I love how you are able to hear all Opeth’s journey in one song, it sounds like the peak of their music, like the fruit of 30 years of experimentation, it sounds freaking ominous ☠️
I love the way the will is basically read out in death metal growls, implying father is a monster or at the very least a bit of a git. This is really good music
I've been listening to this daily since it came out, the growls!!! I am so excited to listen to the album in its entirety. Concept albums with interconnected songs are so badass, Meshuggah's Catch 33 and Thordendal's Special Defects grips me the same way!
@@Zyborggian Same ballpark, yes. I’m happy he’s retained as much as he has, as I highly doubt his original technique was safe. Either that, or he started over exerting himself once he got in-ear monitors. Regardless, he did hurt his voice a lot, and I’m happy it’s recovered the way it has.
With all due respect to Axe, but Opeth lost a LOT with the exit of Lopez. Waltteri seems to have brought back the type of drumming that perfectly suites Opeth. I'm very excited
@@IcaroMPA I would argue that Waltteri has brought some Porcupine Tree / Gavin Harrison to Opeth. And as a fan of PT/SW, I'm all for that! (I had to triple check that SW had nothing to do with this song/album when I first heard the drums come in. ;D)
Every time i hear this song i love it more. There is Oldpeth, there is Newpeth and there is Rock Opera feel to it now. If the feel of this song is a showcase of the rest of the album, i shall call this new Opeth, from now on, Operath!
@@jericosha2842 it's probably a mixture of me being autistic and also a big Opeth fan, but I was teary when this just came out, the sheer novelty and awesomeness of the track did that
I am expecting the album to be a masterpiece and here's why: I've listened to §1 almost non-stop since its release and it has become my favorite Opeth track since at least Harlequin Forest. I may actually enjoy §1 more than any single track on Ghost Reveries or even Blackwater Park (crazy, I know). §1 is a beautifully sinister-sounding piece of music, expertly crafted to be just that. The intervals performed by guitars and vocals are quite uncommon, empty-sounding, as they jump from note to note without a minor or major interval in sight (with a few exceptions). To my ears and mind, it feels ethereal, ghostly. It feels like an old abandoned mansion looks, if that makes sense. The sliding-guitar notes and slowed-down "draped in death" spoken word parts add to the macabre atmosphere. The growls are essential as well, not because Opeth's music needs growls to be good, but because this specific track truly benefits from having them. The absolute icing on this cake are the low cleans around 3:20 that are reminiscent of Eric Clayton from Savior Machine. Clayton sang with Mikael on the Ayreon album The Human Equation. Anyway, this song is completely brilliant.
Åkerfeldt has become hypocritical. Previously, he always said that since 1995 he had completely lost interest in death metal, he no longer likes to growl. And now that the audience has a great demand for extreme music. He abandoned his principles for monetary gain.
@@Derzak179 it's not AI Generated, at least I don't think it is. If you hire a company (hard-media) full of professionals to make you a video AI is out of the question.
It 100% is, the candles meld with each other in no defined shape just like in most AI generated video with image prompts. The rest of the video features a ton of obvious AI as well, you can see it in how unnaturally the images warp. Like in 2:38 for example, where most people holding the umbrellas simultaneously have both hands in their pockets while the umbrellas just float in the air or in 2:49 where the fourth man just melds into the fifth and vanishes. As for whether professionals should be using AI, I agree, they shouldn't. Problem is most industries are already embracing this shit because you can throw together a video like this with no cost and call it a day and most people won't notice. It's all about the money.

@@FELTSZ I respectfully disagree. First off, if this was a money grab he would be writing easily accessible songs....this is not mainstream in any way. The whole album is prog. Weird and amazing prog. And he and he has said this album has a lot going on and may take some time to unpack. As for him doing growls again....people change. Our tastes change and he is no different. He saw that this music required a more sinister voice at times. I do not believe for a second that Mikael abandoned his principles for monetary gain. Peace!
@@BossDrSample I think we're gonna have to get used a lot of these record company made "visualiser" type videos leaning on it tbh and it reads more "editor on a deadline who used all the stock archive footage, album key art and photos at the start". But yeah, some of those "spoopy skeletons, painted illustration, 4k, atmospheric, metal, demon, goth, cool" images mixed in feel really cheap and decisively not Opeth - who always put a lot of care into the graphics and artwork. Disappointing from the label, but I'm not gonna worry until we start seeing it on T-shirts or album covers.
Yeah post Watershed makes a lot of sense. I never really got the hate for later Opeth though? Tbh Pale Communion is my second favourite album after Blackwater Park. But what’s cool about them is whether they’re doing straight-up death metal or proggy fusion-rock you can still always tell it’s Opeth. Mark of a great band
@@lukedoyle2770 For myself and I'm sure a lot of people, it wasn't hate really. I still like alot of their most recent stuff, its just maybe too big of a leap in sound and style.
This is a breath of fresh air to me after so many years, albums, and songs that have been written/released with no gutteral vocals. It brings earlier albums to mind and I'm here for it.
The song is very consistent in its tone and character through all its variation. Sometimes Opeth songs feels lite twenty completely different songs mashed together - which is not necessary a bad thing. But §1 is really one song and I like that.
This is so fucking good. I feel this album has the potential to become another landmark album like Blackwater Park. Something about the vibe and concept and darkness and element of surprise is so exciting.
Listened to all of blackwater park the other day and what this album really needs are parts like the section before the piano on leper affinity or that bridge in bleak.
I like the part when the clock stops on the Mellotron part, like if the "suspect" of the testament finally died, and than a FUKIN MAJOR CHORD!!!! i guess the heirs were happy about it haha
Opeth have always been a very unique and incredible band with a sound of their own. Very excited to hear the rest of the album. Bringing back the times of Ghost Reveries. Excellent work gentleman.
I love every Opeth album because each one is different. 5 years since the last one was a long wait, but it will be worth it. Also, I've got tickets to their show in Atlanta in Oct. Its gonna be awesome!
Although I was never a dedicated Opeth fan, they always played very good music. But they totally got me with this song. A dark deranged ghostly musty sound of death. Excellent work!!! Thanks. 😁🎸🤟
Banger song, banger prod, banger riffs, banger lyrics, banger growls, shity cliché IA made lyrics video. This thing is deeper than what I just saw on screen.
Mikael Akerfeldt is growling again...? MOFOS growling AGAIN? brah..... 😍💦💦💦🤤 I swear I read an interview in a Metal Hammer or Decibel issue months after the release of Watershed saying that he was departing from that kind of vocals for any new upcoming albums, saying that it fitted at that point in his life but not anymore, suggesting he wasn't ever returning to the beloved iconic Opeth sound. but then they release this...This track takes me back, can't wait to see them live! I haven't been this hype for a metal album release in years! 🤘🤘
Insane track! Awesome! I loved In Cauda Venenum (Swedish) but this track reminds me of the past but pushed it to the max!. Pale Communion combined with In Cauda Venenum Combined with Watershed/Blackwater Park.
I'm excited ( ok, honestly...pre-ordered) to listen the whole new album. I appreciate, that Mikael growls again, and we hear a bit of dominance, in their guitar work, it's truly awesome! Of course, Opeth won't deliver a clone of Morningrise or Blackwater park. For sure, i'll expect a concept album, musically concepted near Watershed. Finally, i'm peaceful with Mikael's vintage-prog journey, from Heritage to In cauda venenum- but hopefully the metal basics becomes true...
