In this episode of the CyberGizmo we explore the OpenIndiana Operating system, a fork of OpenSolaris x86 5.11. OpenIndiana gets its name from the original project name for Solaris which was Indiana when Sun Microsystems did the initial development. Solaris of course is UNIX(tm) and is based on the merger of AT&T UNIX System V with BSD UNIX. Solaris is owned today by Oracle and OpenSolaris was cancelled by Oracle shortly after the buy out of Sun Microsystems.

A *Sun* workstation is preferable when doing astronomy. Appreciate the channel and the style of presentation.

Just a short note NeWS was the name of the Sun Microsystems replacement for X-WIndows, it was a Display Postscript based and ended up as part of the Java runtime

Great video DJ, as always. I test this in the past for testing ZFS, and go back in time for Solaris :) Well done indeed.

I have learned a great deal from your videos; thank you very much! But my background is in physics, and I do not understand even some of the simple C.S. architectures/constructions. Here, at time 27:40, it seemed to me that OpenIndiana (unix) is using a linux kernel (5.11, a kernel that will debut as stable in February). If this is the case, then how does this work (or is it trivial)?
@CyberGizmo
@CyberGizmo 3 года назад
Hi Patrick, thanks for your kind comment. OpenIndiana is based on a Unix derived OS called Solaris. Sun always used the 5 infront of the version number since and that has kind of continued, the kernel is based on OpenSolaris which Sun placed into the open source community. OpenIndiana created their distribution from the code base of Open Solaris after Oracle stopped supporting the project. Linux on the other hand is completely different (although there are similarities in function and command names). Yeah I didn't even consider that 5.11 might be mistaken for a linux kernel since you are quite right the linux kernel 5.11 is coming out next month. Thanks for the great question and hope this helps.

@@CyberGizmo you have tons of experience man, unbelievable. Thought I had some exp as I wrote one of my first programs on a VAX and was so proud when it worked without bugs:-)) Well actually the first “programs” I wrote, were for the C64. Man we are IT-dinosaurs haha

ZFS on the desktop. first hand experience Hi DJ Your reviews of zfs type systems (bsd, etc) intrigued me.I decided to evaluate the difference between zfs on the Ubuntu desktop, vis-a-vis Fedora btrfs. In my comparison I installed Ubuntu 2010 with zol. This week(18Jan2021, there was a slew of updates to zfs and other. I installed those and then began my evaluation. My default system is Fedora 33 with btrfs. Being a fresh installation onto a 120gig ssd, I wanted to be sure that I would not have issues with fstrim. I found the command to enable fstrim. From the web, it seems that the zfs fstrim knows when a block is discarded, and it then immediately clears it and restores it to the pool of available blocks. After first reboot, I initially had a bit of rough viewing. I attribute that to the filling up of the zfs cache. After a few revisits, ex, firefox, or the other tools (C, C++, git, make) that I use daily, either I got used to the extra few milliseconds that seemed to be intrinsic to zol. I do compare my zol work/use habits versus btrfs. For speed, btrfs wins hands down. But where zfs wins appears to be with recovery following a crash and diverse workloads. But, I as a desktop user, I cannot prove this last statement. I have long ago stopped evaluating versions of arch and the alternative arch distributions. I will continue to test the Ubuntu2010 with zol for a while. I do not see zfs as a long term desktop platform. My work pattern is develop software using Fedora, do the final compiles with SUSE Leap 15.2 (clang). This latter distro's version of clang produces an executable that is almost 20% smaller and somewhat faster in execution than the current two compilers common to both Fedora and ubuntu (gcc 10.2) and clang 10.x I do enjoy your presentations. By the way, I like the earlier video introduction. Its your branding. Leslie from Montreal FYI & PS. I am an octogenerian.

There are a few of problems with OpenIndiana. (1) ZFS requires 4GB of RAM just for itself. This means you need at least 8GB for a desktop and 16GB if you really want it to work. (2) There are no wifi drivers at all. This means you cannot use it on a laptop. (3) Many of the standard desktop apps like Firefox don't work right. I assume this is because they only test it as a server. (4) If you try to tell the developers about these problems, they don't listen.
