allmusic likes their slow songs, album picks top five opeth songs are bleak blackwater park ghost reveries grand conjuration demon of the fall ... hm when
i love how a) Opeth can repeat the same riff for a very long time without it wearing out, like the intro riff, b) they've mixed the audience mics so low during the almost silent acoustic parts so it feels like the whole hall is quiet and appreciating the music and c) how Opeth can produce a million amazing riffs and put them in one song, yet still never run out of riffs.
Personally something I dont like bout Mikael is he sometimes repeats too much an idea before getting to another one and sometimes i could get a little bored. Just my opinion. And this is somethinf that happens in some songs, not all of them. Of course the riffs are fucking great dont get me wrong!
Ren yeah, I've definitely found that to be a weakness (my opinion) in his songwriting. Especially on Ghost Reveries, even though it's one of my favorite albums. He usually does it tastfully, though.
And that is why Akerfeldt is my favorite guitarist of all time. He is the modern riff GOD, the Steve Vai of metal when it comes to sexy licks(Windowpane and Face of Melinda come to mind instantly; hours of wealth, Isolation Years, Atonoment, etc also NAIL this), solos and tear jerking emotion and the songwriting he does to put it all together is top tier second to absolutely none. To top it all off, he is one of the best and most recognisable vocalists in metal(his cleans are unbeatable for this exact grim melancholic music Opeth produces, not to mention his growls used to be the highest standard for any metal vocalist) and Martin Lopez is also one of the best drummers in the genre, making Opeth the magnum opus of what the genre is capable of delivering! Oh, not to mention he is basically a stand up comedian on stage.
MAYH, Still Life and Blackwater Park are out of this world for sure! Absolute masterpieces! I enjoy older Opeth as well. But I firmly believe that Opeth died when Peter and Martin left. New Opeth, especially Heritage and Pale Communion are just trash. And no, it isn't because they aren't as heavy. I enjoy their mellow work just as much on previous albums. It is because those two albums are just poorly thrown together and simply not good, let alone being on par with what we all know they are capable of.
AKGuitarist Just because you don't like it, it doesn't mean that the albums are trash. It's your fucking opinion, not a fact. It make you sound very immature calling it trash and 'poorly thrown together' in the way you did.
Ruben1459 So you are going to sit there and tell me that Heritage, Communion and Watershed are even remotely on the same level as Still Life, Blackwater Park or MAYH? This isn't a matter of personal taste or opinion. It is a simple fact. From a musical standpoint, they are trash. But, I understand that there will always be fanboys who will line up to suck their dicks no matter what they put out. It usually all boils down to being easily influenced and a general lack of musical composition. It's ok, I don't blame you for being ignorant.
You are clearly a troll or a 12 year old if you actually think that, from a musical standpoint, they are trash. Lack of musical composition, hahaha. Wait, that last sentence pretty much makes it obvious that you're just trying to piss people off for reactions...
Ruben1459 Yes, people who think their new work is gold clearly lack knowledge of good musical composition. It was mainly just a bunch of halfassed ideas thrown together and called an album. But go ahead, be a fan boy and pucker up to the band. I can at least think for myself and tell when something is good instead of being told what is good.
Confessor Of the tragedies in man Lurking in the core of us all The last dying call for the everlost Brief encounters, bleeding pain Lepers coiled ‘neath the trees Dying men in bewildered soliloquys Perversions bloom round the bend Seekers, lost in their quest Ghost of friends frolic under the waning moon It is the year of death Wielding his instruments Stealth sovereign reaper Touching us with ease Infecting the roots in an instant Burning crop of disease I am just a spectator An advocate documenting the loss Fluttering with conceit This doesn't concern me yet Still far from the knell Taunting their bereavement Mob round the dead Point fingers at the details Probing vomits for more Caught in unbridled suspense We have all lost it now Catching the flakes of dismay Born the travesty of man Regular pulse midst pandemonium You're plucked to the mass Parched with thirst for the wicked Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark The sun sets forever over Blackwater park
holy shit i had no idea the lyrics were this awesome. I just knew he said "the sun sets forever over black water park" which is fucking rad as hell, and the music is so good it didn't bother me i didn't know the lyrics. wow. thanks for posting this.
I have been listening to this song for about 2 months straight now and it doesn't cease to amaze me. The riffs are raw so they don't fade out even after you listen to them 200 times in a row. This is art of the purest form and it'll be tough to outdo this song in a million years. Its timeless
Yes. This is Steven Wilson. Look at this guy on the right. He has a VIP band as well as Steven. In addition, this guy on the right has a pendant on a black VIP strap. You can see it well in slow motion 0.25 x
@o0LanternLight0o My Favorite's are Zappa, and King Crimson, but Porcupine Tree, and Opeth are definitely up there for me. I love most of the older prog, and a lot of newer too. Have you ever heard of the band Comus? They are not for everyone, but they inspired Mikael a lot, and he talked about them in an interview the first time I heard them I went and ordered their cd. They are folky, but really creepy really dark, all acoustic, but oddly heavy. Try listening to Drip Drip you will see what I
Yeah there was like time period from like mid 2000's to 2017 where editors for all formats just went nuts, think of the bourne films, or the famous fence jumping scene from taken 3 (look it up it's ridiculous, or gordon ramsay's cooking videos from 2014-2017
Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree) produced the blackwater park album. It is odd that you would not like the voice. Listen to other tracks from Opeth and you'll find out how amazing the voice is. I think Mikael was struggling with his voice during this concert.
