What a great selection of gear. Have a great week Tom.

I worked in local press in the early 00s and shot on digital, that book took me from total novice to working photographer in 1 week. That coupled with a 2 month course in Photoshop earned me a living for a decade. I did grads, debs, weddings, Santa, courts... I made €80,000 a year in my early twenties. It was the best way for musician to make a real living. Now, everyone has an amazing camera on their smartphone. Photography jobs are few and far between.

Enjoy, Tom. Shooting on film is really rewarding and makes photography super fun. It is truly an art form.

Great to see you take on this challenge! I enjoy photography, looking forward to this. Another interesting thing about film, it literally costs money to take a photo; the cost of the film and development. You have to take your time to get a shot and make sure exposure and focus are correct, which is refreshing in a world where most people just grab their smartphone, tap the screen and call it good

Now that I've had the camera for just over a week, I'm finding exactly this. Every photo needs to feel 'worth it', and so far I'm loving the challenge involved with the decision making behind that. You couldn't be more right.

I worked in the photographic trade and they used to make a diopter eyepiece's that you purchased according to your prescription. The simply slide over the eyepiece and correct your vision and focus.

Tom you are like a kid with a new toy! So great to see how excited you were to receive such an amazing gift. Keep the lens covers on whenever they are not attached to the camera, same with the camera cover. I’d suggest reading the book and maybe research photography for this with VI. For photo suggestions maybe combine two loves : Photo Film and Film, something to do with work... thanks for a great video

Ah, the good old days. I had my old Chinon CG-5 back in the 80's, taking 1800-3200 B&W film along the Menai Straits at night, or at the Empire Hotel (?) at Llandudno watching old Blue's bans playing live. I have a Nikon D3100 DSLR which hardly gets used these days due to my phone, but, it's not the same as using film and never will be. Get yourself a tripod. Loved the vid.
@TheHatMusic
@TheHatMusic 4 года назад
Chinon made some decent cameras and they have been largely overlooked now. It's a shame, they are good solid reliable lumps. I've shot a fair bit of B&W along the menai straights, though not for a while now. The hard shadows and sharp edges make for some really moody scenes.
@hunterp589

Another interesting thing about film is that there are so many different types! You can get a completely different look to your photos depending on the type of film used. I would recommend trying out a whole bunch. I normally go with Portra 400 or Kodak Tri-X 200. Something to remember; with digital cameras, you normally expose for the highlights but in film it's often better to expose for the shadows.
@TheHatMusic

Portra 400.... if I had the money, I'd not shoot any other colour film, other than maybe a little dabble with Ektar

Hi Tom I idea if you are worried about scrapes on the lens try a filter you can screw on the end of the lens its cheaper then replacing the lens, looking forwards to your fun run with the camera.
@stevecoatesdotnet

Cameras are fun :). In my experience, the old manual focus cameras tend to have big bright viewfinders, usually with split prism/microprism focusing aids and are very nice to use. Modern SLRs usually have crap viewfinders. Unfortunately using either with glasses can really suck at times, but you can get used to it. B&W film can be fun. I develop my own films at home, and just send colour ones out to a lab. B&W is much better if you have an interesting subject to take photos of. With colour photography, an otherwise boring subject can be made somewhat interesting if it is colourful. That won't work with B&W photography. With practise, you'll figure out how to expose things properly, but its worth mentioning that with negative film, you can over-expose it quite considerably and still get a perfect picture - something you can't do with digital and slide film.
@TheHatMusic
@TheHatMusic 4 года назад
That's a good shout on over exposing negatives. As a rule, I tend to slightly over expose my negatives as I like using backlighting and it stops the foreground detail being lost. I never tried shooting slide on the MS-3, but I suspect it will meter accurately enough to do it. The Voigtlander Bessa R series are essentially the same meter and they handle slide beautifully.

Hi Tom, Once you’ve got to grips with the camera and had your first film developed, you need to try an infrared film puts a new dimension to your pictures. I used it when I was doing my GCSE photography at school over 30 years ago.

Depth of fieild> Bracket your exposures to see the differences of focus on subjects foreground to middle ground to horizon the smaller the aperture the greater the depth of field. Keep unused film in fridge in that container. Happy snapping. Black and white is best,read about Cartier Bresson nd anticipate movement shots.

