The west of Ireland’s new airport at Knock has a busy opening day with commercial flight arrivals and departures.
On 25 October 1985 the first flight for Knock, County Mayo took off from Dublin Airport. Passengers on the first flight were mainly press and television crews.Thousands of spectators came out in force at Connaught Regional Airport on what has been described as 'One of the greatest days in the history of the West of Ireland'.
This report by Andrew Kelly shows preparations for departure at Dublin Airport and preparations for arrival in Knock on board the 25 minute flight.
Monsignor Horan was the man of the day, the man who had initiated the plans for Knock Airport and commented
We’re very proud of our pilots from Mayo
RTÉ News also spoke to Captain Bagnall about the facilities at Knock Airport. Air Hostesses Liz Howard and Anne Sweeney, both from Mayo, also comment on the occasion and the importance for County Mayo.

If only we had that attitude today towards infrastructure! Indeed, it can be done if there's the will to do so! M20 Cork to Limerick and M40 CNRR - Yes, it can be done! M6 Galway City Ring Road + Galway Luas - Yes, it can be done! Dublin Metro and DART Inter-connector, Yes, it can be done! Leinster Outer Orbital Motorway - Yes, it can be done! Knock Airport - Paddy and Sean said it couldn't be done and how wrong they were!

The fog-prone approach was a cause of lots of go-around and circle approaches over the decades until the ILS was upgraded.
