I had the immense privilege to lay a wreath at Washington's tomb in 2012. I'm British and although we were former adversaries, I am eternally grateful for Washington leading the cause of human freedom. God Bless George and Martha Washington. God Bless the USA.
"They say, George Washington is yielding his power and stepping away. Is that true? I wasn't aware that was something a person could do." - king George iii
The country we live in today doesn't make me proud especially because I'm considered an American by most people at school they always tell me to go back where I came from which makes me die inside and laugh since this country I learned in history class was basically built off of immigration
I have not been to Mount Vernon in a while, but love it so. I want to thank the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association for their dedication. I live in Florida and hope before too many more years pass I can go to Mount Vernon again. Thank you for making and sharing this video.
Lin Herz My mom use to call them the old ladies that ran presidential homes. We visited a lot of them when I was growing up and whether they were run by the park service or what she would refer back to the old ladies
I was a long-haul driver and passed near Mt. Vernon several times but as usual never had time to stop. Seeing the Potomac river was always profound, being in the area where so much history was made. Virginia was like one big historical marker...
Even Napoleon respected him from what I've read. When some of the most powerful monarchs in history are saluting the leader of a newborn republic, that ought to tell you something about that man's legacy worldwide.
I appreciate you George Washington the weight of what he did and what we became is amazing. Shame on the politicians who have taken us in a direction away from his vision
@@ronaldcustard4636 - all is fair in love and war. The westerners won. The natives warred with each other constantly. They enslaved each other and brutally murdered their foes of the same blood routinely. They just lost when they fought the white man. The white man was Superior. Fair and square. Sorry (not sorry)if that hurts your feelings. I am however upset with the way that they were treated after the wars were over. We treated the Germans better than that. Not cool. If you would like a little pick-me-up, you should check out Captain Jack of the modocs. One of the last tribes to fight in the Indian Wars. Northern California around Mount Shasta was their home. Pretty fucking awesome story. West Point still to this day, teaches the strategies of Captain Jack and his Warriors.
I don't know why, but watching this brought me to tears. They just rushed in. I think it's because I feel so blessed to be living in such a beautiful and free country, but at the same time feel that we are living right on the edge of it crumbling out from our feet. We are living in an exact time where it will change... or we will defeat those are are trying to take it from us. I will fight for the latter.
It's amazing to learn about past presidents, let alone the very first president of the United States. I've actually seen President Kennedy's burial site at Arlington Cemetery, but I would love to travel around and see tombs and burial sites just like President Washington and Martha Washington. Mount Vernon looks like a very beautiful place to live, and the general made the right choice to be buried there. His home. His sanctuary. His grounds. Thank you for this video. I would love to visit this beautiful place someday. President Washington would not want to see what is going on in the country, completely opposite of what he wanted after he resigned from the presidency. President Washington will go down as one of the most famous people in the country, as well as in history's timeline itself.
Thank you for the high praise! While it may be a bit till you get to visit us you can check out our virtual tour of the mansion here! virtualtour.mountvernon.org
I would love once and if I join the military, to come and salute the President. This man was the symbol of America and has continued to be for centuries.
Now George Washington’s history is what America is all about. I am thankful for my heritage. Next year, I plan on taking my son around to see the founding fathers. Where America started. Everyone in America should be thankful that we do not live like the rest of the world. They are enslaved in their own country. We have the freedom to do whatever our hearts desire, it’s time America come together like we did in the past. The founding fathers, our ancestors would be upset at home America is today. People say they want changes but it takes everyone for change.
Butterfly 😭😂😭😂😂 man what!? What time period did we all come together!? Was it when these founding fathers owned slaves!? When women had no rights!? Would they be okay with someone of my skin tone being with a white woman today!? We all want change, but some things, racism, never change. Amen for the freedom we have here, but my great grand parents couldn’t enjoy life the way I am now. I can eat in whatever restaurant I want. They couldn’t. I don’t wanna hear about how great our “founding fathers” were when they didn’t treat my ancestors the same way they treated others with their skin tone.
When did we come together in the past? Blacks have always been treated as second class citizens in this country. Back in Washingtons days we were consider 3/5 human. Get outta here with that stokholm syndrome bs!
So cool to see the continuity of American history; the bones of our first POTUS and leader of the American revolution being tended to by a future citizen some 218 years later is enough to give any contemporary American pause...
I have visited his tomb twice. It was an honor. I admit to silently crying. The man was a hero and role model for me and it was powerful to be there and honor his resting place.