Shooting on film is inconvenient to me. It would be easier for me to shoot on a digital SLR camera, either with a mirror or mirrorless. I also want it to film video. Best one for the job is the GH5, by Panasonic.

What happened to the yellow wrist watch?
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 4 года назад
It died after a good few years of faithful service. The display became very faint and temperamental and putting any kind of pressure on the watch would cause the display to go blank. I've now replaced it with the classic black version, which is also around a fiver cheaper.

Have fun! My dad had a Ricoh camera very much like the camera that you got. He then purchased a Canon Rebel GII Film camera that I have used a couple of times, it has a lot of modes and does a lot of things automatically that you will have to do yourself, thanks for the reminder to pull it out and to take the batteries out of it before they start leaking. I would love to get a digital SLR camera, but just don't have a real need for one as I don't have much of an opportunity to take photos and when I do it is just easier to use my smartphone instead of using a film camera and have to wait to get film developed, etc. My dad has since passed away, but I treasure his camera and knowing that is something that we both shared.
@TheHatMusic
@TheHatMusic 4 года назад
That's a fabulous memento to have of him, and Ricoh built some excellent cameras as well so I should imagine that the images are very good. I'd advise using it, even if you just have a roll in there for a few months and don't take that many shots, when you do get it developed it's like opening a little time capsule.

@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 4 года назад
The only setup that I have up and running currently is the one I've been documenting in my living room series. It uses the Technics SB3030 speakers for front left / right, but a modern AV receiver. At the moment, I don't have any other retro audio kit hooked up, but I'd like to get a turntable back on the setup when the kids are a little older. I also really do miss a proper retro amp.
@TibiviL
@TibiviL 4 года назад
@@ItsMyNaturalColour Yes, i can definately see why a turntable doesnt currently fit in with kids. :-D But was actually wondering if you still had your old setup we saw in the earlier living room setup. I still remember you getting those SB-3030's, i do think they would indeed be even more beautiful with a vintage receiver instead of the onkyo. But that one is key to a great entertainment setup.

I have been following this channels for a few years now and you doing a film photography video was the last thing I expected. As an avid film shooter myself I am incredibly excited to see what you will create with that beautiful little camera. As far as tips go, I don't think I can give you any that aren't covered in that little book (and it probably explains things better than I ever could). Just like many others here, I would also like to lend a helping hand if you have any questions. Needless to say I can't wait for the next video. Also really excited about that G4 build. Oh, one last thing. Maybe Alex (the real MVP btw) mentioned it to you already, but I thought I would mention it anyway (just in case): since that flash seems to be an older kind, don't ever try to use it with a modern camera. It will most likely fry it.
@TheHatMusic
@TheHatMusic 4 года назад
That's a very good point... I never checked the voltage on this one, but from a bit of googling, it seems that it's 44 volts, so definitely not a wise move on a modern camera. That was remiss of me, good spot mate!!

Hey Tom! Great little 35mm setup! I’ve got a ton of vintage Minolta gear if you ever want to expand your collection. The next big step in your film journey will be medium format! It gets very addictive and it’s a great and cheap hobby to get into right now.
@TheHatMusic
@TheHatMusic 4 года назад
Minolta built some gorgeous kit. I've just acquired a 28mm Celtic lens for my x300, and frankly I'm struggling to see what the "budget" part of it is compared to the Rokkor ones. Not had a chance to try it with film yet, but it's a lovely piece of it.

The Hat I have a few of the ROKKOR X lenses and they’re fantastic. I use the 50mm f1.4 on my micro 4/3 mirrorless cameras all the time.
@TheHatMusic
@TheHatMusic 4 года назад
@@LongLiveTheNES I've still never tried an f1.4 on anything. I have a Pentax 50mm f1.7 but that's as fast as any of mine will go. If the 50mm f1.4 is anything like the f1.8 Minolta I have, it's going to be really damn sharp.

Hey! I watched this video yesterday and I was trying to think of a good tip to give you, as I have been shooting film for some time now and it is my medium of choice. So, here's my tip: Don't be afriad to experiment. I have tried so many things that are just weird and that no one thought would work (not even myself) but they yielded amazing results. Photography is still a very experimental art form, despite it being based in hard rules, so learn the rules and then break them is a saying I like to use. Once you learn the rules, you can break them as you please and come up with all sorts of interesting results. Well, anyway, that's my tip. Have fun shooting film! :D
