One tip for your viewers interested in multiboot is to configure OCLP to always show the boot picker via Settings in the OCLP app, which allows one to bypass the need to hold Option key at boot to get the OpenCore boot picker. I use multiboot on my vintage Macs to select among different installations: (1) I always keep a version of the last natively supported version of macOS just in case; (2) one or more versions of macOS installed via OCLP, typically Ventura which works well on my vintage Macs, and Sonoma which I’m testing and is problematic on some of my older Macs; (3) my favorite Linux distro, right now Linux Mint 21.2.
Hey there, I'm hoping you can help. I run macOS Monterey (latest supported), Windows 10 (bootcamp partition), and Fedora, all natively in a multi boot configuration on my mid 2015 MBP. I want to run Ventura or Sonoma. I created the OCLP installer, but it attached to the Windows boot loader, not macOS like I expected. I can still boot into any of the 3 OSs, but I can't complete the installation of the unsupported macOS. I'm trying to figure out how to get OCLP to attach to the macOS boot loader.
My 2 Cents. Install the last supported OS on the main drive, THEN add a volume and install opencore and the new OS. If you ever have severe problems, you can always Otn+Cmd+R+P, then hold down option at startup and boot to the last supported system. The 6-10 GB of "wasted space" is worth the sanity check.
Mid 2010 MBP running Monterey SUCCESS! (with SSD and 6Gb RAM). Zoom and Maps not working as expected. Chose Monterey to avoid USB1 issue. Surprisingly usable for light duty work with little memory pressure despite only 6Gb RAM. Strangely Activity Monitor shows no GPU activity despite dock transparency clearly present. Your excellent videos are indespensable! Thanks for all your hard work Mr. Macintosh!!
At the moment i have setup a triple boot with Opencore: Ventura running on my MacMini (2014) and on an external disk Win11 and Linux MX (on two different partitions). I installed Win11 on the external hd using WinToUSB and the MacMini drivers downloaded through the Bootcamp app. Everything works perfectly and i am able to boot to any of the 3 OSes by pressing Option at boot.
You will remain the best. I do not know how to thank you. I felt that the Mac mid-2012 that i had become new in everything. a difference there is between the old system that I was working on and what is now, that everything is available in speed and aesthetics. I truly feel that I have acquired a 2023 calculator.
I have to say that this is what I did with both my OCLP installations. Both were on >2012 iMacs, so the idea of opening the case and swapping out the internal drive for an SSD was too much of a hassle. So I just plugged the SSD into one of the USB 3.0 ports and they both run every bit as fast as if they were internal drives. Also, I had no issues installing OCLP.
@@sjn7220 Not really, but then I don't reboot very often lol. Actually my larger iMac 2012 does take a bit of time, but that's simply because it's got to time when looking for signs of life from the very dead internal drive. When it's thoroughly convinced that the internal drive is not going to respond it then defaults to the SSD. But again, it doesn't bother me because I only do it once in a blue moon. If you're talking about the process of loading the UI and all that after logging in though, I can say that I've never had any problems along those lines.
@@denniseldridge2936 Thanks. I seemingly need to reboot more often than normal due to the computer crashing for reasons I can't figure out. I turned on verbose booting but it hasn't been helpful in figuring out the boot delay.
Just about to do this on my wife's machine. Any recommendations for which external SSD to purchase? What's the best connection to use on the late 2012 iMac? Does it have thunderbolt or usb type c? Which is the fastest transfer speed? (Sorry I'm tech savvy but I use Windows rather than OSX so not too sure on some Mac things)
@@danludlam1562 So here's the state of my journey through OCLP. The external SSDs I've used have been name brand SATA SSDs attached to generic USB 3.0 adapters. This used to work great with older versions of OCLP, but the latest versions seem to fail when I try to install even versions of macOS that worked perfectly originally. But I've pretty much given up as I really didn't see much advantage in using macOS for my purposes. But it was a great learning tool, as I'm a tech by trade and I really did need to get to know the whole Mac thing more deeply. I'm back to Windows now where all the tools I use for fun and profit all just work. I'd love to have a new M-series Mac though hehe.
