Opera Singer Reacts To Nightwish Phantom Of The Opera | Tea Time With Jules 

Hello JULES [ Tea Time With Jules / The MC's Channel ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Helsinki, Finland in 2005, then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen] from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile). There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I love Marko's psychotic take on the Phantom... It fits so much better than the clean vocals of a classic performance 🤪🥰 (it also allows for that stark contrast between the two of course)

I said it before, I say it again and I will keep on saying it forever and ever: NO ONE CAN BEAT THIS VERSION. Marco IS the Phantom's voice. And we know Tarja: we love her.

Not only is Marko performing that amazing vocal, but also acting and playing bass like a hero at the same time!

The way in which they can harmonize their voices when needed, and make them contrast where appropriate is really cool.

You really need to Listen to "Shoemaker" by Nightwish. It's an homage to Eugene Shoemaker who discovered the Shoemaker-Levy comet that crashed into Jupiter. BTW, Shoemaker's ashes were sent to the moon after he died.

My fav version of Phantom.. the energy, the feels, the epicness. And the Tarja / Marko dynamic.. the best.

Many fail to notice Marco's final scream. We focus on Tarjas final note, but Marco's final note carries for an insane amount of time, and then slides down. He's the 1st one on the final note, and the last one off. He has one of the all-time greastest voices of Metal

Nightwish really put this genre to the global measures and during this show (2005) they were known as a leader of the genre. I also like the concept which Tuomas and Tarja developed with the original NW members and in here they give a great example. This is a cover but awesome version of it...Marco is so great too and together they act the roles of Phantom and Christine nicely.

If you want a few more examples of bands that can blend that contrast of light & dark, or operatic-style vocals with metal, Epica, Therion & Kamelot are also excellent. A lot of people don't realise, but a significant portion of metal musicians are classically trained & those influences carry over into the music.

As much as I love Floor, but Tarja and Marko singing together is just another level

This was my intro to NW too 20 years ago. I loved this so much but didn't follow the band much. My mom had their CD. I rediscovered them last year. Love this band completely. This is my favorite version of any covers.

You’re going to get hit with how one singer is better than the other two. They’re all great! In this performance Tarja is very young. She has taken good care of her voice and now has a successful solo career. It’s interesting to see how her voice has evolved and strengthened over the years. Right now she is on tour and will be visiting several cities here in the US. Just a side note: Tarja is actually sick at this concert. She will be a little more breathy here

Their latest singer, Floor Jansen, is even more impressive. She is classically trained and has been singing in metal bands since age 16. Her range is C3 to G6, and she can go from demonic death growls to soaring head voice like flipping a switch. Yes, this band is no joke. You have a new sub my friend. Tarja is a lyric soprano... and you are correct she switches octave as the arranger (organ player) wrote it as a symphonoic metal piece. :)

Tarja started out as more of a mezzo soprano in her youth, she has a beautifully rich and dark tone, and had to really develop her chest register for the songs she got to sing with Nightwish, but she is a soprano who can hit the high notes too! She's definitely versatile, in a different way than Floor, but still considerably so! She transcends genres ❣ The mixture of her lyrical singing and the heavy metal sounds really is a very special and magical combination, very very cool!!

Tarja had that effect on people,they were bawling theyr eyes out,because they had never really heard operatic/classical vocals in metal before,i know there were female fronted bands already in rock and metal music in the mid 90s when they started out,but i honestly think Nightwish was the first ones to play symphonic metal AND have operatic/classical vocals on theyr songs. And the interesting part here is that composer,songwriter,genius Tuomas Holopainen said that them becoming a female fronted band was by pure coincidence,and nothing they had planned at all. Such a unique part of history this. Looking stunning btw,respectfully and just genuinly speaking.Nice of you to pin Gabriels comment,he is our "new leader" after we sadly lost our "Mother of The Nightwish Army" a few years ago (long live her memory),in wonderful Ann Waychoff,and he is doing a great job in bringing the torch forward in her memory.

I'm sure you'll be pointed to other Nightwish songs such as Ghost Love Score, Shoemaker and Ad Astra, but I would recommend Ghost River from Wacken 2013 show. It has Floor and Marko singing duet - not in traditional opera style but really well nonetheless. The Poet and the Pendulum from Wembley 2015 show is also worth reacting to.

One of the best duets I have ever heard. Everything just works. Have you heard Tarja singing classical music? If you haven`t, please react to Ave Maria by Paolo Tosti, which was recorded in Lakeuden Risti church in Helsinki, with no tricks used but you hear her sing it just the way it was performed in the church with no audience. Another one: Mein Herr Marquis from her Beauty & The Beat tour, singing in her bright lyrical soprano tone. In the Nightwish era she sung mostly as a "dark soprano". Either way, absolutely gorgeous tone, what ever she sings. But she started her musical career with classical music, and that`s her true passion.

Marco participated and won the Masked Singer Finland after leaving Nightwish. So, he is not just an great metal singer, but a very versatile singer who masters also many other genres.

