After all these years, it's finally time to reintroduce a projector to my setup! In this video, we cover some more wiring changes, the mounting of my projector and the future plans for the setup. We've also redecorated the living room, and our progress can be seen throughout this video. There's still lots more to do, so we're looking to begin filming Part 8 in the new year. Links to the kit used are below. Thanks for watching!
Part 7 filming period:
25/10/20 - 12/12/20

Great video TOm. A trick for finding joists in walls is to use a magnet. Get a few neodymium disc magnets. Run them over the plasterboard until they stick, at which point the centre of the magnet is the centre of a nail or screw. Put a few on the wall and you'll find the rough line of the joist.

I can see you're very attached to that color blue, but you really should consider repainting it SMPTE grey. It will help reduce light reflecting off the screen from the projector returning back to the screen and reducing contrast. You'll get a much more dynamic image as a result.
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Thanks for the suggestion! But a reminder that this is primarily our living room, with it only transforming into a home cinema once in a blue moon, so we chose the colour based on what we liked the look of rather than what would be best for the projector setup. If I was doing a dedicated home cinema room, it would be different 😀

Tom, you need to get yourself a fish tape. They're like $20 US. Now my question is, why did you cut the cables? Why couldn't you just undo the patch behind the tv and pull all the cables back through? By the way, the B standard for RJ45 is the one that is used nationally. The A Standard is for phone. I started wiring everything in B, since that is what you'll see inside most businesses.
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Hey Mark, good questions. 1. Fish tape is the boy, but sadly none to hand. 2. I cut the cabling as the 'quick and easy' option. Pulling back through from the TV end would've been a far bigger job. I'd have the soldered banana plug faceplate to contend with, as well as that cracked back box behind the network faceplate. Trunking is also very full and a complete pain in this area. 3. I've wired absolutely everything in the B standard for my home, but you may recall in a previous video, I accidentally wired the double CAT6 faceplate behind the TV in the A standard when I was very tired and rushing to get it done. Rather than redoing it, I've opted to leave it as it's in my home and I know it's there. If it was a business premises, I'd absolutely redo it of course. A lot of things I do come down to 'what's the quickest' - as I usually only have very small windows of time to get this sort of thing done. I try and balance between what's quick but also works well.

Need to get myself some of that stick on trunking soon, need to run a pair of hdmi feeds (i got 20m cables) an active usb run, and 2 240v runs and 2 cat6 runs, any you would reccomend tom?as currently i got it under the vinyl flooring and its VERY noticable :) Also James who bought your old airport extreme and express from me is very happy with them! Hope all is well Now to watch the rest of the video!
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Glad James is happy with the AirPort kit! In terms of the trunking, sounds like you'll need something quite large to run all those cables, might be a good idea to go for 2 runs of smaller diameter trunking with the mains cabling in one and the signal cabling in the other? I'd definitely consult a sparky friend before taking any of my haphazard advice though. Also worth mentioning that once you get up to the bigger square stuff, screwing it on is much neater than using the adhesive. The adhesive has ripped loads of plaster off my walls, whereas filling little screw holes if you want to take it off one day is much easier.
@alanmuir9768
@alanmuir9768 3 года назад
Not ideal but you could mount that golden plug socket "upside down" for the time being. Avoids the issue with the base board for now. Or since you've now replaced it with white and its lower down, I'd still maybe go upside down for now. Of course that multiway does the job I suppose!
@ItsMyNaturalColour

That's a really good point, actually. As odd as it may look, it'll be a bit sleeker than the multiway hanging out the front.

Why don't you use the projector as the main image and what projector do you have
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
It's an Optoma HD70. It was a nice middle of the road home theatre choice for 2007-2008 era. It's a little less capable than an equivalent offering on the market today as it's only 720p and not as bright, but for a 13 year old bit of kit, it gives a gorgeous picture. Main reason I don't use it for primary use is because the room does ideally need to be completely dark to give a proper picture. Newer and more capable projectors can handle some daylight, but we watch TV during the day with the kids etc and it remains quite light in the room during the summer even way into the evening, so a TV is still needed for 'general use' - whereas the projector is there for movie nights.

Just rewatched this and noticed at 1:59 there's a freaking arcade machine in the living room, please tell me you have a video on this or that you're planning one? Also is it a genuine oldschool arcade machine, or a custom made with a raspberry pi or something?

Saw the notification and my crap day instantly became ok again 😄 anyone notice a lot of artifacting in the video? Also how’s the battery life in your 12 Mini Tom? I got it for my mum because she likes smaller phones and deciding if I should buy a regular 12 😁
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Glad to hear it 😀 Battery life is absolutely great for me, I get a solid 2 days out of it so currently charging every other night. I'm not a crazy heavy user though, just average or maybe slightly less than average usage. Apologies for the video. The camera had a lot to contend with in this one... low light, alternating refresh rates of different LED light sources, and then the DLP projector which always makes the camera go a bit funky. I'll try and remember to bring some proper video lighting down when I do Part 8, at least for the long segments.

@@ItsMyNaturalColour Great stuff, if that’s out of the mini I’m sure the 12 would be great! I’m still rocking a 6s but the battery is a bit worse for wear. I’m saving up for after Christmas and I’m halfway there. And it’s no worries Tom I was just wondering if there was an issue with either final cut on Big Sur or the camera itself 😅

I have to wonder, with the light switch, why didn't you go for those ones that have large switches like what we have?

@@ItsMyNaturalColour At least in Singapore, I've been able to find light switches that have big levers, and I like those, as they're much easier to press. I'm not sure if you'd like them or if they're available in the UK, though. Here's an example: carousell.com/p/1024271379

@@kbhasi Ah ok cool I see! I just used standard switches. As you can see in the video, we have a Hue switch so that's the one that actually gets used. I changed them for aesthetic reasons.

I would be the sort of person who prefers a large TV screen instead of a projector. I wouldn't have the time to set up a projector and I guess having a projector (unless it's laser or one of those LG LED short-throw thingies) would be less bright and offer less true black levels than an OLED TV screen. It's much worse when the focus (or sharpness level) is at the wrong level and I would have to adjust it. In movie theaters, there is a counterpart called the Samsung ONYX LED Screen, in which it offers true black levels, and by ditching the projection booth, would offer more seating capacity to an auditorium. I guess you're short on money because you chose to buy the projector instead of saving up for a 65-inch OLED. By the way, how much was the projector you got?
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment, James. I purchased this projector nearly 10 years ago on eBay for just under £200. It’s an older model. To address your comment, basically yea. I don’t aim for perfection and couldn’t afford it anyway, so I make the best with what I have and am very happy with the results.
@JamesTaylorMain
@JamesTaylorMain 3 года назад
@@ItsMyNaturalColour By the way, I'd say your setup would look great with a 65-inch OLED, but only time will tell if you've got the money. And what would your channel look like if you got straight to the point and there was less waffling?