Great video! I had OCLP set up on a MacBook Pro 15' 2017 and I went to update it to version 1.2.1...after rebooting I was only getting to the login screen where I would enter my password and no loading bar would appear and it would just hang. Tried to boot into EFI recovery but that also produced a hanging black screen. Was directed by a different video of Mr. Macintosh's to keep an OCLP USB handy (which I did not have handy), so I made a bootable Sonoma drive for 14.2.1 with the OCLP GUI application on another Macbook. I did not build and install Opencore on the USB, only installed macOS. Plugged the USB into the problem Mac Pro and booted holding 'Option' key to get to boot options, then pressed 'Control' key while clicking on 'EFI Boot.' Was brought to an additional boot options Menu where I could select the 'Install MacOS' option from my USB. If you select 'Install MacOS' option on the first menu on boot instead of 'EFI Boot' you may be greeted with a startup error apple logo and link, so make sure EFI Boot first, then USB installer. Waited anxiously through a series of reboots and progress bar pages and sure enough was able to boot to a login screen, enter my password, and get back into my Mac Pro without losing any data. Thanks a bunch!!!!!
So far this works great. Can't figure out how to update to the latest version of Ventura, since I originally installed it. I am on 13.6.7 and want to install 13.6.8.? Thanks for your great tutorials.
I’m so glad I DONT really need to watch these videos you make anymore. In the nicest way lol. Upgraded all my stuff to 2023/2024 systems. So I can take a few years off open core 🎉🎉. Still love ur videos man
Attempted this using the guidance on the OCLP site; greviously mistaking it for a better and simpler guide; many hours later I have an option to install Sonoma but am afraid and can find little info. as to what that means i.e. install where and with what implications for the current OS. Three or so hours spent trying to format a USB drive to APFS but the iMac is apparently convinced that it is its mother and won't allow any alteration. In short I would have been wiser to follow this advice here.
great video, I have an old iMac mid 2011 and thinking of trying to use the external hard drive using big slur or monterrey on my old mac, but not sure though.
This was the video I was waiting for. You are the best! I have a 2014 macbook pro and a 2014 27” iMac. Both stuck on Big Sur. Been very undecided on what to do. I was thinking about trying this first. Not sure about Monterey or Ventura or even Sonoma. Do you have any recommendations?
just spent 4 hours trying to install this onto a usb drive, just keeps re-booting doing same install over again, waste of time really, just glad it hasnt ruined my mac pro
You do such a great job. But I think there is a small problem. It could be Mac's upgrade 14.1 or Open Core. 1.2, but Ram has been affected. I realized my 2015 MacBook Pro is eight years old, but with the problem of loading on the upgrade of Mac 14 things are not the same. Buffering has or could be a big problem without Clean My Mac. I also realize that buffering can be a problem of too many open tabs or programs running in the background. I have deleted and turned off everything but what is needed to make it open up and run. Nothing helps, the crux of the problem is with Yellow Mail it will not open up just the small circle that keeps turning. Thanks for listing. Carl
I was hoping that updating the supported OS while the OCLP OS was on the same drive would get a mention; I've done two; the first seemed to work fine but the second one has brought up an alert from Apple along the lines of: Volume hash error - reinstall OS; so it seems that OCLP on the EFI interferes with OTA updates of the supported OS. An extensive search indicates that the install of both types of OS on the same drive as depicted in this video may have been the only case ever recorded in either video or print - on the Internet.
I loved you video and your patience and positive attitude and genuine passion for the subject matter, but I am sorry to say I spent 10 hours over and over with your video and I cannot get os Monterey installed on my MP3,, 1. I cannot get passed this infinite loop to keep reinstalling Monterey over and over again. it just refuses to cooperate or even to toss me a freaking bone
When I watch this video, the currently available OCLP version is 1.2.1 and macOS version is Sonoma 14.1.1. But my successful experiences vary in Sonoma 14.0, 14.1 and 14.1.1 on internal and external SSD start up drives. The worst case so far has been the MacBookPro13,2 (Late 2012) where the internal SSD can use Sonoma 14.0 and external SSD fails to start up Sonoma 14.1.1 and not even able to do Recovery 14.1.1 (dmg) after EFI 14.1.1. (same versions of KDK applied and Ethernet cable / usb-c adapter connected)
I got Monterey installed on an external USB 3 ssd on my 2012 imac and it works fine BUT reboots are super slow (almost 10 min). Had to revert back to Catalina and reboots are a minute or 2. Wish I could figure this out.
