@@pedjavukmirovic6770 ... it does to legions of those who love her and regard her as very special...as do Floor fans who follow her to the ends of the earth
I’ve never heard a man sing phantom better than Marco. Floor is my favorite Nightwish singer, but I like Tarjas version of this song more. But Ghost love score, Floor just destroys that song and always gives me goose bumps.
After this performance, Tarja (The female singer) was kicked from the band with an open letter. In 2017 Tarja and Marko (The male singer) performed together at a christmas show and that´s when Marko and Tarja reconnected and later in 2023 they performed the Phantom of the opera together at one of Tarja´s shows. They saw how much people loved that they´re performing together again after 18 years and Marko wanted Tarja to feature on his new song "Left on mars". An interview dropped yesterday and Marko told that they have no bad blood between them nowadays and they have talked through everything that happened almost two decades ago, and they did multiple shows together in 2023. Just lovely.
If you liked Tarja you've only just scratched the surface, I recommend Walking in the Air from the Wishes to Eternity concert or Wishmaster from End of an Era
Marko does the Phantom the way he should be done... the Phantom is a deranged madman... a psychopathic killer and this take absolutely NAILS that. Webber is said to absolutely love this version. I will always hold this in a special place because this video was my introduction to Nightwish. Still gives me chills. The word masterpiece comes to mind.
I saw them about a year before this was recorded, and I still remember the chills and goosebumps of hearing it live. I'd seen the Broadway show a couple years before, and this was so much better.
Tarja uses red, yellow and black outfits with matching microphones as a trademark...she is indeed a vocal beast....this is from 2005..her last concert with Nightwish ..the date of liberation (the true unleashing of the vocal beast and warmest, most charasmatic personality)
The singing is perfect from both Tarja and especially Marko and they adjust to each other ... AND the arrangement of the piece supports this merger of the voices perfectly.
Tarja is the first and original vocalist of Nightwish, with her the group recorded 5 albums (Angels fall first, Oceanborn (masterpiece), Wishmaster, Century child, Once (big album). Today Tarja pursuing a successful solo career, I really liked her latest album "In the raw". I recommend more Nightwish with Tarja: - Slaying the dreamer, Planet hell, Wishmaster, Sleeping sun from the concert End of an era; - Swanheart, Walking in the air, Dead boys poem, The Pharion sails to orion from the concert From Wishes to enternity (at this concert you are can really appreciate Tarja's voice); - End of all hope, 10th man down from the Summer Breeze festival.
a vocal beast indeed...she spent that entire highly acclaimed night endeavouring to stay ahead of the fever by constantly changing outfits and taking every chance to rest....one of their most acclaimed concerts....love Floor but adore Tarja since the start
Tarja is legendary for blending her powerful initial, very mezzo voice so perfectly with the band that it become an instrument onto itself...their early power metal days in "from wishes to eternity" concert is a perfect example
@@nicod1361 From 2013?...you are lightyears behind and have a lot of catching up to do if you think that was her best...not that I think you actually will.
my understanding of it , as well...a real diva ..haha....she also showed her alleged, selfishness by returning to the stage to finish out 4 more songs, ( on a night in 2000) after being attacked 20 some minutes prior , on that night, while in the middle of performance....she stated that she struggled for 20 some seconds with the assailant, until her manager jumped in and defended her, while security was lax and the boys just continued to play as though nothing happened..there is a clip of it on youtube..just look for Ataque de Tarja
@@wearehere8925 ...its yet another perfect example of her love and appreciation of the fans...Marcelo ADVISED HER AGAINST going on that last night to safeguard against possible serious damage, but she did it anyway because that is the pro she is...and even in her most weakened, she performed brilliantly in this, one of their most celebrated concerts...while Tuomas, the martyr, went to tie one one with his half-drunk buddies, while all, the exhausted Tarja could do is collapse into bed...she showed them mercy by answering treachery with discretion and that is what saved them from complete collapse...far more than they ever deserved...though happy for Floor having the opportunity to shine after her burnout ( never understood that, remembering how great she was in After Forever and REvamp)...
Came to hear Tarja and was more impressed by Marko. For me he is the incarnation of the phantom. Love his voice in this piece and the interaction with Tarja. Getting goosebumps every time i hear it. Please react to Stones or The Voice of my father by Marko Hietala from his soloalbum.
