OpenIndiana is a rolling release, so there won't be a "next version". Also, people don't use illumos distros like OpenIndiana for their MATE desktops, rather for cool under-the-hood features like ZFS, containers ( aka zones, invented long before Linux containers) and DTrace, which all originated in OpenSolaris.
@tuxer8345
@tuxer8345 3 года назад
doesn't FreeBSD have all of these, and probably has more software available? (I assume as it is more popular)
@enkiimuto1041
@enkiimuto1041 3 года назад
@@tuxer8345 Solaris invented the format BSD uses. While it does have more features I assume the people that use the forks want to run what they already used to run without risking compatibility errors. It gets more niche as time moves on but Legacy code and hardware are always compelling reasons to seek it.
@saulius2
@saulius2 Год назад
@@tuxer8345: now it's probably true (save for Solaris Zones which can be migrated to jails, I guess). But for most of times this wasn't the case:)

I used Solaris many years ago. Back then it used the CDE desktop environment. The hardware was Sun UltraSparc II terminals being used for mapping electrcity lines.

I think one has to have some knowledge about Solaris to be able to review the Solaris-specific features. Perhaps doing more research before the recording would have helped at least a little...

for that maybe, one would have to view the DJ Ware's video.

Openindiana is gonna get real popular. The folks at valve were demonstrating Steam on various BSD and recently Oi. UNIX based OSs are gonna become desktop OS oriented in the next 2-3 years.
@mr_beezlebub3985

If this is true, then I would love to eventually see Valve support BSD UNIX operating systems.
@RonaldDorry

I could imagine OpenSolaris being popular on desktop if it wasn't discontinued after the acquisition of Sun by Oracle, but with OpenIndiana I don't think it will continue to be usable for desktop for a long time considering its primary focus on servers. And considering the existence of server-oriented OmniOS that has stable releases (unlike OI) and the evident lack of contributors to OI it might be discontinued altogether in the future.
@saulius2
@saulius2 Год назад
@@RonaldDorry: I don't believe OpenIndiana specifically targets servers.

Hey, new viewer here (started watching a few days ago). Just wanted to say I really like your content. You analyze all the aspects of each distro, you demonstrate very little bias, which I really appreciate since it's really hard to find an opinion that isn't severely biased, and scrolling through your videos I saw numerous obscure distros that I hadn't even heard of, including this one. Keep it up! I hope more people within the Linux community subscribe to your channel!

Camera's definitely made a huge difference DT. Video looks great. For some reason I thought OpenIndiana used a Qt-based DE. Was surprised to see MATE. Maybe it was one of the BSDs then.
@RonaldDorry
@RonaldDorry 4 года назад
You were probably thinking of now discontinued PC-BSD, which used KDE for a long time. OpenIndiana has Qt 5 in its repository, but no KDE (although porting it would certainly be possible considering the software in the repo is quite up to date).

Cool to see another channel mentioning this OI distro. Did you ever make a follow up video? I predict OI will become more relevant. It has been a sleeper but secure. Hardwar esupport is a little bit limited, but doable. I think now that ubuntu has zfs as standard and debian has btrfs as standard (by which I mean easier to setup a bunch of Hard-Drives for upon first install, like say 6 or 8), those people installing will start to wonder why to bother using ubuntu for zfs if they want something that is not BSD (as per ZFS license). By that I mean, if they want linux FOSS, the Debian btrfs does all that for them instead of ZFS. So the result will be people looking at other OS choices for ZFS and they will see BSD is perhaps oo restrictive for them (although of course handy such as the BSD to linux compatability layer for BSD-jails). Something like TrueOS makes BSD-jails easier but really those are often used by people planning a server deployment in that specific secure way. So something like OpenIndiana would be great way to use ZFS without needing BSD (or using linux when such linux users might go full btfrs instead when on linux). Having 6sata ports or more (especially if booting off something else like a nvme or usb) is very commonplace on chipsets these days (and RAM is bigger now) and also 8core CPUs are commonplace more than ever, so blake2sp used with zfs (or btrfs for that matter) will be a logical progression for many people to use and start thinking about what filesystem, zfs or btrfs they'd like for their 6 or more sata ports. With that, they'll look at debian for btrfs or open-indiana for zfs. I reckon that is what will occur.

I know this was a long time ago, but the new version has the same installer. The geographical map has field below the map that are not visible on the small virtual machine screen! So nothing wrong with the actual software installer, but more with the noobie installer :) I had the same reaction. I click on Adelaide Australia and could not find out if my selection would stick until I noticed the top of the first option below the map :) hahaha

I love the desktop theming. But no matter how carefully I've installed this thing - it doesn't play nice with a dual boot environment. It always takes ownership of the entire disk. Be forewarned. Better to just give it a small disk of its OWN.

I still own a copy of OpenSolaris, I think it was 04.2008! A few years old. But not much has changed, and that's really a good thing. Unfortunately OpenSolaris can be a little slow, and that's because of the 'heritage attached' to the OS itself. The code base is older then Windows I do believe after all. It's basically SunOS with a few newer window dressings. But, if you've got a massive amount of servers and data to move around, this was at one point a great system to use. But the OS pretty much stays the same, very conservative. I tend to kinda like that, one of the things I like about Mint, It just kinda stays pretty much the same, only OpenSolaris is more extreme. I think it would drive an Arch lover nuts. As a plus not much comes along with the installer. You get to pick what you want. I like that.

@n.prince2458 5 лет назад
This "type of desktop" has nothing to do with your experience. It is highly likely that your ISO is incompatible to your hardware. Find out what hardware you have and try another ISO. Try a different GNU/Linux distro. However, the Open Solaris or, in this case, Openindiana is more stable than GNU/Linux and is highly unlikely to crash. It is more robust and is more scalable for heavy duty workloads.