Mr MacIntosh...Can you try the flexx lx 335 Nvm ssd, on one of these old macs, it was custom made for the 2013 Mac pro...Thank you...Show people that this is the best Nvm ssd, for these macs,,,that would be a great post from you...with Black magic Speed test please..Flexx will give you a free one i bet....because of your job here....Go with the 2 tb ssd..I cant afford it at the time....there video shows read speeds of 1535 mbs on the 2013 mac pro trash can,1600 is max,Nothing can beat this , on older mac pros, its better then OWC...
Thank you so much for all the content, much appreciated! I currently have a 2013 iMac with the 1TB fusion drive. Rather than taking it apart to upgrade the HD i have been using a crucial external SSD as my boot drive. Works awesome, but I'm stuck with Catalina. Does anyone know if OCLP installed with Sonoma or Ventura on the external SSD would work? and would i just leave the internal fusion drive as is? thanks in advance.
Unfortunately there was no guidance on the most complex (albeit optional) part of the process i.e. to stop the Spotlight indexing; in the video it seems that just pointing the cursor at the Flash drive icon brings up the relevant screen or maybe it was running the cursor at a diagonal; I spent fifteen minutes trying to find/guess how to open this mysterious area with no success. EDIT: At 11.17 it's shown clearly how it's done; no need to spend hours trying to duplicate the apparent magic trick from the first instance.
Many thanks for this great tutorial. I did an upgrade and it worked perfectly. However, my LOGIC PRO X is no longer working and my FINAL CUT PRO is requesting a new license. Is there a patch or solution around these? I need to sort them out urgently. Thanks
Thanks a lot for this video, very useful ! I have one question. Is it possible to keep one Volume with Monterey and one volume with Sonoma on the same disk (with a Mac Pro 2013) ? Thanks for your advice.
I would like to use the same USB across all types of Macs - Can you install the OCLP as to use for any Macs or do you have to specify the build beforehand? I followed everything, but wanted to use this same setup from a MacBook Air 2013 to a MacBook Pro 2013.
@Mr.Macintosh Need your help/ideas Whenever I have two macOS versions installed on my unsupported MacBook Pro with OCLP, I always have the problem that iCloud displays a issue when I switch from one system to the other and I have to log in to iCloud again each time. This happens every time I switch from one macOS version to another. I currently have macOS 14.7 installed on the internal SSD and macOS 15.0 installed on the external SSD (Samsung T7) the day before yesterday. I need the same Apple-ID on both macOS. 👉🏻 Is there a solution to this?
Many thanks for this wonderful tutorial. Worked perfectly. I did an upgrade but my logic pro x now doesn't boot up. Is there a patch or solution for this? Also my final cut pro is requesting I buy a new license . Is there a patch or work around to fix these urgent issues?
great work allways view your posts ... question i have got sonoma on main drive on mac mini i7 2012 i also have monterey on usb drive works treat if i put in mac internally will it still boot up like it does on usb or is usb boot install os only gonna work via usb keep the expert knowledge flowing
Failed for my iMac (Retina 5K, 27'', ultimo 2014, FusionDrive). Following all the steps, but never get an option to select my external SSD. Everything runs fine up to 14:18 Min. SSD is formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled). Think there is a problem with the OCLP Bootloader (1.4.3) under Big Sur.
I had to boot from external for my every day use because my 2018 Mac mini only came with 256gb and I can’t increase it. Having kernel panic issues after using open core for the past 12 months. But it had been fine off the usb c
Please, looking for assistance. The instructions worked perfectly for me and I have the new OS on my external hard drive. Rather than moving on to the 2nd volume option I want to keep the new OS on my external drive for a few days. However whether I first shut down or restart and hold the option key I'm no longer able to access the new OS on my external. In summary what I'm trying to do is to be able to switch between my regular OS on my hard drive and the new OS on my external. I appreciate any assistance on how to do this, sincere thanks!
