My personal favorite because that song is what got me into Opeth. Been some 15 years or so, still doesn't fail to give me the feeling of listening to it to the first time. 🙌
Mike wrote this song about his ex who committed suicide while he was about to record this album. There are others songs in the album dedicated to her. 💔
OPETH- APRIL ETHEREAL This song is an Opeth staple, and the first Opeth song I ever listened to. The song that got me addicted. FYI- It's a brutal song, one of their earliest.
Your Opeth reactions are the best. I have been a huge fan of theirs for 20+ years and still get goosebumps when hearing certain songs. You have reacted to so many great tracks. I have favorites, as does everyone, that we would love to see you do. By the Pain I See in Others Voice of Treason Advent Amen Corner Hax Process
You had me at Opeth! Burden! This band changed my definition of heavy. The lyrics, the darkness , the beauty. My favorite, Deliverance. A tale of jealousy and murder. So much in their discography!
Continuum or Lovelorn Crime off of their newest album (In Cauda Venenum) are very similar to this one. Long, sweeping ballads, and very reminiscent of Pink Floyd. Great album.
The sound of the organ and guitars does remind me of the one and only: Focus. A famous Dutch progrockband from the seventies. They were groundbreaking in those early days. Guitarist Jan Akkerman had (and still has) a specific tone and technique that was considered by his pears of that time to be world class. And of course very seventies indeed. Mikael Akerfeldt did, if I'am not mistaken, mention Focus several times as one of his inspirations.
I wanted it to go to the next song so bad at the end haha still haven''t seen a reaction to Porcelain Heart from you guys so that would be my recommendation
Yup…you are so right. Opeth do want this song to sound like the 70’s rock…with a hint of Deep Purple and Rainbow. They nailed it. My favourite track. 👍🏻👍🏻
I know you’ve done a bunch of their stuff already but the Opeth Live at Red rocks videos are incredible. The light show, the control over the vibe and crowd..it’s worth the revisit.
About that ending. Mikael was seated in the studio, playing the repeating lick. The other guitarist Fredrik was standing just behind his left side, and randomly detuning strings as Mikeal just kept playing. I heard them talk about it once in an interview.
We're getting close... maybe the next one will be from the post Watershed era... I'd enjoy to see "Moon above, sun below" or "All things will pass" for sure ! Thanks for this one. Peace !
I'm so glad you have listened to this brilliant track.guys. What a ballad. What a band .You are so right with your description of the song ....sombre yet uplifting. The keyboard solo is insane . I was hoping you would forget and let it run to the next track ..👍🤣.. Thank you for yet another brilliant reaction to my favourite band Opeth. 👍✌️🤘☮️
The thing is with Opeth and most non metal fans they hear the Growls/Gutterals and instantly say “nope not for me” then turn off.. and it’s them people out there missing songs like this! There was a time when Mikael had a growl/scream what the devil would be envious of.. but he’s cleans are stunning genuinely one of the melodic voices ever! It’s always good seeing other people enjoying your favourite band cool reaction! I look forward too the next! Also I think it’s time too heat these guys live I strongly recommend masters apprentices live at shepards bush!
Don't know if it's been mentioned yet but the ending of the song, when they were recording it someone detuned the guitar as he was playing as a joke, that "ah ha ha ha ha" at the end is Mikael laughing about it, ended up keeping it in the song! 💪
Ready to accept that Mickeal Aferfeldt with the help of Steve Wilson is brilliant. Watershed is the only album they did that I could handle on Mushrooms!!
couldn't wait to get home for this one!!! the First time a few years ago when you 2 were shocked by his amazing singing voice I was like, they have to hear Burden then lol Worth the wait!!. This is Freedumfries I just use my real name now lol
The outro is Mikael playing the acoustic guitar while someone else is slowly detuning the strings one by one and so the sound gets worse and worse until Mikael couldn't take it anymore and started laughing. They then cut the laughter up into that staccato sound and it leads into the next track.
I never really paid attention to the acoustics at the end, the guitars going out of tune was a cool effect, and combined with the laugh blending into that clicking sound, I bet it leads into the next track so well. There are still several great tracks to choose from. I still think Windowpane deserves its turn, but I also want to see The Funeral Portrait. Shit man...Opeth.
You both should check out “In My Time Of Need” from the Damnation album since you really liked this one. Also “Face Of Melinda” from Still Life has some of the same feel, which is more subdued Opeth than most of the songs you’ve reacted to so far. I’d also like to recommend a couple more from Blackwater Park… “Harvest” and “The Funeral Portrait.”
Ahem... Silhouette, Under the Weeping Moon, To bid you Farewell, Moonlapse Vertigo(roundhouse tapes maybe?), Harvest, Wreath OR By the pain I see in Others, Windowpane OR Closure, Beneath the Mire - Atonement(twofer?), I feel the Dark, Moon Above Sun Below, Sorceress, and maybe just the whole Album - In Cauda Venenum
Whatever you choose, do a LIVE version! Their live stuff is so damn tight. Something like Under the Weeping Moon (from Roundhouse Tapes) would be epic. It's from their first album.
Would be great if you keep delving into Opeth's more atypical songs like this, I think it's time to get into their post-Watershed era. All Things Shall Pass Folklore Moon Above, Sun Below
I watch your Opeth reactions many many times.....the one of Heir Apparent is super funny....so it is always great when i see a new reaction. Next one should be one of their second album, Morningrise, because it is a very unique piece of their discography. Black Rose Inmortal would be great, but it last more than 20 minutes.....so, my recommendation is The Night and the Silent Water.
Another very somber song similar to this one is "Faith in Others" that not many people react to! Or if you feel like a heavy one then do "The Funeral Portrait" or "Beneath the Mire" as recommended by many others!