I am of a mature age, and my son taught me to listen to music like this. I was then as I am now, blown away with Tarja's operatic voice and the band's blend of music. I was pleased the way you expressed your opinions Jules, I'll be watching out for more of you.

The guy with the beard braids: Marko the bass player, suitably evil sounding. "That's not supposed to happen"! There is a very dark side to this performance, which for the fans adds to the tension, which you can feel. "Kiitos", Finnish for thank you.

Once you realise this is Marko after retraining his voice a few years after having a botched throat surgeon it should give you an idea of how much knowledge he has in this area.

I really have massive respect at original songs.. But, this is insane!! Nobody can beat this band..

it is amazing. I've heard a few opera singers react to this, and they come for Tarja, and amazed by Marko, singing the phantom's parts.

I like Tristania, some of their older songs, for combining the growl and opera effect. Sequel of Decay and Beyond the Veil are both good songs for creating that contrasting dynamic.

Marco Hietala is one of the best male vocalists in the world. Any genre. He won the Finnish edition of the Masked Singer in 2020. Check out his Ave Maria with Floor Jansen.

Worth listening to the recent Nightwish version featuring Henk Poort as Floor Jansen the latest lead singer chooses not to use a wholly operatic style although she could. If you want to know how to switch from growl to chest voice and head voice flawlessly then Floor is the singer to follow. She has a RU-vid channel where she performs covers, chats and gives vocal tips.

She is considered the greatest performer in Brazil, and one of the few who don't use playback, her face is swollen because she contracted Covid 4 times and her blood was clotting, but even so she managed to record this DVD, like almost 50 years. Some (or maybe a lot) of metal fans dislike the term "screamo". A more common term used is the word "growl" to describe a variety of extended singing techniques. Done properly, these techniques do not involve the vocal cords in the sound production (or are only marginally involved in it). For that reason Marco can switch from the harsh vocals to using vibrato without any issues.

Metal Eric is so much sinister than regular musical Eric so yes. More, please ;)

This show, End of an Era, was a bittersweet time for the band. Before the show, the band (save for Tarja) already knew they were going to part ways with Tarja. That raw emotion you feel through him is the despair that he was going to part ways with someone he cared deeply for. It was a bit of a swan song effect

This is Tarja, she is a suprano, and she sings great. She was the 1st lead singer. You should hear Floor and Hank Poort.... mind blowing... Marko is a Baratone, so he can get up there. He often harmonizes with Floor

Theres a world touring Opera singer here on YT that describes Opera as pretty screaming.

The original Christine actually begins this song lower than in Tarja’s or Floor’s does. If you listen to anyone who has done it on Broadway, the song begins low. Then they quickly move up after that intro.

Trivia fact: This show was her last day on the job. The band fired her just after the show.

Im sure many told you there is an updated version with Soprano Floor Jansen who has been the lead vocalist in NW since 2012. Floor can do operetic, pop, and rock quite easily. Eric is done by Henk Poort a Opera and musical theatre actor who was the original dutch phantom... Its pretty incredible also.

There is another Nightwish version - Tarja Turunen and Marko Hietala (bassist of the band)

both tarja (their 1st singer)and floor(their currant singer)both be sopranos but has diff sounds and anette(their 2nd singer)was more pop soundin and marco was awesome as the phantom ( he has since left the band and gone solo

The male vocalist (Marco) released his first album with his first band Tarot called The Spell of Iron in 1986, so he's a very experienced singer. His brother Zachary is also in that band. I liked your reaction, thank you! It is great to see opera singers reacting to NIGHTWISH, a Finnish symphonic metal band. They have many different kinds of songs. Dark metal, rock, folky, Celtic, ballads, even one jazzy song, and instrument you do not often see in a metal band, whistles, Uillean pipes by the English multi-instrumentalist Troy. The bassist Marko is quite versatile as a vocalist, screams up to G5, growly, gritty, but cleans as well. I suggest: NIGHTWISH - THE ISLANDER, Tampere 2015, (choose the slightly longer video, it starts with Marko addressing the audience, it is funny.) Marko's own composition. It's a sea shanty. Clean vocals. Towards the end backing vocals by Floor Jansen, the 3rd and current female lead of Nightwish, she is from The Netherlands. (You just heard the original female lead Tarja.) But you MUST, at some point, react to NIGHTWISH - THE POET AND THE PENDULUM, Wembley Arena 2015. I guess you could call it metal opera, lots of symphony elements on the backing track by London Philharmonic Orchestra. It is in 5 movements, a 14 minute masterpiece by Tuomas, the keyboardist/songwriter. Great visual effects. Great vocals by Floor and Marko. Great everything. The song starts with vocals by a boy soprano. The song deals with the pain Tuomas felt, hard times he went through - he was given the role of the bad guy - the five stages anger, after the band fired Tarja, actually right after the 2005 End on an Era concert, where this rendition of The Phantom was from. They will most likely never perform "The Poet and the Pendulum" again. They haven't in years. There were times when Tuomas wanted his in-ears to be muted, so he could not hear the lyrics, too painful.