HELP!!I have made two drives, one with High Sierra and one with Big Sur, I tested them on my 2013 Mac Book pro and they work fine, when I put them on my 2009 Imac, the High Sierra loads but no keyboard and mouse. The Big Sur begins to load and then half way stops. Any help would be appreciated, please and thank you.
Hi, Mr. Macintosh. Right at the end of the instructions you emphasize that the dual boot will work with a native macOS as the 1st partition - just as we saw it in your video. But while watching I was asking myself if this kind of Dual Boot also works, if the 1st partition already has installed an unsupported macOS? To be exact: I have a MBP 2011 running (unsupported) 10.15 Catalina. Is it possible to install a 2nd unsupported macOS on this internal SSD? Thank you in advance.
Maybe you can make a video how to instal windows 10 to external usb drive and play from usb i got macbook air 2012 5.2 13 inch when i unstal windows 10 graphic card make screen go black i watch so many video and no one didnt show propaply never work
Thank you for this video Mr Mackintosh, I tried this to load Ventura on a MacMini 2014 + Magic keyboard and mouse, Main OS is Ventura OCLP 1.2, could get to 1st Reboot and screen displayed both internal drives but keyboard/mouse not connected - is this just a case of resetting NVRAM and PRAM per issue 251? or do I need to buy a wired mac keyboard? Alternatively should I install Monterey on the USB disk first?
**Excellent video** Is it possible to repeat this process and install 2 additional macos on 2 additional partitions, from 2 additional thumb drives? TIA
Thank you! I have a question: I have a 2015 MBP with OS X 10.11 El Capitan, but I’d like to test Monterey (officially supported on my Mac, so no need to use OCLP) on an external SSD, but I’m afraid that the boot selector tool won’t detect the SSD after the installation, since El Capitan cannot read APFS volumes. Is this possible or do I need to upgrade to High Sierra before?
Update: iMac18,3 with OCLP 1.2.1 and Sonoma 14.1.2 and KDK 14.1.2 works nearly perfect for the internal Fusion Drive EFI startup. But the same process doesn't work on the external Samsung T7 4TB SSD. When Verbose mode turned On from OCLP, at lease I found the following errors: * AppleKeyStore: 7633:195: unexpected session uld: -1 requested by: AirPlayXPCHelper (195) AppleKeyStore: 12139:195: operation failed (sel: 7 ret: e00002c2, -1) AppleKeyStore: 12139:195: operation failed (sel: 7 ret: e00002f0, -1) AppleKeyStore: 7633:191: unexpected session uid: -1 requested by: bluetoothd (191) AppleKeyStore:12139:191: operation failed (sel: 7 ret: e00002c2, -1) AppleKeyStore: 12139:191: operation failed (sel: 7 ret: e00002f0, -1) attrlistbulk_iterator:18315: disk4s1 Spent too much time (69)s in iterating, stop iterating tx_flush:1194: disk4 tx xid 2515191 took 69806778 us to flush attrlistbulk_Iterator:18315: disk4s1 Spent too much time (69)s in Iterating, stop iterating AppleHDREng ine Input : :performFormatChange (, , 8) AppleHDAEnginelutput : performFormatChange (, 0. lin 0, Ilk 1. Have to do button restart. NVRAM reset doesn't help. My workaround - start EFI from the internal drive, before choosing the external SSD startup drive. Note: Holding [control] key to set default selection for the EFI still works, but no more for the Sonoma. It must be done from the Apple Logo > System Settings > General > Startup Disk to specify it.
