In this video, Steven presents the next artist in the Artist Tone series, Opeth. Steven is trying out a few things with this series. In the future, this series will be broken up into individual segments in order to address and break down each individual element in order to give each piece of the arrangement the attention and detail it deserves. This video has the performance and the following will be a breakdown of the bass processing and the next after that will break down the guitar tracks. Hopefully you enjoy the new format!

Interesting choice to play this song on a jazzmaster. I have to admit it works great for note separation on riffs, although I'm missing a bit of the low-end "thump" when playing palm-mute.

Wow the tones are spot on...great cleans!!! I wish you'd do another a/b ing the jazzmaster pups to p90s...to see if that satisfies the guy toward the end of the thread that says jazzmaster pups sound opposite to p90s..I'm sure there are some differences....

I'd these are stock, then these J Masics JM pickups are closer to P90s. The JMJM Squier uses different pickups and have screws like P90s

I knew most of the single coils sounds bright and clear for hard tones, but it's well to confirm that in this video. I think people underrates single coils because are commonly asosiate to clean tones. But here is demonstrated that this type of sounds works great with almost all the loud styles. Also I love the "twang" when distorted. Besides, we live in an era where almost all the plugins or pedalboards have noise gate, so the "hum" it's not a problem anymore. Endless love to the single coils.

I know Opeth is considered a metal band but their guitar tone has always struck me as more of a rock/high gain rock tone so I thought i'd try out the single coils first. They ended up sounding the best out of the guitars I tried so I ended up going with those. :)

@@vheissumusic It's true, the pickups in the jazzmaster are single to that specific model. Similar enough to P90's though that I don't think it's important enough to correct because that's not the point of the channel. 🤷‍♂️

Not sure a P90 / single coil equipped guitar was the right choice for a tone like this…IIRC Michael used PRS with the HFS bridge pickup for this rhythm tone. It’s not quite there IMHO.

Did you use an IR for the acoustic part ? If so do you think you can share it ? I don't own Nolly to extract it ^^

Nah, I didn't use a IR. I mic'd it and blended it with the DI. I'll go into how I process it with the Archetype: Nolly in the guitar video so you can do the same with either the Plini or the Abasi. I may also do a comparison of mics just to show what kind of tones you can get with different styles/price ranges.

Yeah you'll need the plugins, insert them into your tracks and record your guitar di via your interface. From the images on the screen behind him lookes like the nolly and omega plugins at least were used

There's a midi file in the folder that will have the tempo mapping. The song dips in and out around 100bpm though. :)
