24 years of playing the same material just isn't for everyone. As they have honed their craft, they have also broadened there horizons. This won't please everyone, but that's how life is. Enjoy the old, but nothing wrong with trying something new...I'm in my late 40s & although I loved Iron Maiden as a teen, I rarely listen to them now. Not because l don't like them,but rather I have heard them 1000's of times,& am ready for something new (to me).When I played in metal bands back then, I got a lot grief for trying to introduce my bandmates to a new "Thrash" band.....Metallica... Very heavy to 1983 ears. Now its classic rock and tame by today's standards. Variety is the spice of life!

I agree with the larger message but it's not like the old stuff all sounded the same. Sure the vocals may have sounded the same but opeth has always been ever changing. From album one. The only really key difference was they were a heavier prog band and now are not as heavy.

Probably the most Damnation-style song they have done since Damnation, except for possibly "Face in the Snow."

@leisergeist 9 лет назад
People don't like change (me included to an extent). I personally enjoyed their "old" style better, but Opeth is Opeth. I'll enjoy whatever they do as long as it's still Mikael and company for the most part. I've never seen anyone blatantly call it shit anyway o_O

Some people just like metal and nothing else. Opeth isn't really metal anymore and that's why they're pissed. I like every Opeth record although I prefer to hear the old stuff. Maybe more metalheads need to listen to different kinds of music so they too can enjoy new Opeth.

LYRICS : What is left when the morning comes Is the memory of a future And when my plight is done There is nothing left to hold onto There were friends waiting at my door They are gone now, for the year is new I stuck by my word And when the rains came Made it true and pure, to dissolve the hurt Are we nursing destruction? Pursuing a dream we once had Was it our intention to follow this road 'til the end Even if the end is a world of sorrow? There is a bond between us Even if it's frayed it is unbreakable So I come for you always And I welcome pain For a second of belonging somewhere There were times when I lost my way With hope pouring from my soul In a shelter from the sun I don't want to bare my scars for you

I generally prefer the old stuff, but I can understand the impulse to want to do something new and 'mature' after so many years in the biz. I feel kind of bad for established ultra-heavy death and black metal bands who have painted themselves into a corner musically and are still putting on corpsepaint and squeezing into their plus-size assless chaps at 40. It's fun at 25, but that shit gets old - not to mention embarrassing - fast.

I would be fine if they went how Damnation turned out. There are some parts in Heritage (Face in the Snow) and Pale Communion (Faith In Others, and to a smaller extent Elysian Woes. I miss those songs more than the heavy stuff. Going into a new sound is all well and good if you're a composer doing pieces. But for a band you need to establish something as to not alienate anyone. Opeth aren't The Melvins and it shows.

@AnUnnamed3vil 9 лет назад
If you believe either of those things, you are an idiot. Anyone who aspires to be in a band does it for fame and recognition, not to mention the money. You honestly believe they do it just for "The Music"? Yet another Fanboy who thinks the sun shines out of Mikeal's ass. He can do no wrong in your eyes. The fact is, they abandoned their previous sound because they knew they'd never get any airplay. That's what Mikeal wants. Global recognition.
@PennyDreadful1
@PennyDreadful1 9 лет назад
AnUnnamed3vil Well then again he is swedish. We live in a culture were money is not as much an incentive for making things. Compared to say the U.S. In a culture were no one is extremely rich or extremely poor. Music becomes more about self realization. And If you think they are doing this to get airplay? No one wants to listen to a geeky little genre from the 70's. They are playing this kind of music because Mikael feels like it. He has also had death threats aimed at him. Which would piss anyone off. Which is why he might be a little cold towards DM nowadays.

+Judas Iscariot I know what you mean in terms of the vocals. I think in some songs it works really well and in others it doesn't. He stretches out certain words for effect with more vibrato now while also using an odd timing or meter with what can be more unusual phrasing in a series of other lyrics, which he's done a lot more of since maybe around the time of Watershed. I've actually always probably the enjoyed the more simpler, somber vocal melodies best. Listen to "Still Day Beneath the Sun" to get an idea of what I mean. In the past, the contrast between the lyrically descriptive and dense, very visceral death metal vocals and the light and airy melodic vocals meant that his cleanly sung vocals didn't need to do as much heavy lifting to tell the story in the past. The cleans could stay more complimentary and soothing, often portraying vulnerability, without dancing around too much on top of the riffs and chord changes, because the death growls could be the punchy, varied vocals. Now though since the clean vocals are all that's there, it can come off as a little over sung in terms of telling the story. In his defense though, imagine trying to tell the lyrical story of the song 'The Drapery Falls" with only clean vocals. That's the kind of thing I'm talking about - how does one do all those emotions justice over such pummeling music with only clean singing without overdoing it? I'm not sure if you can. Keeping the variation within the songs is definitely more of a challenge now on these new songs without that stark contrast in vocals and heaviness to light. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes over the next few albums. I'd really like to see some more dynamics and contrast, even if it doesn't mean death growls at all. "Just one second.. and I was left with nothing" That kind of simple melody and delivery still probably does it best for me, with the Damnation and Still Life albums being a highlight for me in terms of cleanly sung melodies. A song like Weakness is almost perfect in that regard. Mikael's really grown a lot as a singer and I give him all the credit in the world for his success, but sometimes I enjoyed the more plaintive, simpler vocal melodies of past albums where he didn't sound like he was trying so hard to emote a range of things in every other line. Again "Still Day Beneath the Sun" is one of my favorite vocal performances by him. It sounds confessional and vulnerable and haunting, which is I guess how many of us best like our Opeth clean singing to be because it's mostly what we got into Opeth with for like 7 to 8 albums in a row. Artists should do whatever moves them most though and Opeth should make whatever kind of music they want. They've made enough classics in my book to kind of have a free pass to do just about anything at this point.