James Kostov idk, Tool’s Lateralus is an absolute masterpiece. I love both bands equally. For me personally, nothing beats the build up and execution of a climax in a good Tool song, although I think Opeth do a better job of entertaining you while you wait for that build up and the songs aren’t as climax-dependant. The Grudge is my favourite Tool song and probably one of my favourite songs of all time, but if you remove the climax at the end, it becomes just an alright song. If you did the same for Opeth it wouldn’t affect the overall song as much. That’s just my opinion though
@@jackkelly6251 I agree Tool are really really good at building to endings, especially the way maynards voice changes throughout songs. From almost haunting spiritual singing to screaming. They have a very unique and recognisable sound. Opeth are better technically (except danny carey) and theyre much more melodic while tool are more hypnotic in their soloing and drum style etc. Both are really different but great in their own way and i find myself going between them for my favourite band. (sometimes radiohead when i want to chill)
Matty Pez same, Opeth and Tool are tied as my favourite band. I listen to Opeth more (because their discography is much bigger) but Lateralus is my favourite album of all time, with Still Life being 2nd
Guillaume Lemaigre :D I have my 3 Top Bands, Gojira, Opeth and Genesis, followed by 50 bands or artists. But Gojira Opeth and Genesis are still the best. ;)
I love his death growl vocals from Blackwater Park, Deliverence and Ghost Reveries. I think his clean vocals have always been the same, which is awesome
Matt Cooke god. The vocals on Ghost Reveries are truly sublime. His singing is absolutely breathtaking there. And his dirty vocals sound like the fucking devil.
The guy has been carrying Opeth for more than 20 years and got tired of the genre... I can so imagine! His growls are perfectly fine since he stopped the in-ear monitor usage. But still I listen mostely to Watershed and before, not too much to Heritage. Wonder what next album will be like
@@Cheximus Arch Enemy's gone through three different vocalists over the years for reasons like this. Growling day in and day out is hard, especially since it's damaging to the vocal cords when done imperfectly.
I like how Opeth is dark and heavy, but... They are not like Carcass or Burzum, as examples. They don't sound exactly as no other group. They use Marshall, which make them sound vintage and classic, more than other groups. I hope someday they back to record sounds and classics as this.
Dear Sir/Madam Whilst I am appreciative of the overall aesthetic that one was trying to achieve throughout this video, one cannot help but be distracted by the constant cut shots. Yours sincerely, Tiberius Septim
@Redstar226 If you have good technique it wont do serious damage to your throat, and Mikael has always been very good techniqally, and even if you damage your throat it happens slowly, gradually. He just suddenly started doing this about 2 years ago.
well sure, fucking lady gaga is a talented musician too. but she chooses to make really synthetic sounding music that bores to death. never said anything about the guys being talented, but they have done nothing for music but make fools of them selfs. terrible lyrics, terrible melodies(regardless of difficulty), have you seen them play live? its horrid. im sure they are all great guys, but to even compare to opeth, obviously an over exaggeration on my part, but its just a joke.
@Benteiron I don't really mind his performance here, too bad I'm broke now and can't buy the DVD... Back to the post, so he changed his technique? I mean, I do notice that his growls on Watershed are sometimes much lower (SLOOOW DAYS!) or much higher (HEIR APPARENT!) than his usuals from albums before but I thought it's just cause he started utilizing the extreme ends of his range. So is it a new technique?
@DavidKinner hmmm ohhhhhhh you know what, you wrote your comment in two parts and i did not read the first half. i fucking love king crimson man, never got into zappa much but i like him too. but no i have never heard of comus, ima check em out right now, as for the lyrics, haha i dont really care, im not easaly offended or anything. ill tell you what i think about them.
@o0LanternLight0o No the band Comus Mikael suggested, they are a very good band, but their lyrical content is very hard for a lot of people to digest. literally talks about a being named Comus who searches for virgins to rape, the song Drip Drip is about rape. It's great, just make sure to checkout First Utterance their second album was just not the same at all.
@Xironia the Albert Hall is famous for its acoustic problems.. the echo problem was tackled when the mushrooms were installed under the ceiling to break the soundwaves efficiently, but still... the place isnt known for its acoustic, not as such venues as the Musikverein in Vienna or the concertgebouw in Amsterdam whcih were built around the same time...
@FirePower3006 I wouldn't personally say he has lost it, he is still much better than most vocalists. But compared to his prime years, yeah no comparison. I don't know of anyone that can keep their chords together with a singing style like his though. Much less for what, 20 years?
