2016 marks the monumental return of one of heavy rock’s most unique, revered and fearless bands of the last three decades, Opeth. Over the years, the experimental, prog veterans have continuously reinvented themselves, pushing the boundaries of their craft and expectations of fans and critics alike.
OPETH’s new album, Sorceress, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band’s imprint label Moderbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album’s opener 'Persephone' to 'The Wilde Flowers' and 'Strange Brew' to the album’s counterpart title tracks 'Sorceress' and 'Sorceress II', OPETH’s twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colors mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly.
Sorceress Track List:
1. Persephone
2. Sorceress
3. The Wilde Flowers
4. Will O The Wisp
5. Chrysalis
6. Sorceress 2
7. The Seventh Sojourn
8. Strange Brew
9. A Fleeting Glance
10. Era
11. Persephone (Slight Return)
”The new album "Sorceress" is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. ”Sorceress” is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!? It’s different! It’s extremely diverse. And if I may say so myself, extremely good. I feel the right to say that since I like to think I know this band better than anyone on the planet. Also, I always manage to detach myself from the record and listen as a fan. It’s a fine little record. My favorite in our discography right now. Of course. That’s how it should be, right? It’s both fresh and old, both progressive and rehashed. Heavy and calm. Just the way we like it. Hopefully there’ll be others around the globe sharing this opinion. It was a joy to make it. A fucking joy to record it, and a sheer joy listening to it. So there you have it!”
For Sorceress, OPETH returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from Queen, Rush and Judas Priest, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The band spent 12 days recording at the countryside venue among its serene and inspiring surroundings. The result is nothing short of a powerful and intriguing record that will add yet another layer to the band’s celebrated career.

When Watershed came out. I took my then-gf to go see them. I had only played her the softer Opeth because she was metal but she was 5-FingerDP-metal... Opeth opened with Deliverance. Her eyes went from normal to hubcap size in less than a second with her mouth agape. She couldn't believe it was the same band. 2010 where have you gone?....

Heritage and and Pale Communion had a very clear 70's feel and texture in the sound, but this feel modern, and still maintaining the core elements os the last two albums and the dark and heavy sound of the death metal era. Loving this so far.

@MrJordwalk 8 лет назад
OsightblinderO No they don't, what the fuck are you talking about. I've seen them live 3 times over the past three years, and they played one or more songs from Ghost Reveries at each show. If they hated it, then explain why they played it live in its entirety during their 25th Anniversary Tour last October. I don't know why it was marketed as a tour because it was only show, but I was at that show and they CELEBRATED the album because it was also the album's 10th Anniv. They also played "The Grand Conjuration" when I saw them at Wacken last year, and "Ghost Of Perdition", "Atonement" and "Reverie" when I saw them in Boulder, Colorado in 2013.

There are still fans out there that just won't accept the current direction Opeth are doing now, they'd rather see them repeat Blackwater Park (Or My Arms, Your Hearse, whatever) over and over again. Honestly, I'd rather have a band do different things than just repeat the same classic album over and over again (Even though I listen to KMFDM). It makes the band more interesting when they venture into different artistic direction...

It's not the 'accepting' part, it's the music that's not that good anymore. Damnation is a pretty well revered album with no growls or death metal things, but it sounded like Opeth, sounded like a unique take on the 70's rock and the songs were just well written. This is an incoherent mess. This come from a 3 decade 70's prog rock fan.
@Thedarkerhalf1
@Thedarkerhalf1 8 лет назад
With due respect, it just really comes down to opinion. It's debatable. I do understand the fanbase is divided with this current direction. But if they did Ghost Reveries part 3 I would've got sick of them. personally. I actually did like Heritage when it came out because it was something I didn't expect from them. And I stil play the album from time to time. But that's just my opinion. And my impression how the fans reacted when it came out . But since you're more prog than I am, what's your recommendation of 70's prog albums?

My first exposure to Opeth was Advent, Deliverance and Ghost of Perdition, so obviously I love their metal works, but you can't deny that there is magic in the last 3 albums. The Devil's Orchard and Nepenthe are what I think to be some of the best they've ever done. Eternal Rains Will Come and Moon Above, Sun Below, are some of the best modern compositions I've ever heard, the same can be said for the entirety of Pale Communion. Sorceress (The album) contains some of the most haunting and beautiful melodies and brutal keys/Hammond I've ever heard, and I've listened to a lot of 70s prog, and everybody says Opeth is just ripping off 70s prog, I've NEVER heard a song that sounded like Devil's Orchard or Sorceress (The Song)

I hate the fact that so many people are hating on this track. If you're not a fan of the last few Opeth records, that's fine. Then go back and listen to their old stuff. Some bands are like that. But you don't need to bitch and moan about how they aren't "metal" anymore. Opeth is a Prog band. Prog can be heavy and brutal, but also can be calm and soothing. I think they've always done a good job of maintaining a happy medium between the two. If you don't like the track then move along. I like it and can not wait for the album to drop in Sept!

