It was really because of the way they understood how to use him that made him so funny. And the spent so much time getting him on air. Many other interns may have been funny as well but they didnt get the air time David got. He will forever be a Legend.

Why I never feel sorry for Opie (not everyone can have the raw off the cuff talent of Ant or Jim) is that, in over a decade of radio with them, he never bothered to brush up on any of the half dozen movies they kept quoting and riffing on. I would have been SO EASY to contribute that way, but no that was beyond Opie. Imagine being offered millions for a job, and all you had to do was read off a piece of paper, watch half a dozen of the best movies ever made, and not interrupt the funny people in the room, then failing at ALL THREE.

8 years after this comment and it’s painfully clear the sum was greater than the parts. Ants network is dreck top to bottom. Opie is toast. Jim and Sam is virtually unlistenable. It may not be completely true about Opie steering the ship, but there’s something to it. Anything any of them do right now is awful without the other people.
