Opening a Seagate Expansion Portable 750GB External Hard Drive

Putting a HDD from Seagate Expansion Portable 750 GB External Hard Drive into a USB 3.0 casing seems like a good idea! Having a relatively slow transfer rate for its size, and some power-saving issues (sometimes it won't wake after going to sleep)... This video shows my first attempt in opening it, leading me to the following two conclusions:
1) Inside lies a mysterious ST9750430AS 2.5" SATA drive, that being 15mm thick, hardly fits into generally available 2.5" cases.
2) Opening computer gadgets with a kitchen knife is a pretty lame, yet exciting and hilarious way of entertaining good people of the world.
However, you can use the USB3.0 controller from a Sharkoon Quickstore Portable USB3.0, and make it twice as fast, as shown in my next video - together with the proper way of opening the damn thing!
DISCLAIMER: This video is for educational (and fun) purposes only. Anything you do with your gadgets is at your own risk, and opening them (especially with a kitchen knife) will certainly void the warranty (and likely result in an injury). I CAN NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG.

This should be renamed - "How to cut your hand in the kitchen" :)

I got mine open in seconds - used a blunt knife at the curved end of the enclosure. The whole process of getting the drive out, and into a new screwless usb 3.0 enclosure took about 2 minutes. Thanks for putting me on the right track though - I didn't have a clue until I watched your video.

@farmase Thanks for the tip! I suspected that there were some hidden screws underneath the rubber caps. BTW, I am still looking for a USB3 casing high enough to enclose the 15mm drive.

@jonnieZG i just opened mine then with a bottle opener type lever. Worked well. Now there is a metal case that appears to be screwed in so I will have to get a small screwdriver now to open that!

There are different generations of this drive/case. Gen 1 (which I have) is not meant to be serviceable and has thin breakable tabs (as in this video) on the inside of the case top (you may be able to save some of the tabs by prying outwards the base). I ended up breaking the tabs on the side and rear allowing the case to hinge on the front tabs and access to the Barracuda Green drive assy. Note the front light is a light tube to a wired LED. Gen 2 apparently has screws under the front rubber feet.

@jonnieZG Thx for the video. I started doing it without watching and I found that there are 2 screws under the drive covered by the plastic stopers near the front end. This does not open the case, but makes it easier to open it completely later. I took these 2 screws and then used a thin pocket knife, with what I was able to open the whole thing with less damage (ended up with like a third of the "plastic splinters that can be seen on the video). Hope this helps! Good luck!

Just a tip. It's easier to open these from the front. They are meant to be opened from the bottom front back.

Still cannot find a casing for 15mm thick drives... I am considering to buy any USB 3.0 2.5" casing and transfer the PCB to the original one. When opening, try not to damage it too much, so you could reuse it with the new controller.
@jonnieZG
@jonnieZG 13 лет назад
@yoslammer LOL!!! That is a damn appropriate observation! However, I did use the knife because it is thinner and wider than a screwdriver. Thus, should make less damage on the casing. It looks like the casing is going to be reused with a new USB3.0 controller, when I find one that fits inside. These thick casings are damn hard to find! And the original one looks just fine.

@m1k3turbo There are no fuses inside. Try the drive with a different SATA controller - if it does not work there, it is most probably busted. If there are some important data stuck on it, you could take it to a HDD recovery service, but it is not cheap...

Hi Thank you for your informative video. I managed to do get my expansion drive open due to your help! However, I am now struggling to find where to buy the bridge! I can't use the drive unless I can find a new bridge - the connector for the usb cable just came right off. Any tips? You say it's easy to find replacements but a search on Google has proved fruitless so far! Thanks again.

Hay everyone was wondering what you all though, the connector of mine was broken from the green board and googling around i've found heaps of people with the same thing. I went to where I bought it and they told me it was "physical damage" and couldn't be repaired they then sold me a case too small claiming it would work fine. should I try sticking it in the case that looks too small or should I try elsewhere for warranty? thanks

@xGRUMPYx1, you better try a HDD Docking Station. just keep in mind that your hdd is a 2.5" form factor.

@MecTecher You will get up to 62 MB per second if you connect it directly to a SATA connector. Not an epic win, but can pass for an internal media drive.

I have a problem with mine. It was working fine yesterday. but now the windows can't detect it. the light is on and the disk is working but can't see it in windows or disk management. The connector is a little damaged but was working fine can i replace the connector in any way? or is it a different problem?

@21mugen82 Thanks for the tips. I also figured out that myself, as shown in my next video. There's a link on the top of this video and in the Video responses section. BTW, it seems that your comment has been automatically marked as spam by RU-vid. Sorry for that on their behalf.

@ivy5821 Should not be a problem, because even if you bust the USB, you could always connect the drive directly to a SATA port on your MOBO.

@sanchit2551 Yes, you can use it as an internal drive. As @21mugen81 just told - it is the way to go, since the prices of the internal HDDs went sky high after the Thailand flood.

It's a SATA drive, so you can just plug it into your MOBO, presuming it supports SATA. Don't forget to plug in the power line as well. Or you can just buy an external 3.5" SATA casing and put the drive inside. If you find a 2.5" casing that this drive will fit - let us know!

+Sumit Satsangi I haven't, but I've solved the problem by replacing the orginal USB 2.0 with a USB 3.0 controller. Described in my other video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wg-Lezceyh0.html

@Minecraft4Cows The connector is busted. Get another case.
@jonnieZG
@jonnieZG 13 лет назад
@MrStrusz Most probably busted. You can try wiggling the PCB (the electronics board) and the connector on the HDD to see if a conductor broke. If it contained some important data, you can google for a HDD recovery service in your vicinity. It will cost you a couple of hundreds, though...

FYI - There are two screws under two of the rubber feet on the end that has the logo on the shiny black plastic. When looking at the bottom of the drive the feet with the screws are farther away from the drive information label. I am editing this comment to include your updated video on how to open the case using the two screws. Perhaps you should delete this old video so people don't try and follow this technique. Here is the link to the newer video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wg-Lezceyh0.html