Thank you General. My family came to the USA from Europe to escape persecution. We have flourished here for over a century thanks to you and the founding fathers. God bless the USA.
Washington is the reason America 🇺🇸 is Here , why We keep fighting, why we never quit no matter how hard it gets & most important we Respect one another No matter how they are
Got to visit there about 20 years ago. No wreaths, flags, or open gates like the video has. Washington had a great view of the Potomac outside his back door. All in all a great place to visit.
I took the oath of citizenship of the greatest country the world has ever known at Mount Vernon along with hundreds of other proud Americans that day and when I took the oath it was the proudest day of my life. The only regret I have is that I was not born in America. I only wish these people who are so anti American knew what kind of gift they possess in their hands and I pray that gift won’t run through their fingers like sand only remembered in their dreams. As long as there is breath in my body I will do Everything to make sure that day never comes. God bless America and all its imperfections.
About ten years ago I had the privilege to visit Mount Vernon and pay my respects to our first President and first First Lady at their tomb. I will never forget that experience.
Well, if you were a billionaire, you'd have to be a bloodthirsty dick to get there. Not all bad people are billionaires, but all billionaires are bad people
I went to America on a history trip and went to mount Vernon and been in house and seen his tomb just like this video. I've been to Americas capital too and still havent even been to Canadas capital yet here in Canada.
MY FIRST VISIT WAS IN 1948, I WAS TEN YRS. OLD. TWO TIMES AFTER THAT IN 49 AND 1950 ! NEXT IN 1962 WITH WIFE AND SON, THEN AGAIN IN 2018 WITH MY DAUGHTER ! MY SIXTH GREAT GRANDFATHER, JEAN BATES BEAUSEAUX ( PRONOUNCED BOSO ) A FRENCHMAN WITH LAFAYETTE, FOUGHT IN THE REV WAR , THEN SETTLED AT FT. BELLVILLE, ON THE OHIO RIVER IN VA. ( NOW WEST VIRGINIA ) . HE WAS GIVEN CITIZENSHIP FOR FIGHTING WITH LAFAYETTE AND GENERAL WASHINGTON ! THE NAME BOSO IN THE U. S. STARTED WITH MY GREAT GRANDFATHER ! THANK YOU FOR MY EXISTANCE, GENERAL WASHINGTON ! THANK YOU !
@Semper fidelis Semper Paratus ~ A five revolution that started the most prosperous country on the planet. If they don't know about George Washington, it's only because they are too lazy, & ignorant to learn what a great president he was...
I personally had a neat experience at that tomb... 1) I with my Son and X wife were allowed to lay a wreath there. 2nd was during the "ceremony", I felt someone behind me touch me as if trying to get by me (I thought it was a kid)... no one was there!.. true story no BS!... was a great honor to lay that wreath with my Son.. also wonder if it was George himself who touched me...
This was awesome! One of my favourite. Is it possible to do a similar piece on the enslaved people's burial site? It was, a particularly moving experience to be there and think about them.
We lived in Baltimore. I was the youngest of six kids. My older sister's class took a field trip there. I never went there. My Dad was transferred from Baltimore to Indiana. Now as an adult I look reflect back to some of the history in the east. Society is in the hands of the globalists today. So , it is just a matter of time before we will be called to protect and defend Washington's legacy. We should embrace his vision and not let a year go by without a Hollywood blockbuster or a best selling book created to ensure he is remembered daily , along with his courage and sacrifice. One of the greatest men to ever live.
I pray the liberal protestors won't turn Mt. Vernon into a mockery like they have at Monticello. Washington was great, all the founding fathers were great. Please don't discredit them.
"I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have the United States in his holy protection, that he would incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field, and finally, that he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all, to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristicks of the Devine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation. Amen" ~ June 8, 1783 as the commander in chief, at his headquarters in Newburgh, New York. AMEN Thank You for posting this video, GOD Bless & Preserve & Protect this Nation the USA, and The Constitution & our future for Liberty, Freedom, & Democracy.
I can say with pride that my great+ grandfather fought along side president Washington in the Revolution was even at his funeral when he was layed to rest. In around about way I'm related to him, (I know a lot of people, just to say it. but I do have family history on it) I'm related to Martha Washington too, because that same great grandfather of mine married one of Martha's first cousins.
I'm surprised that in this age of PC BS his statues and other likenesses are still standing! Leave our history alone, don't sugar coat it to your liking, tell the truth good and bad!! Great video!