I think Mikael might be trying to give his throat a bit of a rest with his growling style here, I compared this directly to blackwater park at the roundhouse tapes where his growl is more "throaty" and consistent. It's a shame that it does your voice in :/ still a brilliant performance
I wouldn't judge about his growling, its just one concert , maybe he's a little cold or had some bad food that presses against the stomach , so he had to put more throat into his singing, maybe thats why they´re not that deep like on roundhouse could be anything
All you people that keep saying his growls are still good are just in denial. Obviously we can't blame him for his voice become weaker with age, he's been doing it for years and years... but stop kidding yourselves. He used to be a god amongst live growlers though, just listen to the Lamentations DVD.
@devilVOLUNTEER I agree with you on the atmosphere compared to roundhouse... for blackwater park, it seems more like ''hey ok we gotta do it guys'' rather than the ''Lets give them stuff to headbang till there necks break!!!!!'' on roundhouse haha xD but its my impression
@Aotd12 I have the DVD:P The reason the growls sound better in the Lotus Eater is because he used the same technique he uses in these videos already on Watershed, hence they dont sound out of place even though they are worse than before. In my opinion he did fairly well in Blackwater Park actually....
@o0LanternLight0o Yea, I know, Blackmore is a legend, but Mikael already seems more well-rounded, and can play so much different stuff, he never sounded like Blackmore before, and he almost sounds like a better version on Heritage. It's fucking crazy.
@rasaecnai They should because he's done with growling. He's noticed they've been lacking and Mikael decided he doesn't want damage his clean vocals so he's sticking with them. Did you like Damnation? I hope you did cause Heritage is gonna be a lot of that.
Axe definitely isn't Lopez but Axe is a better pure death metal drummer imo and he's been playing these songs so long that I appreciate him more then Lopez. Maybe it's cause I've also listened to him play with Bloodbath but he is beast on drums
@devilVOLUNTEER People are all like, 'Shut the fuck up about Mikael's growls,' but now he sounds more like a horny dinosaur than the snarl of Cerberus like he used to.... probably in order to preserve one of the best voices in metal.
I love this song, but there is no doubt his growls aren't what they used to be...as he has recently admitted, he has no real desire to do more growls in upcoming records for Opeth and thus leaving Bloodbath.
sorry dude you are just being rude. Opeth is 100% better than Dragonforce but they ARE great musicians. They are beyond cheezy as fuck with all they sing about but the musicians in the band are actually quite good.
@o0LanternLight0o You lucky bastard! lol My friend hates Death metal, but I showed him a lot of Opeth's songs, and he thinks they are amazing, there is just something about his singing voice it is so angelic.
@devilVOLUNTEER And also I think that whenever Peter is with the band, they are better. No offence to Fredrik, but Opeth lost a big chunk of who they were the moment he left. That's why Roundhouse is better for me.
I think that Mikaels voice have been much more, aggressive and much darker than before... i like it! To sing like that is fuckin hard. I growl myself, and i cant sing like Åkerfeldt without getting my voice fucked!
@DavidKinner do you mean porcupine tree or all prog rock?? but thats not all that true, only in absentia really has that kind of lyrical content, just based off the one piticular album theme.
@shadowlink2000000009 haha thanks, but really, I had to choose between a butt hair from MK or a complete collection of all Dragon force albums on vinyl, I would choose to have the butt hair
@devilVOLUNTEER I have been thinking about the decrease of the quality of his growls, has he changed his technique or fucked up his throat somehow or what? Since they are VERY bad nowadays.
@joeceph Agreed, I get ADHD watching the video, it flashes like every half second, it's utterly crap :-P but the music is fucking awesome, so I just listen and close my eyes ;-)
@TheSuicideAgonist Personally i dontl ike the 2 minute symphone on the song. Always skip that part i have an edited version without it. Other than that its a masterpiece of a song
@Iceozo1 should Opeth fans be worried about this? i mean yeah i noticed that too. his growls it used to overwhelm me with intensity. but now... i dont know. maybe because its live?
His voice goes a bit... Shouty towards the end. Mastodon-ish. Still though, bloody amazing band. *goes off to buy DVD to add to his complete collection of Opeth DVDs and CDs*
who gives a fuck what he looks like. He KILLS all of the songs. He is a great guitarist. Mike picked him for a reason. stop being a fanboy. Peter was epic. Fred is epic.
I've finally seen a plan to get me to play guitar again... after like 5 fucking years saying and wanting to. don't think one can listen to opeth's best riffs from the years one played guitar with a guitar around and not to try to play some... mix it with some black sabbath and ... then I'll try to learn how to growl without fucking my throat and I'll be better than ever 😂
Axe definitely isn't Lopez but Axe is a better pure death metal drummer imo and he's been playing these songs so long that I appreciate him more then Lopez
@DavidKinner who is blackmore? and ive hered heritage too, it was preaty good, i wanted a little more from it to be hounest but it was still really good
