It is extremely painful to hear about the man who hung himself. However, the culture shock of being brought from rural Ethiopia to Israel must have been extreme. His daughter said he had been a “dignified” person, but likely none of his skills were very valuable in Israel and that would be a catastrophic blow to anyone’s self confidence and dignity. It is simple human nature. More should probably have been done to help people like him, but in reality some people would have been crushed in the initial generation of immigrants no matter how much help was offered. It is why some immigrants return to their countries-the change is too great and the personal price too high. In the case of Ethiopian Jews, there really wasn’t, and still isn’t, a country to return to. The sentiments here coming from lovely people in Ethiopia are heartwarming. However, Ethiopian Jews didn’t leave because they were showered in love. They were oppressed for centuries by Ethiopian Christians to the extent that many felt the need to convert. This is part of what is creating muddying matters over whether Israel has truly taken in the entire Jewish community or if more remain.

I felt sad and worse off when I heard though that when massive blood was needed by Israeli Govt because of some reasons (this has been long ago in the late '90s or so, Ethiopian Jewish like any other Israeli Citizens took the call to donate blood , theirs was taken but dumped! Heart breaking story which left bad scar on all ETHIOPIANS all over the WORLD.
What is the whole story. Why was it dumped? Once, I wanted to donate blood, but I have been less than 5 years in America and I’m from Eastern Europe. The rule was that because of mad cow disease, they didn’t take blood from people who traveled to Europe within last 5 years! So, they didn’t take my blood.