As much as I like this version, the one Floor performed on Beste Zangers pleased my ears more completely. Floor sings with her childhood Idol Henk Poort, and the chemistry is amazing. Thank you for reviewing this version.
Tarja, at first, had a devil of a time adjusting her strict classical delivery to the power metal timing, pitch and constant key changes but once she did...perfection ensued naturally and for 9 years she was unstoppable....
Tarja adjusted her strict operatically trained voice to the requirements of the metal performance..while with Nightwish, she likewise brilliantly performed formal operatic pieces and to this day divides her time between her acquired love of metal and classical
Tarja's hauntingly dark, resonant voice which so blissfully fills any room she happens to be in, regardless of size...many great performances her and in "from wishes to eternity" concert
Marco looks and sounds deranged in this performance, which fair enough, the phantom wasn’t exactly a stable character. But then he goes and composes and sings songs like While Your Lips are Still Red or The Islander (live at Tampere if you want to give it a listen) and it is such mood whiplash. Funny that you commented about her microphone matching her dress, she actually switched outfits a few times in this concert and she did indeed have a red microphone for her red red dress and a white one for the white.
Really cool reaction. It's nice to see you reacting to NW songs with their first singer Tarja. You should react to some of Tarja's solo songs too. Check out Tarja's version of "Supremacy" (a Muse cover) live at Woodstock 2016, it's an amazing performance and it showcase her great vocal abilyties.
Tapani M sorry to correct you but this is not a nightwish song, its a cover of a musical song. I personal prefer reactions on songs written by Nightwish Tuomas (sometimes Marko). Does not mean Tarja and Marko did not perform a great cover, they sure did but its not Nightwish.
Toumas, Tarja and Emppu formed Nightwish in highschool in 1996. And her voice allways fellt like a 5th instrument rather then a lead singer, Nightwish was all about the music created by Toumas back then ;-)
Good one there Ken! Very impressive performance of both Marko and Tarja! One of the fans' favourites! And what a phantom that is! 🙂 Oh Marko he is always exceptional!
I cannot remember which interview Tarja mentioned this in, but she did talk about the microphone vs classically singing without one. She mentioned that when she first started with Nightwish, she had trouble with just letting the microphone do its work and kept pushing really hard. I think the phrase she used was, "singing like there was a potato in the back of my mouth". But she mastered it very well. Honestly, her sound and her dedication to her craft are such an inspiration. She's done live performances on Instagram since the pandemic started and it's lovely to hear her voice in its natural state.
@@perfectone5848 Her voice sounds so much like my old voice teacher's voice who was such a great mentor to me. It was so comforting to hear Tarja singing like that during the beginning terror of the pandemic. She and Floor have both done so much to reach out to their fans during this time and it has been very fun to learn more about both of them!
@@xfortunesquex ... i hear you...i am still in Tarja withdrawal mode from those sessions...at least Floor has taken over, in that area...Tarja and Floor are great inspirations to me as well...i followed them both from the early days and was always in awe of their persistence to excel...and while today's NW fans are fairly aware of Floor's class and fan appreciative nature , the equally sweet nature of Tarja is somewhat unknown to those who had not been exposed to her....this explains why many still believe the misstatements with which Tuomas has labeled her all those years back...
@@perfectone5848 They seem to both be wonderful people. Anette is really nice, too, from what I see. I think Tarja and Anette both get a bad reputation because they were both dismissed from the band. People don't realize that it's way more complicated than that. And I do think both decisions appear, at least on the surface, to have been handled less than ideally. That isn't to say that I have any malice toward Tuomas or the band; it was just very unfortunate how it happened and was a difficult decision all around. Truly, a situation where nobody wins.
@@xfortunesquex ..yes all three ladies are very nice...and i personally have no ill will towards Tuomas...but the way he dealt with Tarja was dishonorable , especially, since she, out of loyalty to him, agreed to remain in the band but under her terms to which they agreed and then began to resent...his claims about her canceling concert, for instance, referred to, not the original one in Oslo, for which she had adequate notice, but the impromptu one, the following night, for which she received a very short notice and turned it down because of her commitment with someone else ( she was already in the proces of establishing her solo career and put that partially on hold to fulfill her obligations with Tuomas...and the pivotal statement " i can leave at any time" that she made was in reference to her being already partially independent and was said out of heat of passion after learning that they were not going to accept the earlier stipulation that the tours will be very limited, given her health concerns and need for a personal life...he then goes on to say that as a result of this statement, he can no longer write songs for her...fine then..call it quits and let her go to pursue her own career..but no
Marko's voice had to be muted so that it would not obscure Tarja's voice! Likewise, there is songs where the sound of the backing track choir had to be muted for the same reason !
