LYRICS
Hey you, will you be true
When you can see through what I do
Feel the pain in your brain, insane
Will I see my name in your scars
And you will see what you mean to me
Lust between the lines
Do you feel the need
When the night comes down
And when the night comes down
A father is waiting
And you will see what you mean to me
Lost control and called your name
Left a home in the pouring rain
In a sea of guilt and shame
Will we sustain

Mikael has made it clear that Opeth is not about a specific genre. If the fans are to be pleased with Opeth's output, they must have the openness and courage to participate in the artistic journey Mikael and Opeth are leading. It's sad to see some close-minded critics who got stuck with Opeth at a certain phase in the band's evolution. But honestly, the band has achieved an astonishing level of creativity and innovation that I cannot but be grateful for the music they are producing. Truly, Opeth is a one-of-a-kind band that managed to create a genre-defining sound of its own. And the rest is yet to come!

I read that Mikael got a divorce during the making of this album. My friend pointed me that this song might be his thoughts on the days, when he left his home. As the lyrics state a lot of personal messages like "And you will see what you mean to me" and the final verse: "Lost control and called your name Left a home in the pouring rain In a sea of guilt and shame Will we sustain" is pretty clear that this song is about him leaving from his home and life and struggling with agony behind it. And song's name Folklore might suggest about the fact that people go separate ways and everything around every person's "lore" is about finding or losing something. It's a common story that many people share and the stories have very much similarities. Thus, it's called a folklore.

Cheers Anon I think I read somewhere that it's about incest, and I think it really makes sense: "Hey you, will you be true When you can see through what I do Feel the pain in your brain, insane Will I see my name in your scars" This would be the Father pondering if his son or daughter can see through what he is doing, the real meaning that is, and if he/she will bears the scars of what he did "And you will see what you mean to me" This part is in the sense of the son/daughter will see what the Father really feels about him/her; spoiler alert: the answer is in the next line "Lust between the lines Do you feel the need" Lust between the family lines, that kinda makes it clear; "do you feel the nedd?" I think would be the Father asking if the son/daughter also feels "the need", or the sexual desire, as does he; "When the night comes down And when the night comes down A father is waiting" And that about cleared any doubts I had; Father is waiting in the night; And you will see what you mean to me "Lost control and called your name" To lose control would be that he gave in to his "need" and went on with the sexual act, and "called the name" would then be a reference to what one does during orgasm, calling out the partners name; "Left a home in the pouring rain In a sea of guilt and shame Will we sustain" After that the Father left home in guilt and shame from what he did, pondering if they will be able to live with "it". What do you think? Hey Mikael, may we get you official input on the matter?

Marc Hoyland Damnation sounds nothing like Heritage nor Pale Communion. Seriously, Damnation is a one of a kind album, it's much darker and quieter than their new albums. And I wouldn't say it is progressive at all, unlike these last two albums.

@azrael666ethereal 9 лет назад
Rarity Sparkle I agree it is a one of a kind and I love it, but there's alot of that stuff happening more so on recent albums. Before it was death metal with acoustic interludes and now they are much softer. Damnation is very progressive. You can hear the Camel influences on it...

Marc Hoyland Well that's true, they are much softer in their recent albums and that is similar to Damnation, but I still believe that Damnation was darker, scarier and deeper than these new albums (Heritage and Pale Communion), they are, in my opinion, much "happier" than Damnation, and sounds so different. Regarding on the progressiveness of Damnation, I think I have to hear it again, since I cannot notice much progressiveness on it.

Opeth changed directions and this is one of the few songs in later albums that I like. Another being Cusp of Eternity.

+Harshal Bhave i love pretty much every song opeth has released i love metal but i also love rock jazz sould rap and many more genres of music it blows my mind how Michael Akerfelt can transcend from such a heavy section to such a beautiful lulluby, this is why i love Opeth so much...... right up there with Led Zeppelin and Maynard Keenan