It's easy to think that, but considering none of us ever met the man, how can you say that with certainty? You simply want to believe it because you deify the founders of our country. They did a wonderful thing but considering that no one is perfect, then you can't say with certainty how he would feel about today. I would argue that he would be blown away by a smart phone or a vehicle, or, dare I say, an airport.
@@markellzey1531 We are not talking about modern technology. The state of the country is very divided, both parties have strayed away from what they and the United States stand for. This is coming from a MODERATE Trump supporter.
Because I am a veteran, I was privileged with the high honor of laying a wreath inside General Washington’s tomb. I did so slowly with full military bearing as my 10 year old daughter looked on. She still speaks of that with great reverence some 20 years later. I will remember this undeserved honor until the moment I die.
God bless you and your family, sir, and thank you for your unselfish service to our nation. How wonderful your daughter was there with you. Respectfully, a US Coast Guard mom/veteran volunteer, daughter of WWII ARMY dad, niece of WWII MARINE IWO JIMA SURVIVOR/KOREAN WAR P.H. RECIP, his brothers who were my other uncles who served in WWII in NAVY, AF, ARMY.
Nance Schmance - I am in awe of your family heritage, and honored by your comments. Thank you for your work with my brothers and sisters. People like you make more of a difference than you can ever know. May God bless you and keep you.
You did so much more than simply honor George Washington, sir. You brought honor and grace to every filthy kid who walked shoeless, ill clothed and unclothed, though freezing mud, filth, pestilence, dysentery at Valley Forge, Trenton, Brooklyn, Yorktown. Kids who lived and died for the absurd believe than men are endowed by their Creator, not by a king, not by a president, certainly not by a Congress, with inalienable rights. The concept was revolutionary then, unfortunately it remains so today in so many places other than America. I never served. But I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you gave up for me, and my family. Your daughter is one very fortunate woman.
The man that said, “Political Parties Is Bad For Our Politics”. Much respect to this man, (Our first and Humble leader) Its like he knew what we would become. RIP Father Of Our Nation.
Yes true, he didn't like and didn't support of having political parties or affilitiations. The reason why he ran for 2nd term is also bcoz conflicts were starting to happen within the government top officials and in Congress as well I think. It was stated in his Presidential farewell address, which he warned the citizens about many other things as well that would or may happen such as secession from the union, as seen in the civil war. He was indeed a humble, caring and loving man. America's top President! RIP General!
He's on the quarter, and the dollar bill. Our Nations Capital is named after him, as is the State of Washington. Presidents Day was created to honor him. We have a giant obelisk in the middle of the National mall named after him. There are 31 Counties named after him, and 71 cities or townships. Something tells me we aren't likely to forget him.
George Washington was an amazing man. For a sample of that, read the book, “1776.” I think he would get physically sick if he saw what’s going on today in Washington DC.
alan30189 yes, Alan! Many things have happened over the years, & it is so wonderful when we can see someone Preventing further problems, & trying to return to the original way, as it was before, that it can be better if we would return to our Lord! He is the only one who can deliver us from the evil that has exploded in the World 🌎 today! Gods Word does say, in the end we would have tribulation, but to be of good cheer! He has overcome the World! Take the time to read Gods Word, the Holy Bible! Just a little each day, it is so comforting!
Billie Zotos - Just how much “tribulation” does God need? I think much of what is written in the Bible is 2000+ year old “fake news,” written by men walking around in the desert, thinking they could talk to God. They couldn’t.
As a veteran, it’s been my hope and dream to one day to go and visit his tomb so I can give my respects to our first commander in chief, first President and a fellow military member The General. He was one of the influential people in my life that helped make my decision to join and go fight for our country. He deserves to hear that much for all that he did for us.
Ben Vasilinda First of all, thank you for your brave service. I hope that your dream comes true and you can see all the monuments that are important to you.
@M H Uhhh no he didn’t... He was in fact not a very religious man until his later years. He was often found praying as well when his daughter in law Patsy Custis passed away.
Years ago, my husband and I visited Mount Vernon and bought a cutting of the original boxwood! It is over 20 years old, and is a large bush at this time. I cherish this!
Original boxwoods can easily be created from cuttings from your bush. If you did the relatively simple work and presented it to the estate they could replant the bushes.
Thank you for posting this! I am so delighted to see there are those who dedicate themselves to the legacy of our nation's father! You guys are amazing! I give a big thank you to those at Mount Vernon! Keep it up! God bless Washington!
