The watermark of a great father. He listens to his son's music, reads the lyrics and learns about them before passing any judgement, good or bad. That's a great role model for a young man to have. The world desperately needs more men like you.

One thing I've always noticed about Opeth is that their lyrics deal with dark themes, but they never glorify them. They're always painted anxiously, and negatively. There's a real genuine sorrow within them. Their lyrics are often intentionally hard to interpret, too, in order to keep it meaningful to each individual listener. It's also important to remember that with bands like Opeth and Porcupine Tree, the lyrics are often from someone else's perspective and they're not necessarily good. Porcupine Tree has an album called "In Absentia", and most of the lyrics are from the perspective of serial killers, the idea of "In Absentia" referring to their souls being absent.
@truedarklander
@truedarklander 5 лет назад
Yeah, but our dude Michael also did some pure death metal with purely evil lyrics in his two albums with Bloodbath xd
@louzermonster7323
@louzermonster7323 5 лет назад
"the lyrics are often from someone else's perspective and they're not necessarily good" Good example is The Devil's Orchard. When it came out people made a bit of a big deal of the "God is dead" line, but in the context of the song it's a person wandering who is hearing voices tell him that, they are not the words of Mikael himself.
@RohannvanRensburg
@RohannvanRensburg 5 лет назад
@@louzermonster7323 Oh absolutely. Mikael even stated that's not some philosophical claim, it's part of the concept. The end line is the giveaway -- throughout the song it's stated in some sort of triumphant way, but at the end of the song it sounds bone-chillingly unsettling. They're easy to misinterpret.
@RohannvanRensburg
@RohannvanRensburg 5 лет назад
@@truedarklander Mikael is an agnostic/atheist, and some of his lyrics reflect that, but again, they're never really stated in a defiant way. I don't respect the lyrics Mikael writes with Bloodbath, but he has stated that the entirety of it is tongue in cheek.
@truedarklander
@truedarklander 5 лет назад
@@RohannvanRensburg oh I know I just thought it's """funny""" in a way. 10000% of death metal bands that have gorey/violent lyrics do it memely. Unless you're Deicide of course. Satanic lyrics are another thing entirely though.

@Héctor Bernal My understanding is that atheism and agnosticism deal with separate things: Atheism with belief and agnosticism with knowledge/certainty. So typically there are two types on opposing sides of the topic of god. An agnostic atheist is someone who doesn't know whether or not a god exists (agnostic), but doesn't believe/is not convinced of the existence(atheist). This is pretty common on the side of the nonreligious/nonbelievers. A gnostic theist on the other hand believes (theism) AND is certain/claims to, or does, know a god exists(gnosticism). The differentiation is the 'a' in front of those words. 'a'theism vs theism and 'a'gnosticism vs gnosticism; nonbelief vs belief, nonknowledge/noncertainty vs knowledge/certainty(or claims to knowledge)

My interpretation of this song is as follows: This is a murder (by drowning) committed by an insane person who has a warp sense of deliverance/salvation. The song is taken from the perspective of the murderer during the perpetration of the murder. “Your salvation is found in a sinners deed” He believes that he is bringing salvation to the victim by killing them. The salvation is for the victim and he is the sinner doing the deed (or that the deed he is committing is a sin). It’s possible that he sees them as unclean/evil/sinners that requires saving. Also, by doing his own sinner’s deed (murder) he is also bringing salvation to himself. “Deliverance, thrown back at me…. Laughing at me” However, after the murder he realises that salvation and deliverance will never be his because the devil (his insanity) is guiding the way. The devil/insanity is tricking him. By his sinner’s deeds he can never be saved. Cheers!

It's because they generally blindly hate on metal without knowing the first thing about it, just like they hate on everything else without knowing the first thing about it. A lot of religion is willful ignorance turned to hatred. There's this stereotype that metal is devil worship, but most metal, especially the bands and songs that deal with a lot of religious and occult imagery and themes rail against hypocrisy and hatred perpetrated by religion, not against (a) god.

First time seeing one of your videos, and it warms my heart to see something like this. I grew up in the church listening to this type of music and always felt like I was out of the fold. Thankfully, I still had people that were invested in me, but they could never take the time to sit and have a conversation about my taste in extreme music. All I ever wanted was to have a conversation, and this is what you are giving. Just now subscribing, and I look forward to see what more you have.

For sure. The protagonist was acknowledging that this act was being lead by the Devil. That’s a Biblical truth. John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” Not to mention those harmonies were awesome!

Really enjoyed this video. Watching your son look over at you seeing how you were reacting to various bits in the song was so great to watch and you taking the time to listen and understand his choice of music is amazing. I look forward to sharing this experience with my son one day. Cheers from a huge metal fan from Australia.
