That is so true: a whole class of retro machines is dedicated to the sole purpose of being awesome, perfect and best of them all (I suspect people who build these might just not know what exactly do they want out of the retro PC scene, so they try to cover all possible standards with best parts just to be safe). And a whole different story is building and *using* realistic PCs built to just play games (not benchmarking or listening them), often much better tailored for one's genuine needs. I'm glad you've found the time to actually enjoy yourself playing some games for your own fun! :)

It's like the more retro stuff I got, the less games I played, and it became more about collecting and being apart of that community than actually enjoying the games. Last few years, tho, I've been more about collecting stuff digitally and focusing more on a few selected platforms, and that definitely made me play the actual games again. So yeah, reducing clutter and having a clean/accessible setup is definitely important and makes enjoying retro games a lot easier.

If you can find a PCMCIA sound card it'd probably be a better option since it could also do digital audio instead of just AdLib midi, but anymore they're pretty rare and hard to find. For retro gaming on Laptops your usually better off with a Pentium era system since Active Matrix displays were more common and laptops were generally coming with SB compatible sound, 486 laptop were pretty much built to do business stuff on and usually only had passive matrix displays that are ghosty and awful for playing games with the exception of a few models that offered active matrix displays at a high cost premium , not many were sold at the time and they tend to be sought after by collectors and thus are comparitively expensive compared to more common pentium machines.

Thanks Phil for that great Vid! I also thought about buying such a device for an old Thinkpad Laptop, which has a absolutely gaming incompatible soundcard built in. My concerns were compatibility and ease of driver and patch handling. But you showed how easy it will be. Only the sound effects are missing over this interface. How cool would that be? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think combining this device for great music with PC speaker to have some sound effects would be the best option to get the most out of old laptops or if you cant use a PCI/ISA soundcard.

Its a nice little device that's certainly had a lot of effort put into it. Unfortunately, no DMA for audio samples and no Descent compatibility really kills this for me... I'm gonna have to pass until a solution for DMA is worked out. With that said, if there's anything I think SerdaShop should work on next, it would be Serial to MIDI adapters. SoftMPU supports driving a MIDI interface through a serial port and simple adapters can be built to adapt a RS-232 connection to a MIDI DIN connection. This would open up the use of software or hardware MIDI synths on devices like your thin client here.
@philscomputerlab
@philscomputerlab 5 лет назад
Yea Protected Mode games will not work with the driver, but if you are motivated enough, you can have a crack at patching the game for native support.

53€ is a bit steep. Since Nuked OPL (an OPL3 emulator) is now considered bit-perfect (meaning no difference to real hardware), I wonder if a cheaper Raspberry Pi could be used instead. And you get the benefit of being able to also emulate MT-32 using Munt with it.
@philscomputerlab
@philscomputerlab 5 лет назад
I'm not up to date with latest prices with Raspberry Pi, but I remember looking into this with Fluid Synth and Munt. Once you add up everything, like SD card, PSU (I don't think you can power it through the USB port on a Thin Client) it's certainly not cheap. Add a MIDI interface as well, plus AFAIK you also need a USB sound card? So yea, it sounds great on paper and at first glance. Do you have a video maybe showcasing your solution? Would be interesting to watch.

Hi Phil, nice video and a good rundown on what it does do and what it cannot. 2 questions 1. what if a pc has LPT1 and LPT2 , can you install in either port or it is hard coded to lpt1: 2. what if you have just one parallel port and you want a pass through to your printer rather than pulling the sound card out all of the time While you mentioned everything just noting the first days comments, maybe a part 2 segment of connecting to a laptop and also a PC that has no internal sound card eg base XT/286/386/486 - this should satisfy the repeat questions Any thoughts on the other options SP2 Dreamblaster, CVX4 paralell, OPL2PLT i am pretty sure you have made videos for these items as well Regards George
@philscomputerlab
@philscomputerlab 5 лет назад
1. You can use either port, just run ADLIPT LPT2 or ADLIPT LPT1 to tell it which one you use. 2. Not sure about that one I have reviewed OPL2LPT. The OPL3LPT is the replacement, same price but SMS components and can do Stereo FM thanks to OPL3. The device is really straight forward, I see no need to do another video.

I'm mostly surprised that it mainly has AdLib functionality, seeing as the AdLib was an OPL2, and this is an OPL3, which was used in the SB16 and PRO. I guess that's the current driver limitation?

It's pretty awesome seeing adlib added in such a way to old computers. The 8-Bit Guy did a similar review some time ago, and certainly adlib is better than pc speaker. But I'd probably still use DOSBox over this to gain the sound blaster compatibility. I know there's been some effort to run DOSEmu + Linux autoboot to have a DOS-like experience, and that'd allow emulating sound blaster while having near native performance. I'm currently tracking DOSEmu2, a fork that adds virtualization support, which sounds rather interesting. Unfortunately, it still has some definite hiccups.
@philscomputerlab
@philscomputerlab 5 лет назад
I tried running DOSBox on such a 1 GHz Thin Client, and only old and basic games run well. You also have to optimise settings, anything fancy like MUNT emulator, or pixel perfect patch, and it falls apart.
@boomerkuwanger3700
@boomerkuwanger3700 5 лет назад
@@philscomputerlab It's unfortunate to hear that, but I'm not entirely surprised. DOSBox is clearly being developed on newer systems where I'm fairly certain a lot of sub-optimal solutions are being used. That's why I'm hopeful that DOSEmu2 gets to a state to be a useful replacement for DOSBox on Linux systems since virtualization should mean even with sub-optimal solutions there should be a massive amount of breathing room for emulation of things like MUNT, Gravis, 3dfx (there's at least some discussion of it), etc. Still, it's very far from some sort of solution today.

Its a shame that it has no option to passthrough the remaining LPT pins. I use on my 286 DOS laptop a LPT2LAN (RJ45) adapter which works perfectly fine with modern LAN networks, drivers are tiny so DOS + Drivers + IRC Client fit on a single floppy.

@shiva_MMIV 5 лет назад
Without going into much technical detail, first you need to write a driver to access the chip, which is already very complicated, then you have to emulate somehow the FM sound that most DOS games expect and then you have to patch the games to add support to them (DOS games don't use standard drivers, hardware support was built in the games not in the OS) so it's highly unlikely that you ever see a realtek sound driver for DOS.
