@@bums009 Not always true. When people upload videos with copyrighted music, the copyright owner can "claim" the video and put ads as they please (probably at random). Since this is Opeth's official RU-vid channel however, I would assume they DO have control over the ads. I think the 5 minute ad is added as a default thing though (and not something they did manually), and I agree that they should remove it. ads have absolutley no place in the middle of a song.
Have Opeth ever had a better recorded sound? The engineering and production values on this album, and this song especially, are as good as anything I can think of. Everything sounds exactly as it should, every contribution from each instrument perfectly placed in the recorded sound. And considered from beginning to end, this album has their best songs.
+laterceravida I hope the remastered versions of deliverance and damnation are this crisp. I personally never had a problem with the album quality like a lot of people do but compared to Ghost Reveries they are quite sub par.
+Drake Smith Their Las two albuns, Heritage and Pale Comunion are very prog. Guess that's what you'll like if you ended up here because of a DT song. Opeth its an amazing band, certainly one of the best bands i've ever heard. I would be lying if i try to tell my favorite album.
Ghost of Perdition can put people off. I remember listening to it and then not checking Opeth out for one year. Harlequin Forest is much more accessible.
@@t.hussain921 I've never liked the beginning of Ghost Of perdition (=no beginning at all, sounds like the song continues from the middle). As great a song as it might be, the beginning just, idk, doesn't work.
Their style was progressive death metal, and now it's progressive metal or just progressive rock. The shift away from the kind of metal they were known for was on Heritage, when they decided they wanted to play more organic, traditional sounding, progressive metal.
+Meshuggapeth Well I seen a interview with Mikael on the subject of his older style of music. He mentioned something along the lines of he's tired of playing the super distorted growling music. But in the end doesn't really matter what they put out, it's going to be brilliant in whatever style they choose. Heritage was amazing in it's own category.
I cherish the Ghost Reveries album its one of those ones where you cant skip a single track. Just sheer fckin awesomeness from start to finish. Same goes for the Blackwater Park album.
He was a metalhead for sure, I have a picture of him looking all badass and menacing, like get ready to blow your brains out and start that pit up. Classical music can be heavy as hell. People say all classical music is relaxing. But hello now Vivaldi can be hard and heavy, Mozart even more. Beethoven oooof. But heaviest is Chopin. Just like Opeth heavy bit beautiful
@@johnsonmonkeman5766 Bro why you gotta do him like that. He was just making an observation and you just busted in here and roasted his ass for no reason. You a menace FR
***** I think every Opeth's record is good (at least), even Watershed has it's brilliants, so does Heritage and Pale Communion. I don't even mentioned Orchid and Morningrise which is Opeth's most sincere, dark and beautiful records IMO.
dark knight You idiot. Just because you don't like something, it doesn't mean no one else can. Although you may think it a fact that they've 'gone down the drain', it's just your opinion. It's insulting to say that certain people are idiots and accept bands that get terrible. Can they not like something that you don't? Is this concept so difficult to grasp?
dark knight were you in it for the screaming? All of their albums are incredible... Learn to listen for musical composition and actual talent... they all are amazing.
The 1st Opeth album I bought. I forget what year I discoveredu them, probably 2005 or 06. Then I got Watershed, then Blackwater Park. To me, they are the Pink Floyd of metal. I am not comparing them to Pink Floyd, but I am sure Opeth would be flattered
Heres why no more growling from Mike. Akerfeldt decided to address the drama when asked if he would ever growl again on an Opeth record: “I can’t say, really, I’ve never turned my back on anything and I’m not going to start now. It’s not like I don’t like that style of vocal delivery anymore. But I just can’t develop any more as a singer if I keep on screaming. In fact, I think I got worse at that as the years went by. But if the future songs require those vocals, then that’s what I’ll deliver. It seems like a long shot at this stage.”
honestly i think damnation is their best album and that has really good singing on it. however akerfeldt is one of only a very select few singers who i think pulls off growls and screams incredibly well. but i never let that overshadow his very beautiful singing voice.
