Great to see this show up on my homepage! Appreciate that you brought yourself to the reaction. A lot of the reason that we're drawn to reaction videos is to see how the music connects with different people. The chorus of the song really sums up the experiences of those I serve as a therapist. There's a layer of guilt and shame whenever there is a slip up. I like how DAX just comes out with the reasons "I got wasted cause I didn't want to deal with myself tonight". You're right that alcohol doesn't lead us to who we want to be but makes us more into who we hate to be. So what led you to give up alcohol, other than joing the British army?
@TherapistReactsOfficial
@TherapistReactsOfficial 11 месяцев назад
Thanks Shaun. I think it was a mixture of things. I think joining the Army helped me learn that I didn't have to drink to be liked and to be part of something. Therefore the function of why I drank before was being more naturally met. Plus there was some practicalities in terms of the effects of drinking, i.e. I couldnt perform to my best if hungover and that was frowned upon especially when training for tours etc where peoples lives were at risk - being hungover just wasnt tolerated - which was another reinforcer to not drink. So over time I realised I could be the person I wanted to be without drink. Then when I left the army I just kind of continued that. There were times when I would use drink in a different way and drink in the evenings like a glass of wine whilst watching TV, or a beer whilst watching TV but that didnt last long as it had no positive benefit for me really (it impacted my sleep, it impacted me in the morning) so I just stopped that. So now I hardly drink at all, and that is being reinforced as I feel fresher and healthier, i have more energy for the kids, ive lost some needed weight, and ive got more money. But it is so hard, i make it sound easy i think but it wasnt, especially when your identity is tied in with drinking - it took a massive culture shift (joining the army). If it wasnt for that I am not sure what would have happened.

@TherapistReactsOfficial Thanks for sharing a bit more about your journey and some the processes that led you to stop drinking, or at least greatly reduce your drinking. To be honest, I wasn't allowed to drink as a minister, and before that I had bad experiences whenever I tried alochol. That's not to say that I can't relate to the "I got wasted" line, just with other things, that weren't good for me. Appreciate your engagement in the comments.

Great reaction sir! This song and hearing you open up about your struggles with the drink really hit home for me. I am a recovering alcoholic and September 25th I celebrated my 6th year of continuous sobriety. I just want to let people know that there is help out there if you really want it. You don't have to go through it alone. There are thousands if not millions of us who have been where you are and are more than willing to listen and reach out a helping hand. I am responsible, when anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help I want the hand of AA always to be there, and for that I am responsible. "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference " THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!

I watch reactions to see other people react to music in a personal way, and I appreciate your telling us your experiences. I was lucky (?) that I learned early that alcohol and I were not a good mix-quit drinking at 15. But there were lots of other ways to self medicate the feelings away and I went down a lot of those paths for many years. Therapist question, and purely curiosity-what is the difference between addiction to alcohol (or other substances) and people who can use heavily and then walk away-maybe even enjoy a drink or two on special occasions? My grandfather was an alcoholic and was involved in AA back in the very early days, when Bill W. was still part of it all. My brother would drink to blackout for many years, but is now sober. Just curious about a professional opinion from someone that overcame an issue but still feels like an occasional drink is alright for them. ❤

Thank you for another great reaction, and for relating your own human experiences. I had an alcoholic father and this song, and your reaction, gives me a little insight into what he might have been going through at the time.

Dax tells such a familiar story in this track about using alcohol as escapism from himself. So many guys do this and when it becomes a problem they don’t step back, instead they often add other things into the mix as well, when the alcohol buzz reduces because of becoming too used to the sensation of drinking. Personally, I think a lot of drinking culture begins because there is not much else to do as a teen, or as peer pressure and simply wanting to fit in. Many men see alcohol as a way to prove they can handle themselves too, which often some can’t after having a lot to drink, so it’s both ironic and counterproductive. Anyway, I liked how you added your own experience into this reaction Stuart. It was interesting hearing part of your story, and I agree the use alcohol to find the funny side of yourself or life is also another reason for excess. As you shared your story, I’ll share mine. I lived in a smallish historical town with so many pubs in the centre and the culture revolved around drinking. I was one of two people in my friendship group who always drank. I did this as a means of escape from feeling lonely, despite having friends, I always felt like that. So it wasn’t the need to be funny in my case it was to place myself nearer to the centre of things. Therefore, I drank a lot in my late teens because I left home to go to college at 17 and joined the partying culture. When I moved from the north to London at 22, I vastly reduced my drinking because I shared a flat with a tea total friend. These days I do drink very very occasionally, but I am practically tea total. So I do resonate with this Dax track somewhat.

It’s not a caption produced by RU-vid, it’s hard encoded into the actual video so it’s part of the video. Thanks for the advice though for future vids as there’s going to be times I need the captions!

In my opinion drinking at a young age and realizing that drinking made people like you and laugh with you was your drug. It wasent the alcohol that was the drug it was the laughter and making others laugh that was the drug more than the alcohol.

That’s why I drink at night. Not gonna lie. I’m by myself I’m alone nobody to talk to. I’m up longer than my friends and family. So I don’t have anybody to talk to so it’s me my drinks and my video games. Am I gonna do anything stupid hell no. I just get lonely at night time. It sucks but I get through it I go to work I make money for my daughters and I go about my business like a trying good father does. Like isn’t the way but it’s good enough to make me smile and when I spend time with my girls they put a bigger smile on my face and that’s what my life is about. I’d rather have this life than be super crazy rich and that’s it. The memories I have with my kids are way better than a comfy life.