@@mylife3350 - That's not the point I was making. Have them both on stage, no mic and then move away from them while they sing at the top of their voices. I betcha you can hear Tarja long after you can't hear Marco anymore. I assume you never attended an opera?
@@mylife3350 - You haven't seen them live, though (I assume, unless you are allergic to garlic and spend the nights in a coffin). When you - as I do - record concerts you experience how much power a pop or rock singer has and what comes out of the mouth of a fully trained opera singer. Being able to sing - without aid of amplification - over a full orchestra so that you can be heard in the farthest balcony is a skill that takes years of training and most singers can't do that for an entire opera, maybe for an aria and then they're exhausted. Tarja has trained for lyrical singing - that requires a level of power and projection that only a small percentage of singers can manage. Marko has his own qualities - I never heard someone able to add rasp to his falsetto in the way he does, absolutely amazing - but he doesn't have the same level of projection. It's not a good or bad thing, it's a technical thing that doesn't matter when microphones are used (except for the guy who has to do the mix).
Marco has such a unique voice. I love him. He has a band called Tarot. He recently came out with a solo self-titled work, realeased with both english and finnish lyrics.
Think of the audience they performed. Metal fans that loved it. Talk about crossing genres. I was there, a concert never forgotten. The last one with Tarja. Truly the End of Era. Listen Siren and Ghost Love Score from the same concert.
Marko is a vocal beast and many of us agree that he’s the best Phantom ever. But, what you may not know is that this was the last song Tarja ever did with Nightwish. There was strife between her and the guys. She was the only person on stage who didn’t know she was about to be fired from the band immediately after this song.
I love "old" Nightwish's sound, their older albums just have some incredibly gorgeous songs. There's a lot from that middle zone with Anette, who many didn't like, that I really enjoyed. And Floor is just...my idol. Someday. I will not live in a tiny apartment and can dedicate myself to singing without neighbors.
Tarja Turunen is the band's original vocalist. Nightwish has 9 studio albums, 5 with Tarja, 2 with Anette and 2 with Floor, the current singer. Tarja was sick at this performance and was advised by the doctors not to sing, thats why you noticed her tired breathing. She had flue or something like that. I would like to suggest another great performance with Tarja. Please react to "Swanheart", recorded on the dvd "From wishes to eternity". Thank you!
@@wearehere8925 I see no difference. The original singer is the first vocalist of the band. Tuomas, Tarja and Empuu founded Nightwish. They are the beginning of everything. Tuomas had in mind to create the band and decided to call Tarja and Empuu. The three were friends from school.
Jukka (the drummer) suffers from chronic insomnia. He had lots of problems including headaches (as you saw in the video). It got so bad he had to stop performing and now Kai Hahto took his place. But Jukka is still in the band helping behind the scenes.
I agree 100% Well, Tarja to be more specific, to me Tarjas vocals + Marcos vocals + Tuomas' writing + the band is Nightwish. I feel that once you take any of that away it's not the same.
I know I'm incredibly late to this comment but...I must disagree....Tuomas IS Nightwish. Everything Nightwish embodies IS Tuomas' orchestration, lyrics, melodies, instrumentals, he is the powerhouse of that band. Losing tarja was awful, but they found Floor and are still epic. Losing Marco is awful, but they can find another powerful male vocalist and instrumentalist, and they will be epic. They ever lose Tuomas...and I truly believe Nightwish will never recover.
Nightwish is reaction gold. Next up MUST be Unleash The Archers (i.e: Awakening) Personal request though. Lumsk - I Trollehender (Norwegian Folk Metal) Keep it up!
She didn't run out of breath in the beginning. Interestingly, she paused then pointed to her head and sang"inside my mind"do that were can know the Phantom's in her head.