I demand, that every second Opeth song has at least 1 minute growl part in it!!!!!!!!!!!! And every 4 songs has to be one really weird heavy song! This song here is the perfect example how it should be done! :) One of their best works imho, even if I'd change my mind every time I listened to Watershed about 8 times :D
@@maranathashalom9402 i like their newer stuff but i agree that around two songs from their next album should have some influence from their older songs. they dont even need growls. they could just be like something from damnation idk. also i love their song The Garroter from their newest album. that song has a lot of potential to evolve into a new style for the band
He still growls in live shows. Think they only did 2 songs off of the new album & the rest were older works. He still uses the 'in ear monitors' so it's the crappy growling unfortunately instead of the type he did at the Royal Albert Hall show. Was still a great show.
Favorite Opeth song by a mile, and that's saying something. This song is just unbelievable. It is perfect. "The trees/harlequin forest" part is probably the most hauntingly, longingly, tragically beautiful thing I've ever heard. It paints such a detailed visual picture being deep inside a dark forest to walk alone amongst the trees forever.
My wife and I just went to the redwoods and Sequoias in California, this was the theme song we played through the trip. "Into the trees Past meadow grounds And further away from my home"
This album really is the sweetspot that Opeth achieved. The atmosphere mixes Still Life, Blackwater Park, and a mixture of Deliverence/Damnation all into a quantified experience. It's really hard for me to decide between those albums which ones are my favorite and then here is Ghost Reveries. This album really strikes a chord, perhaps I am having an epiphany that this is truly my favorite. I'm not sure but it really brings me back.
Yeah that's a good statement, it's really their sweetspot. Even though claiming it's their best is debatable, it's the best mixture among all the styles they've explored.
This song is just incredible. It has about 9 stunning riffs that some bands would be lucky to get just one in an entire album. Ridiculous talent. I absolutely love this song.
INSTRUMENTS OF DEATH BEFORE ME!!!!!! UGGHH!! I can't decide whether that is my favorite of Mikael's "grunts". The one at the beginning of Blackwater Park is also incredible. There's some good ones though. I never miss an opportunity to partake in said grunts. They're cathartic.
alex ladrón theyre both awesome but mike is the mastermind behind their sound IN THE BAND since he said he writes templates to what he wants everything to sound like
I listen to just about every type of music there is. And I genuinely think Opeth has some of the most well composed and written songs to ever be made. Songs like Harlequin Forest and Hessian Peel are just mind-blowing in their richness, and the way the music paints such wast pictures to let you sink into your own mind and get lost in. Truly one of the best bands on earth
There's no words to describe such excellence. Martin Lopez was a key composing member. His drumming is exceptional; brutal, complex and speedy yet emotional and heartbreaking.
Started listening to Opeth way back in high school, around 2011~2012, for literally a decade. I started with their 'metal' era with, beginning with "Ghost Reveries", which made me go down a rabbit hole and listen to everything they'd released. In this decade of constantly following up with their sound, they were there during my ups and downs, helping in so many aspects of my life, metal-wise and mental wise. I had to deal with personal issues, I felt lonely a bunch of times in those years, and even struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. Opeth's music to me was an escape from reality, I could always go back and find comfort, I felt connected with so many of Mikael's lyrics, it made me rethink my life decisions and start to improve. Thankfully I've found a way to deal with my inner problems and traced a well tough path for my life. I managed to overcome my depression, which I never felt ever again so far, managed to get my bachelor's degree, and started to take care of my body by eating healthy, exercise and and stopping using drugs. And all and all never abandoned listening to their music. It helped me a lot. I mean it. Got me an Opeth tattoo on my arm, I dunno, I am grateful for knowing this band, thankful for all the good times I had with them, and plus, ITS FUCKING AWESOME In ten years, I have not been able to attend an Opeth concert, because they rarely played in my hometown, Sao Paulo, Brazil. And this was on my bucket list, for years I've been wanting to see them live for the first time. But the universe granted me my wish, next year, on February 8th, 2023, Opeth will play a gig in Sao Paulo and guess what, I got the tickets!!!! I am so happy that I will watch my favorite band for the very first time!!!! I feel so good Thank you, Opeth
The best metal drummer I ever played with was Brazilian. Your nation and culture seems to have a lot of respect for metal, and especially metal drums. Enjoy the show my bro. Peace.
That ending ... I love this type of endings, it's almost a genre in itself, but they are so rare ... Gojira's Remembrance comes to mind ... anyone knows any other songs with this type of ending?