Absolutely tremendous. Reviews will echo that notion (mine included) and our goal should be to share this to the ends of the earth. In a way, the heavy riffing interwoven with those fantastic cleans rings like a compromise. What's even more impressive about that is no such goal was present, instead just being the natural intrepid exploration of a band. This is the mature glow of a band that explored their Earth, then decided to pursue sonic space travel to find new worlds.

I'm neither pro-growls or anti-growl. I am however, pro-progressive anything. I'm glad Opeth decided to release the official version of this track, cause the guitars in this other video sounded fuzzy at the bottom. Like overly fuzzy. This could very well be the authors intent, or it was just the audio quality in the other video. (not yours :P) I digress. I have found myself replaying this track over and over now, and it's slowly growing on me. It's sure heavy, there's obvious talent + chops, and character. Huge sound. In a good way. AND I have yet to even read the lyrics, which is why I came here in the first place. lol

I have not heard this new stuff, but i'm not upset with Opeth changing their music. They are just being artists making the shit they like to play. If you want growl then go listen to the albums with growl. I've been listening to black water park again for a few days now and I'm still surprised at how great that album was. I guess my point is that you cannot ask for another blackwater park or ghost reveries or orchid or any of the older album because they have already done those. Go listen to what you like, and be grateful Opeth created them. If the new music is what the band want to play, then lets support them. I'd rather that they are playing the music they enjoy, than them hating playing shit they dont want to play anymore.

This is friggin awesome. Their 90’s shit is friggin awesome. Animals as leaders is awesome. Black tongue also. Cornelius rock. De staat are groove monster minimalists. Billain and Culprate have a sound design that’ll knock you for 6. NOISIA provide consistently for 20 years. Jimi Hendrix is a heavy influence on distorted guitar and one of the best to do it for the time and still. Antoine dufour is just as much a virtuoso as Vai and Van Halen, or malmsteen if you like your scales. Car bomb bring a whole new level to experimentation within metal. A nod to Frederick thordendal’s special defects era. Subjective listening as usual. Opeth rock man. This new sludgy doomish stuff is killer. Opinions :)

I realize this track has garnered some what of a mixed reaction from fans, but that's normal at this point in Opeth's career. Almost everything they do now gets a lot of mindless bashing. (Not saying it doesn't get constructive criticism either, but there is a lot of unfair treatment in this as well) Out of the past 3 albums that have been different (including this one), my hopes are highest for this one. The fact that Opeth can transition from such a groovy keyboard intro to a similarly groovy yet crushing, chuggy riff is what made them strong from the very beginning. Whether it be acoustics, keyboards, or distortion, they're solid and always will be. This song, to me, feels more energetic and lively than, well, ANYTHING on Heritage or Pale Communion. While they were both fantastic albums, they at times, felt dull. The riffs in this track are simple, yet effective. The fact that they're simple makes some people think they're boring, but for me, it's not boring. It's a banger.
@ganondorfchampin
@ganondorfchampin 8 лет назад
I found Cusp of Eternity and The Devil's Orchard both sounded much more lively than this song, which sounds flat. I do have high hopes for this album (if nothing else I love the cover art :P), but I've found this song to be a disappointment. I completely disagree with your assent of the riffs in this song, they are so dull.
@lugn.9632

Could be also because of the mix, on this video the song doesn't have the harmonics it has on other versions I came across.
@hazardousjazzgasm129
@hazardousjazzgasm129 8 лет назад
I don't think the riffs are boring because they're simple. Everything Nick Drake writes is very simple yet very harmonic and beautiful. The riffs in this song are boring because it's part typical open-chord chugga nonsense that's been done to death for decades. Since when was Opeth supposed to be about switching to a new genre, but contributing absolutely nothing to said genre?
@ganondorfchampin
@ganondorfchampin 8 лет назад
+Lug N. So there are other videos of this song with better mixes? Do tell.
@exoticeagle9562
@exoticeagle9562 8 лет назад
+ganondorfchampin I really don't see how Cusp of Eternity's chuggy riff is any different from this. Alright, Cusp DOES HAVE a bit more emotion and a bit more density. I can easily hear that. But it's still a very simple track, much like this one. I imagine Cusp, when it first hit RU-vid, got a lot of the same comments. "Boring. Dull", etc etc. Now people praise it to death. In a few years, this track might be looked back on and enjoyed. Because right now, it's new, and right after listening to classic Opeth, sure, it may sound boring and distasteful (if that's even a word xD). But after multiple listens, I mean MULTIPLE, there's a greater chance that it will be enjoyed.

