OpenTx Snippets are a new series for 2021. These videos are intended to be short and focused on answering the most common questions I receive on OpenTx.
In this OpenTx Snippet I'll show you the difference between trim and subtrim and why you need to understand the difference. It's not as simple as you might think.

Man, you are on fire at the moment with your output. Open Tx Snippets are top quality presentations of pertinent, concise and comprehensible information for all RC pilots using Open Tx radios. You are by far the best Open Tx tutor on the web. Keep up the great work and thanks for all you are doing for the hobby.

Great info, John, and really well presented. I am loving these Snippets. Although some may not be of immediate use, they are an excellent reference feature for possible future needs. Totally agree with other comments, you are my 'go to' for those OpenTX brain teasers! Really appreciate your efforts, and all very professional! Thank you!

Thank you Alan. Very kind comment and I'm glad you have a handy reference. You'll be surprised how often you'll say, "wait, wait, I know how to do that" after watching a stack of these videos and then trying to work something out on your radio.

Hey, John, great video. I see you can change servo center (dead band) at the end of the rows in the output page. I would assume you can set it to 1500us or 1520us to match the servos that you are using. Is that essentially the same as using a servo programmer like a Hitec programmer to change servo dead band ? How would it affect servo travel to use that instead of subtrims to center a servo control horn etc? I have been researching the Hitec programmer and servos. This Opentx/Edgetx option seems to be the equivalent. I have been searching for some good detailed info on this for weeks. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hi, Trying to get my head round this. We use trims and sub trims at the flying field to get the plane flying straight and level and then later mechanically adjust the control rods to there neutral position and then adjust the radio inputs to there centre position, does this make sense and is this what ultimately we are trying to achieve. Thanks for these snippets I personally find them extremely helpful as we say ‘short and sweet’
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
It's never wrong to center surfaces mechanically after you figure out where they need to be using trim. Glad the snippets are helpful for you ;)

Great video! Side question, how are getting the trim audio beeps? I’ve tried everything and can’t seem to figure it out on my Radiomaster. Frustrating when flying FPV and can’t watch the sliders. Thanks!
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 2 года назад
I'm not aware of a setting for trim beeps. Is your volume turned up? Is trim active in the Flight Mode you're using? If trim is active and volume is turned up it should work as far as I know.

great video. question: will subtrim have a bad affect on a flight controller? ex:eagle tree vector using 2d stabilization or 2d+hold ?.
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
Eagletree can incorporate trims, so it has a mechanism to deal with them. Most other flight controllers do not like trims and advise against using them.

Using EdgeTX 2.9 programming my Turbo Timber EVO , this seems to work until I go to full down flaps ....at that point, the elevator pops back normal. Any idea on why ?

Have a question. I was using subtrim to set my rc midpoint and endpoints to match betaflight requirement. The max has to be (ideally) 2000us. However adjusting the subtrim, i can only get either 1999 or 2001. When adjusting the subtrim number, it takes like 3-5 detents on the roller to see the output number change (from 1999 to 2001, or from 2001 to 1999) but it always skip 2000, just jump +- 2us. Any idea how to solve this?
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
No, it's a mechanical issue. I wouldn't worry too much about it. There's nothing in betaflight/iNav that has a margin of error of 1uS. Just set it for 1999 and move on to the next task. If you really want to give it a boyscout effort, try calibrating your sticks.
@CHRIS-wk5kv
@CHRIS-wk5kv 3 года назад
So..if you set your trim more to right, then reset sub trim to show a visible center value on trim tab... Does that mean that you lose that amount of actual servo travel to the right? So for example, vehicle will fly true now but turns to the left are stronger than they are going to be going right? This seems to be my issue now on my heli..tks
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
You don't lose travel, you lose resolution. Subtrims do not reduce endpoints. They reduce the resolution between the "new center" and the endpoint on one side while increasing it on the other.

Thanks for the video, i needed some pointer going from my HiTec Aurora9x, but i have a question, i want to add "Flaps / brakes" to my full length ailerons. and i was thinking to do a "flight condition" as it is called on my HiTec. with Sub trims so my ailerons are pointing down both of them but still has the function of being ailerions. how do i get subtrims to be specified on a switch for a flight conditions? :)
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
Subtrims on OpenTx don't work that way. They only way I'm aware of to change subtrims is either manually, line-by-line, or at the bottom of the Outputs page with "copy trims to subtrims" This video might give you some ideas: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6tZdBPZ5Wgk.html You also probably need to start looking at setting Global Variables and using those as weights. This video can show you how to do that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KNXBwHwdFWU.html

Nice video :-) I use 'Offset' to center my servo. This gives me equal travel in both direction. Is there any reason why this is not a good idea?
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
Offset and trim behave the same way. They both offset center and both reduce travel distance. The difference is Offset can be set from -100 to +100 where trim is generally reduced and meant for minor adjustments. The only reason it's not a good idea is because you lose travel distance. If you mechanically center the servo you can recover the travel distance and if you don't need the entire travel distance, you can re-arrange the mechanics of the rod connection on the servo arm/control horn to give you more torque and more resolution.

4:15 on my screen I can’t see that 1763us there is nothing in that space, I am using RadioMaster tx16s, what can I do to see that bit of information, and if I can see that would I be able to calibrate throttle endpoints direct from the RadioMaster? Thanks in advance for your help
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
Upgrade your firmware. I believe that feature became available in 2.3.10 or .11. You probably could calibrate endpoints from the radio as long as you trust the pulsewidths you see on the radio agree with the pulsewidths you see on the device you're calibrating.

The radio doesn't know what's on the other end of the Rx. So it will work the same if you had the Starship Enterprise connected to the Rx.

Why don't we call it "centre shift" or something?

I guess the developers get to decide because they write the code. I don't know the history of subtrims, but I know this isn't the only radio that uses them.