Snelle Fjöll try listening to more rhythm orientated metal music if you like this kind of riffing. a nice start could be meshuggah or bands like that (maybe listen to their song ''I''). and if you like that kind of stuff there is actually the whole ''djent'' movement that revolves more or less around the meshuggah sound, with bands such as periphery, animals as leaders, etc. one artist i personally would recommend is david maxim micic. you definately find alot of complex rhythm stuff in his music too, but it is very different from gojira or bands like that. i hope i could help you
I agree. From a composition standpoint it is definitely their best. You never know what you’re going to hear next but you know it’s going to fucking great.
This is simply the best metal song ever written. I cannot believe it took 44 years for me to hear it; It satisfies every metal emotion I have. Opeth must be God's house band....I have to now re evaluate the other bands in my music collection as I have clearly been wasting my time. What the hell is wrong with the 35 assholes that voted thumbs down on this?
Bo Jangles I feel that Need more chops This is something to aspire to. Once someone proves something possible, someone will surpass them shortly. Beautiful part of human nature. Just a shame that so few dare to push themselves
One of my favorite Opeth songs to drum to. It goes through so many moods, and has some of Lopez’s finest drum work. The bell/fill build up part at 8:13 The hihat and splash accent part at 3:30 Then the straight groove at 5:05 Then the bad ass stuttering outro at 10:00. I used to have a guitar player friend who could play this song so damn good. Though he never wanted to play Opeth because he had to tune his guitar all weird. But damn this record is a classic. Genre defining for modern prog metal.
2:30 the low growl during the transition from soaring "chorus" back to a heavy section is one of the sickest Opeth moments for me. Absolute masterpiece.
randyhalfway1992 You are correct. Old comment, I know, but no one seems to talk about it. Reverie is the part added on the end of Atonement, it's listed differently depending on the album edition though.
Its funny how noone seems to get that the lyrics are about dissociation/isolation and the feelings/visions that come with it ... These words are most beloved by me because i felt like them for years.... Hail Opeth forever
LOL, I've been in the same boat; I once got cake level baked and started thinking of a friend while listening to this song. I was wielding a meat lance by the really edgy halfway point LOL.
Akerfeldt's diversity is always what impressed me the most from him. Personally I only enjoy death growls the way he does them (and that's nothing but 100% personal taste, the way everybody's opinion actually is!) People are allowed to like what they like, but not relating to something is all about the listener but not much about a true, well rounded musician like Mike. If even only one more person starts considering that for the first time, it will have been worth it to me for even mentioning it. His clean singing voice is so awesome, I cant understand why anyone but hard-core metal fans are unable to hear his transcendent ability. (It was Metallica years ago who first showed me that there can be much heaviness in even the cleanest vocals if they are done authentically.) No insult intended to anyone. Im a die hard advocate of having an open mind with music (to a point) ESPECIALLY metal. Love this song, of course!
I am not a very emotional man, but somehow most of the songs on this album brought me to tears. That's how you know the songs appeal to you! Thanks opeth!
I like the second to last bass pick during this part, ever since I noticed it I can't unheard it, such a subtle little note but I makes a difference... to me at least..
I hate the fact that katatonia seriously tried to bite off Opeth big time to a point of insanity....I mean I know the Jonas Renkse is in bloodbath but so was Mikael at one time.....
It was amazing seeing Opeth coming up on the metal scene from 2004-2010 I saw almost every tour cycle especially this one was very special. Marquee Theater AZ when shows used to cost $20-30.
@@BenAbrigil I don't think saying I write poetry is self aggrandisement xD It is just making a point that I pay more attention to nuances in writing than most people probably do; due to writing poetry. It is not bragging, it is merely making an observation.
From what I've read, "Reverie" is actually the bit starting at around 5:23 in "Atonement", which then flows right into this track. The songs were divided incorrectly when converted to digital.
@@chjoel7803 Right, and something similar happened with "Requiem" and "The Apostle in Triumph" on the first album. The second half of the former got tagged to the beginning of the latter in error.
If I am to describe Opeth, it would go like this: their lyrics, harmonies, instrumental parts and ideas behind their music are in one word, Genius and Profound. After listening to Opeth you can compare how much shit is written nowadays by others and have a good laugh thereof.