They can still be heavy without needing the death metal and after some extensive prog explorations the last couple albums, its just what the doctor ordered. Stop blaming the lack of growls. that isn't the problem at all. All of Damnation, Harvest, Porcelain Heart, Burden, Coil... All clean singing, but fantastic vocal melodies & songwriting. This song, like Cusp of Eternity, is basically mostly one riff with some dressing. The vocal melodies follow the riff exactly which is boring. If you listen to Opeth's older clean material, the vocal melodies really compliment the guitar rather than follow it. There's other aspects too, but that's a big one. The Devil's Orchard has these elements which is why I like it a lot, but most of the last 2 albums lack this.

"Sorceress" is one of my favorite OPETH songs as it sounds really 70s proggy with that fusion jazz intro riff arrangement, and then you have these 90s sounding alternative metal choruses and chugga-chugga parts, perfectly balanced. It's like a compilation of heavy prog, epic, spanning for decades, paying tribute to its jazz roots. Excellent song!

For me, the reason why it grows on some of us older fans who weren't too keen on it. The metal-chugga-chug groove. Opeth's older catalogue had some bangers that have a sick groove, and I think subliminally it hooks in. Opeth's older stuff while progressive, it did not go crazy with the 'Jazz' and prog. They made sure they had hooks that you can bang to. The new stuff not so much. The newer sound is more focused on the progressive influences, so hooks and grooves take the backseat for more crazy keyboards and Jazzy instead of Blues guitar solos. I think the easiest way to explain it is Old Opeth - Blues and Grooves and Metal. New Opeth - Jazz, experimental, hard to follow if not into super progressive 70's rock. For me this song just brings back a few elements I miss from Oldpeth. Newpeth is still great don't get me wrong, it just doesn't hit the same spots.

Also anyone else feel this? - Old Opeth clean vocal style - Eric Clapton-ish. New Opeth clean vocals - Jethro Tull-ish.

I hated their direction on the last 2 albums for a while, but I can honestly say "I get it now". This album is very, very good. I can't stop listening to it. And now I'm going back to Heritage and Pale Communion, and it's almost like I'm listening to it with a different lens so to speak.

Space is the first word that comes in my mind to describe the direction taken by Opeth but it's simply authentic and original. A less melodic than older albums with growls but with several listening, I really appreciate what I hear!

this was a fantastic album. some parts reminded me of my favorite prog artists, some of avante garde artists, some of classic rock, and some parts where completely original and innovative. beautiful and unlikely array of instruments on this album. love it! my new fav opeth album

It's such a shame because I grew up listening to Opeth and have considered myself a great fan of their music. I'm glad to see that a lot of people liked it but this track is really dissapointing for me. I like guttural and clean voice all the same, but it's the harmonies, the riffs and just the soulless sounds that really get to me. What was once a unique band seems to just be writting music for sake of it, without any effort.

Did you read the interview? mike said he was asked to write a record in 6 months. they are going to get fucked just like Metallica. This is not opeth. not asking for heavy old songs but the class they had until damnation. They have lost the soul.

Agreed. I've barely spun post-D&D albums more than a couple of times, it's been extremely disappointing. GR for me showed extremely messy songwriting and the clear beginning of degradation. I get that bands change, thats cool. But not when the change ISN'T working well. I dare say that the fans who are still pleased are the ones with low expectations and standards quite frankly. I totally agree that the atmosphere has gone. Even with this latest song, which DOES sound awesome, it still seems to miss atmosphere. I think Akerfeldt is genius, we all know he is. But there's some magic that's just GONE. Is it because we have no Lopez for example? Is THAT when the magic left Opeth?

I guess its the "catchy" song of the album and for that reason is more than I expected.I can still hear the creativity and talent of Akerfeldt even through this kind of lets say different music direction of Opeth and that all that matters to me.Hail Opeth

Their last two albums were total prog rock in the style of Traffic or King Crimson. I don't we should be surprised by heavy prog rock at this point. It's obvious that Mike can't keep the death vocals going forever. It seems like prog is really his passion.
@jft4820
@jft4820 8 лет назад
I've always maintained that death metal is one of the best places for musicians to show off all they can do. The speed and complexity at which most instruments play is crazy. But to be unique in death metal you have to be creative. At least Opeth is still being creative, but they don't get many opportunities to show off.

Funny thing is that Mikael the other day during an interview said that he used the jazz intro to furstrate the listeners (by incorporating in the music different-not old Opeth-elements) and that he finds the riff to be so basic. Imagine what Mikael can do if he decides to please the fans...how can you not love this man, he's nuts