Thanks for this very helpful tutorial. I’ve been running Monterey on a Mac Pro 5,1 using both ssd and a Samsung nvme, using clover configurator. I wanted to update and transfer to open core patcher so installed Ventura on another ssd using oc from my mbp pro 2015. All worked great, rebooted fine through the mbp. I then placed the drive in my Mac Pro but it wouldn’t boot. Can you or do you know why that may be? Thanks
I follow all steps but when it came to hold down option key to select the usb startup disc with ventura instaler and partioned .. it just doesnt show it. I can see it on my desktop and in disk utility but not as an option to startup. help please. thanks
ive done this exactly the same more than 10 times, from updating to clean install and when i reboot, i never get the efi pop up to say that sonomo is available to install. it always greys out the install. ive looked online, ive asked people. ive got nothing in return.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but booting from external drive fails for me on Mac Mini 2012 (macmini6,2). Tried from SD card, from an external SSD, issue is the same. It's a shame because the machine is still great, but the internal hard drive is as slow as it gets. Is there anything one can do to force boot from external drive? I even tried Carbon Copy Cloner after installing successfully to the internal drive, to copy the entire contents of the internal to the external drive (external drive still shows up and bootable since I tried installing the OS there). But it doesn't get pass the boot screen.
Installing to an external USB drive: Now that I've installed to the USB drive, how do I delete the "Install" partition (or expand the Macintosh HD External) partition? It is taking up 25% of my external drive. How do I recover that space?
Do you follow the same steps if you have a 2012 Mac mini with two internal hard drives? I would like to leave the original fusion HDD alone, and install OCLP/MacOS Sonoma on my recently purchased SSD. Now when you add the 1.3.0 OCLP update into the mix, it just leaves me confused. Please help Mr. McIntosh for I do not know where to begin!
I tried to do an install Ventura an a machine all ready with open core Mojave and it did not work. It keep on looping the drives at beginning. Any comment?
Is there a discord to get some help with this.? I've been trying for the last 2 days to patch my Mac Mini 2012 without success. Followed a variety of video tutorials but seem to be hitting a brick wall each time and worried I'm screwing up my Mac permanently. Followed this latest one today by installing onto an external SSD but even this drive is coming up with an error even after erasing in DIsk Utility multiple times. I managed to get it onto a USB drive yesterday but it was failing at the installing after selecting the Boot EFI at reboot. Starting to tear my hair out..any help would be massively appreciated
i've manage to install ventura on my old hp desktop pc by downloading a copy of olarila ventura from their website along with one of their haswell efi folders everything works well except for wifi and sound i haven't figured it out yet i wanted to try patching a few things up so i decided to install oclp everything went fine according to your video but after finishing up i don't have the option to boot into oclp boot menu i guess because i'm using an unsupported pc that's only designed to run windows is it anyway possible to get oclp boot-menu from my hp "thanks"
Thanks for the tutorial. This is my first OCLP install, I did Big Sur on a mid-2010 MBP, and it seems to have gone perfectly. 1 Question Please: After I option-click EFI Boot, I'm seeing extra USB drives with crazy names like "___~ks ujV_" and "_______p0_D@l". Are these an issue? If so, how do I kill them? Thanks
I have an iMac late 2013 with 1tb HDD which i don't want to open to upgrade to SSD. Can i use this method to install an external SSD with USB 3.0 and have very good speeds?
Hey Mr Mac. I have just put Ventura on my imac 2013 but now replacing it and need to clear all my info and can't find anything to allow me to reinstall Ventura , can you help how do I wipe it clean?
Hello, thank you for this video ! I wanted to follow your procedure but I got stuck creating the USB key with the following message: Error:2023-12-26 13:19:01.291 OpenCore- Patcher8264:44266] Starting./Volumes/OCLP-Installer is not a valid volume mount point. Have you ever seen this type of message? Thank you. Daniel
HI Mr.Macintosh, mid 2011 Mac AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 20 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. The question is which one of OCLP OS is better to install on my imac. Install and forget. many thanks, now running High Sierra 10.13.6 .Many thanks! How do you attach Samsung SSD 840 to macbook? is there some kind of an enclosure, which you recommend please? or is it better to buy second hand HDD Thunderbolt hardrive?
I am trying this using an Nvme SSD and on my Mac mini 8,1 because I don't have enough storage on it to upgrade the OS. I get an error after installing Venture saying Open core won't work on the usb until I change the Target Model but my model isn't listed. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