Thank you for your kind words and support! For more than 160 years, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association has protected and preserved the home of the Father of Our Country. As a private non-profit institution, we have never accepted a dime of government funds and rely solely on donations from patriot citizens.
@@grandmahands1498 Judging out of time is foolish. GW had slaves when it was common. In 200 years, it may be that people in our times who bought items made by Chinese slaves were evil for helping to perpetuate slavery - and you will be vilified and condemned to hell. You can't say everyone does it because GW's contemporaries all owned slaves. There's no difference between GW being judged by you out of time and you being judged out of time 200 years from now. Stop being foolish.
I think of the bitter cold of Valley Forge, a ragged army survived, inspired by their leader, with them in the fridgid temps. Our country held on by a string....and survived. Thank you General. You planted the seeds, and quite a tree has grown.
acydic... Personally I don’t think any differently of him because back then, it was normal and not seen as evil and it doesn’t change what he did for this country and the fact that he’s the father of this country but people will argue that because he had slaves, he was a “bad person who shouldn’t be respected” which is why these BLM people would probably try destroying it.
When my eighth grade class visited Mount Vernon, one of my classmates and their mother who are descendants or Martha Washington were given the opportunity to lay the wreath l, and I got to read the prayer. It honestly was an amazing and beautiful experience.
I ate a pear from one of Georges pair tree, my 4th grade class was on a field trip and i saw a guy picking up pears that fell on ground so i asked if i could have one. He tossed one to me and my friend but he told us not to tell anyone because he didnt have enough for everyone.
I believe that I’m one of the few, non family members, to have entered the Washington crypt. As an African American, it’s a particular point of pride. I happened to be on the grounds doing some work. A job which culminated with the preparation to build the new gift shop. It was an honor after hearing about the former slave that designed and built the crypt. Just walking past the Alabaster sarcophagus of George and Martha, there’s a quiet reverence, like stepping back in time. I got to open the door to the crypt and peer inside. It was just after a huge storm had hit and they wanted to check and make sure it hadn’t been compromised. As a history buff and future Archives Technician, it doesn’t get any better. My next highest honor was to be in the same room with the Declaration of Independence as it was last being restored. Part of what can only be a mass blessing of great timing. This not lost of the fact that I recognized the standing of a black man, in the days of each event. We’ve come a long way, in a relatively short time, but we still have far to go. 🙏🏽
Alan Brown that was legal at the time and the original Constitution had a thing that said “no slavery” but it was removed in fear of losing southern support you just look like an idiot good job 👍🏻
@@redfoxxx2162 you can't judge somebody from history that lived in a completely different time because they will fail by todays comparisons every time. George Washington was a founding father of our great nation and sorry you dont like it. I wonder how things will change 200-300 years from now and people than will judge us by their new standards and people you admire are judged and put down because of how things have changed.
He's been at great peace for the first time in 220 years these past 5 years...but in the last 8 months they're afraid he might start flying off due to the rapidity of the spin...
A little over two years ago my wife had to attend a conference in DC so she and I went without our children (a VERY rare thing). We both had wanted to tour Mount Vernon for years and being in DC and kid free we decided to do just that. I knew nothing about the tour or the ceremony and it just so happened that we were standing near his tomb about the time the ceremony was to start and I actually got to participate by placing the wreath inside the tomb. That was a very surreal moment for me knowing I was standing right next to the father of our country and a moment I will appreciate the rest of my life.
We are all delighted that we could provide you with such a meaningful experience at Washington’s beloved estate, and hope the two of you can visit us again soon!
The actual caskets and bones are in this tomb? Has scientist or archeologists ever studied them? The hair, clothing, teeth, for DNA to make a actual record our first president and first first lady. I think it would be interesting to scientist and the public. Plus photographs of the clothing and shoes any Jewelry.
@@josephdeffendoll3056 The body is indeed there yes, and we already have 1st hand reports and accounts of everything he was wearing when he died, and when his body was placed in the tomb. We even have actual hair remains of George Washington as well which have already been studied by scientist, DNA to I believe. Not sure on the teeth part.
Went there in 1976 & again in 1991. It is a great place to visit. If you get the chance go visit there 😁 you won't be disappointed. Arlington is right around the corner.
I went to mount Vernon when I was 13. It’s a pretty neat place, almost everything in the mansion is original, and you’re not allowed to take pictures of the inside because of everything being so historic
