You're a life saver- I bought one on ebay and couldn't figure out how to get the hatch open.

F-117A and a F-91W. Perfect match!

Imagine the pilot in the cockpit, after an emergency landing with the engines on fire, patiently waiting for ground crew to give the thingy those 300 twists

i guess he can also eject if thing get too bad but that might not be good experience but atleast it will save his life

😁 I get your humor, but on the offchance that something akin to that would ever happen, there were safety mechanisms in place to quickly open that canopy.

Pilot can jettison the canopy from inside.

Ever see the word 'Rescue' in an arrow painted on the side of a military jet? It points to the doohickey that pops the canopy off. System is powered by gunpowder, so you have only one shot at it (literally).

300 "muscle cranks" or one cordless drill?

That's what I was thinking. There must be a reason they didn't use one.

Use drill machine maybe damage the gear ⚙️

Its probally too heavy for one. Cordless drills dont tend to have alot of guts.

I wouldve just attached a drill to an extension with a socket at the end.
@aviationist1018
@aviationist1018 Год назад
Sounds like a good idea but me being me i wouldn’t wanna damage the aircraft by having the drill thing accidentally come off and hit the areas around it
@deansnipah1392
@deansnipah1392 Год назад
@@aviationist1018 nah it wouldnt happen unless you are 1000% mechanically deficient lol You have a greater chance of your drill slipping removing screws

@MaxIsStrange1
@MaxIsStrange1 11 месяцев назад
@@Yeager123123That might be because it’s a manual backup to the automatic system activated by the switch shown in the video at 0:16. Under normal, non-museum conditions you’d flip that switch and the canopy would open automatically.

cranking open an F-16 canopy is a p.i.t.a. too but you only need to crank it up just enough to reach in and turn on the battery switch (once you have a power unit hooked up) then electrically raise it.

An employee let me go back in the work area to let me see this plane being restored. I saw the plane parts disassembled. It was very cool.
@einfachhonig6284
@einfachhonig6284 Год назад
now my question is cant you just hook it up to ground power so you dont have to do it by hand?
@TonymanCS
@TonymanCS 5 месяцев назад
The plane has a servomotor to open/close the canopy but the museum plane is not hooked on any ground power sources so they have to open it manually.
@TriAmpHiFi

@@TonymanCS . So silly. just put the crank fitting on the end of a cordless drill.

This magnificent machine exudes a mystike and is eerie, in terms of 🇺🇸 tech it is considered obsolete, but for the rest of the world it still looks like something from the distant future.

Is it really so heavy that it has to be done with a breaker bar and not any other tool, say speed handle?
@timw483
@timw483 5 месяцев назад
We used Speed handles all the time to open them if there was no battery power. They wouldn't give us power tools on the flightline - too expensive and there would be too many stripped screws
