I do not own this music and vid. It is the bonus dvd from Ghost Reveries. So, if you like, please buy it. Recorded at Fascination Street Studios, 2005.
Idk why the best singers seem to be that way but they are. My friend is a singer and is constantly shutting on himself thinking he sucks but the guys pretty damn good. He loves Opeth I wouldn’t say he’s in Mikael’s level but he’s got the same feelings to his voice and same self depreciation.
I can't believe there's another Martin, but he goes by the name of "Axe". And Lopez, he's part of the band Soen right now. You can check out Soen if you want. Good thing Mendez is the other Martin that still plays for Opeth.
"There's not many bands who can continue to put out quality albums the way that we do." Mike is unburdened by things like humility. Never change, you awesome dude you.
@@israelthacker8568 Beyond the sickness, one of the main reasons Lopez left was because Mike basically doesn't let anybody write the music for Opeth. That hasn't changed, so unless Lopez is feeling nostalgic, there is little motivation for him to leave Soen.
"I never wanna find myself in the position I write for the purpose of doing a record. I wanna write for the purpose of coming up with something extraordinary." M. Akerfeldt
THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM EVER WRITTEN. when i first watched this, after my good friend suggested it to me, right after it was released, it opened my eyes and ears up to a whole new level of musicianship. it made my taste what it is today.
Saw them play this album in its entirety couple of days ago in Norway. Amazing experience, one of their best albums for sure together with My arms Your hearse, Blackwater Park and Still Life!
The new Opeth albums without Lopez to me is what I'd describe as Porcupine Tree without Gavin Harrison, I still miss him but to be honest as time went by with multiple lineup changes their new style and sound kinda grew on me and I think the part of the reason is because no matter what people say, to me Mikael is the soul of Opeth and he's been consistently implementing his unique song writing skills and bringing new things to the table with each and every new album, which certain bands and artists of this era really fail to do. Also people should stop mocking about his growls because he's not the Mikael from 20 years ago people change with age and we should all be thankful that we got to enjoy such a wide catalogue of music with different styles, structures and flavours of sounds and songs from a single band which is really some next level shit.
I remember there was a forum on MySpace where a bunch of music nerds like myself would argue about music. My first post was a question…”who’s better, Metallica or Iron Maiden?”. A very 18 year old question and definitely sparked an argument. “What a stupid question” etc. I digress. This is where I discovered Opeth. I bought this album which came with this DVD. Ahh MySpace…
Bought this album randomly at fye and holy shit did ot grow on me.. dont know why but it ended up becoming my all time favorite. Nothing compares to it
He can't really, anymore. Years of Opeth, plus doing the full-time death metal growl for Bloodbath for a few years. That, and I believe he's a smoker. Those things + age tend to wreak havoc on your voice.
Now is the time to seize on Mike and let him know that although he abandoned a darker, less prog sound with Heritage we will still welcome the band with some less widdly, self indulgent toss. Axe is gone, I can't help feeling that the momentarily boon in retro prog that the band switched to will subside and all the the metalheads that stuck around all the way to Watershed would be glad of something like an evolution of the 'old' Opeth we love
They keyboards on GR are fantastic and add to the album. They aren't overbearing, scatty or an assault on the ears. That's exactly what the keys have been since PC. Too much front-centre and focus on them. Too many widdly, pointless, meaningless passages that seem to be put in a song just for the sake of it.
Nowadays (or for the past 15 years really), if you listen to live renditions of older Opeth songs, they're drenched in keyboards for no reason other than that the keyboardist is there and has a keyboard in front of him. Just because you can technically add keyboards to a song like Wreath and give it more 'fullness', it doesn't mean you should. See also S&M by Metallica and the mostly pointless addition of strings and horns to songs that weren't written with that stuff in mind. It reminds me of a chef grabbing every bit of seasoning he sees just because it's available. Stick to the recipe please.
Either way... I think this album was Lopez at the top of his game.. The drumming is inhuman! In fact, this was the best line-up of the band.. and in terms of musicianship, this album is out of this world.. Mike's right when he said that they consistently put out quality records.. But Ghost Reveries was Opeth at their peak.. The single most haunting, yet beautiful FLAWLESS masterpiece from one of the most special bands this world is likely to ever see!
That's not what "overproduced" means. Overproduced means that the producer has had too much input on the sound and production of the album. See: Bob Rock. "Ghost Reveries" is not overproduced. It is finely crafted. There's a difference.
1:10. Damn, man. I love Mikael, and for everything he's given us over the years. He's a genius. Perhaps he knows this and it comes across as arrogance. To blanketly say all other bands have put out crap, but Opeth haven't. C'mon bro. Hilarious that since PC he's put out three crap albums in a row. I say he because let's be honest, it's 100% his decision, direction, and band.