Tarja's the 1st singer of Nightwish, the tour was off Nightwishe's "once" album. I'd always like to say Tarja's 1 of the best singers of all time, sure, you have opera singers, usually more than 1 at a time, but Tarja is the only opera singer on that stage, runs around all night, headbangs and STILL hits her notes. This song was the fifth song in the concert.
the issue with this rendition of the song is that it's SO MUCH BETTER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE. It gives me "bdsm in a haunted mansion". Marko is a beast with that voice, Tarja is a seraphim
She told in an interview that she did the whole recital with an infection in her throat : / Great reaction. You shall try Slaying the dreamer from the same DVD :D
WOAH! That was fucking EPIC! I've never heard of this band nor the female singer... But I'm a huge Phantom fan and this exceeded my expectations. Really rad!
You asked what make a drummer (Jukka) he just crying coz this was a last concert of Tarja with Nightwish and the name of dvd delivered from this End of an Era
Great reaction! Thank you very much Ken Lavigne! Tarja Turunen was the original Nightwish vocalist for almost a decade, defining a big part of their sound with her classically infused vocal techniques which combined perfectly with Nightwish's inicial power metal and later symphonic metal sound, and also with Marco's vocals, as you noticed it was a perfect match in every way! The great thing is that Tarja has been having an amazing solo career in the last 15 years... Her voice is really high (her last note on this one is an Eb6), but also a full and really powerfull sound (and in her career she always keeps on experimenting new things with her vocals, including a haunting dark and lower register she can belt out), plus having this theatrical presence on stage... Tarja was sick as a dog during that performance. High fever and throwing up between songs. And still planted that presence, performance and that high note.
And this is why Tuomas wanted to die when Tarja left. However, that event gave birth to the master piece that is The Poet and the Pendulum and then to the wonderful version of the current Nightwish with QUEEN FLOOR JANSEN
@@Dark__Thoughts .. Tarja announced in early 2003 that she was going solo ( not to join another band for a better paycheck, and she had many documented offers) because she was no longer able to tolerate long tours, had serious creative differences with Tuomas's direction, sought more time for herself and to concentrate on a solo career on her terms ...Tuomas convinced her to stay a while longer, even to possibly record a 6th album... her terms were ... very short tours ( citing danger to vocal and overall health..a long-standing problem for many years), with more time for herself, better travel and hotel accommodations and decision to move to Argentina with her husband...she would be informed of tour schedules and fly in to discharge her duties....it worked for a while but then the band bulked at short tours, and her unwillingness to travel by 24-hour party bus (she suffered from constant allergies, flu and had sleeping trouble)...finally, after she busted her hump that last night working under ill health and against doctor's advice, they posted the infamous letter claiming that she has changed into a money hungry diva and that they can no longer work with her and her culturally divergent manager who corrupted her ...a very short while after Tuomas began to be overwhelmed with sentiments of anger, disapproval and outright disgust from fans, critics and industry...even, many of his friends turned on him...this, allegedly led to a deep depression and even his decision to scrap the band..though he was talked out of it...these feelings, he sustained are encompassed in the poet and pendulum
The Islander is absolutely a must do, but he’s only done 3 Nightwish songs so far and I feel like that will be better appreciated a little further along his journey 🙂
If you want to listen more Tarja's chest voice, you should listen something from her solo career. Please react song "Supremacy" (Muse cover) live version from Woodstock 2016. And if you want listet another vocal beast, please react japanese artist Kokia and her song "Il Mare Dei Suoni" live version from 2012, she is amazing, really amazing, she has big vocal range and control, also amazing technique. I have seen Phantom a few time and honestly I dislike it. And here we have Tarja and Marko.... and I absolutely love it! Let me name it straightforward... the "magic" of Marko is 100% masculine "energy" present + strong gritty voice + his facial expressions. He would make a terrible Phantom, because..... well.... Phantom is a creep and a psycho, who kidnapped that poor Christine, and now we hope someone will save her. Now... if we hired Marko as Phantom, we would have a waaaaay different situation, because actually.... come on.... every woman (including voice coaches and pro opera singers reacting to this video) have the same reaction... heheheh.... "If that Marko Phantom kidnaps me, NEVER SAVE ME.EVER." LOL. I think even men can sense that....something..... I don't know how to name it..... in this song he is just intimidating in that positive way. Jokes apart, but yeah... his masculine energy is so incredibly present here, that basically you suddenly kind of see, what not only pop singers, but also opera singers lack. It's that wild , overwhelming, hypnotizing masculinity. I don't comment Tarja's performance, because she is extremely talented and obviously trained to sign the way she sings. Fantastic. It's a magical combo of 100% masculine and 100% feminine energy in one song. And we have this WOW effect.