JoRdOguitarman1 The melodies have nothing to do with each other and the rythms do neither. The drums are all over the place, the new drummer adds ghost notes to the snare drum all the time even though there's no need for it.
I particularly don't like modesty as well, while i do think that you need to be humble, modesty is not necessary... But i can agree that opeth has only done f**ng awesome albums, my personal favorite is Blackwater park, but for example, i think heritage (being the most recent one) is an amazing album as well =) They are good, and Akerfeldt is beyond good and apparently he still has tons of creativity, fortunately =D
that is a valid point, but if he had a certain sound in his head for the album-i don't think he was going to settle for something that sounded 100% bare & sacrifice accomplishing putting his thoughts onto the record.
I used to not be able to stand death metal vox either, but the true genius of Opeth's 'golden era' lies in the shifting contrasts of the growls to clean vocals in a song. Which is one of the reasons why the later albums don't measure up, that contrast is largely gone. You may never get used to them, but you're missing out on what makes classic-era Opeth classic.
Oh yeah man, it is the source of some controversy and discontent. From the album HERITAGE on up is clean vocals. I have only been into these guys for about a year, but I am loving all of their music, from every era and line up. Some of the older fans are not that appreciative of the line up/ stylistic changes that have taken place. Eye if the beholder and all that...
you answered it...PEOPLE take this as...its people who are to blame not spiritual texts..most of the christians that i know are not out killing or doing anything like what you described...and you know that as well..anger always comes from lack of understanding...people dont like to think for themselves..they like to have everything deciphered for them-this is the problem..not the texts themselves
mrknorke I think that is probably a big part of it. Metal is definitely my preferred genre. But Heritage also seems less cohesive to me than Ghost Reveries or Still Life, which are epic stories as well as musical pieces of Art. Heritage, to me, is more a jazz progressive experiment. What I seek in music is guitar metal newness. Heritage obviously fails to deliver that :(
Dan Goldsmith For me, it's kinda different. I always loved Metal, and i was very sceptical about Heritage at first. I was really disappointed and also a bit angry when i first heard it. But now, as i've listened to it numerous times, i really like it. I would even say, i love it. It's definetly a very very different style of music, and i never was into this, but now i would say Heritage as a whole is the most interresting and amazing album i've heard in the last 5 years. Maybe not my favourite Opeth album, but on it's own it's a masterpiece.
miffmaff I'll give it another listen from start to finish. Even though I don't own a copy of it, it is probably better than some of the crap on my cd rack :)
Implying there's no great ideas on heritage, just because it's not filled with death metal vocals and type writer sounding kick drums doesn't mean it's not great.
Since then, Lopez, Lindgren and Weiberg have left. Axenrot replaced Lopez, but I can't remember who replaced Weiberg. Frederik Akersson replaced Lindgren.
a person with integrity..whether they be christian or not is free to decide for themselves..whatever mr akerfeldt wants to believe is up to him..it matters not to me..i dont need to follow mr akerfeldt because i can think for myself..you should try doing the same
8:45, what model is that PRS guitar? There's too many PRS models I saw Michael playing a purple coloured one in a video that looks great. Are they just custom 22 and 24 models?
P.S. Mr. Akerfeldt himself does not think highly of religion, and has proclaimed that he indeed believes that God is dead. So if you want to get all serious about it, there you go. A Christian may not like that so much, thereby turning them off of Opeth.
I love love love Opeth, and love Mikael's clean, singing voice. I despise the growling and it ruins any song in my opinion. I can tolerate a little, but would rather skip past those parts. LOL. Just my taste.
You should really dig their new album Pale Communion that's out in a few days then.... all clean vocals and its similar to Heritage but an even stronger record with a more cohesive collection of songs imo
Janners , don't give up. I used to dislike growls, but Opeth taught me to enjoy it, if done correctly. It's an aquired taste, and one great song to help that transition along is The Drapery Falls. Like the first five minutes or so is growl-free and awesome, but when the growls enter - combined with a really powerful riff - it hits you like a sledgehammer, in a great fucking way. The growls make that section far better than otherwise. But you can't skip the first five minutes, that's an essential build-up.
Dialogue with the Stars Well not really. It's more Opeth's problem as they're the ones responsible for it being amazing only in its lack of good songwriting.
See, here's what you seemed to have missed. The original post was: "Who could dislike this?" Saying "A Christian" is not bigoted; it's a completely legitimate suggestion. A Christian could dislike as much as anybody else. Now, if the original statement was: "Who would dislike this?" and I said "A Christian," then you'd have a point here somewhere in all this rambling of me singling out an entire cult of people and their chosen man-made deity. Sorry, but your fervent discord here is unjustified.
What does that mean? I never understood that term "over-produced'. It sounds like something people say to make themselves feel smart, or sound smart. I don't get it.