Great reaction Ken !! You should listen to other of the great symphonic metal bands Epica "Cry for the moon" the studio version. Greetings from Argentina!!
Please can you hit the left arrow after you pause to take it back 5 seconds? When you paused during Marco's "SING MY ANGEL OF MUSIC", it really killed my song boner
You mentioned Jukka (the drummer) with his head down there at the start... someone mentioned in the comments for another song from this show, that he was suffering a migrane or tension headache of some sort. In that song (their cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes, Marko vocals) you see Jukka with his head down a couple of times, and at one point Tuomas gives Emppu a look and a little jerk of his head as if to say, "Go see if he's okay." Emppu does the solo, then the next you see him, he's jumping back off the drum riser. As far as Tarja's breathing, it might have been more pronounced than usual due to her illness, but she breathed like that all the time. You can see and hear her doing it in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CwED4C5FJuo.html the official video for Over the Hills and Far Away. There is a duet of sarah brighton and antionio banderas of this song that si really charming since he paces around her like a lion and has a very charming accent.
Nightwish was from one of my music depth discovery periods with more metal styles and specially progressive genre... Dream Theater is one of those experiences and I'm glad I've been able to listen to such great music that otherwise would never find on radio or tv or wtv
In that same concert, she's got a yellow microphone for her yellow dress, a red mic for her red dress, a white mic for her white dress and a black mic for her black dress...
High Hopes is a must and a perfect continuity piece for this song. Marco's solo piece from the same concert. Entertaining reaction with new insight to technical aspect, thanks!
The Phantom was originally going to be performed by a rock singer, actually, which is one of the reasons why rock works so well as a genre for this song. The even did a rock-style version of this song as a promo for the musical. But then they changed gears completely and chose Michael Crawford, and his performance was very different, but also what 90% of his successors have tried to emulate in their own performances since the musical as a whole was just such a revolution in the musical world.
Tarja had a throat infection and a fever that day (went on against doctor's advice to avoid disappointing fans)...the drummer is constantly moved by Tarja's voice...same as in the end of "sleeping sun" from same concert....her dark soprano voice won them fame
@@nicod1361 ... her slight breathing difficulty was the result of the throat infection that night...how many of her 9 years worth of spectacular deliveries have you seen..obviously very few...she took them to great heights and originated the entire genre by her vocal prowess
It's remarkable that the band was able to come up with 2 singers as fantastic as Tarja and Floor. Personally I feel Floor was a bit better for this style of music because Tarja is more a pure opera singer while Floor can move seamlessly between an operatic and Rock style voice. Floor is also has a more dominating visual presence.
Tarja's sound is what made Nightwist so different from others. The classical singer voice singing heavy. Floor is a metal singer, good but she doesn't have the classic Nightwish sound.
This is a great version, but my personal favorite is with Floor Jansen and Henk Poort on the TV show Beste Zangers. Henk was the Dutch Phantom for quite a while, and Floor's idol growing up. They have some amazing chemistry. Give it a listen. Thank you for reacting to this one too. Nicely done Sir.
Tarja is the 1st vocalist. I fell in love with Nightwish during her reign. Disappoinment was through the roof when they introduced Anette as their 2nd vocalist. Floor Jansen brought me back to Nightwish, since she can actually sing songs written to Tarja and do them better.
That depends on what style of singing sounds right to your ears on those older songs. Yes Floor can sing them wonderfully, but it often changes the whole feel of the song. The soaring operatic style fits the old music so well to me vs. belting.
That's why they rewrite Sleeping Sun so Floor could handle it.😜 Otherwise she couldn't. And btw I don't like the new version. Although Anette songs became bearable with Floor.
@@GhostDrummer forgetting that Tuomas & the band had asked Floor to take over right after Tarja but she could not accept, so after many auditions settled on Anette
