This movie in part inspired me to upgrade my home theatre to 4K HDR and start collecting UHD blu-rays. I saw Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX at the theatre and knew I would want to rewatch it many times, and 1080p just wasn’t going to cut it.
Many 4k players upscale blu rays to 4k. Although it's not true 4k, there isn't much difference between them on films that have released over the last few years.
@Jun-tz7wc many 4k releases come with the blu ray included, you can compare them and see its a very small difference on new 4k players. The only huge difference is the price.
@@MrMark1 HDR is a big upgrade. A guy does a side by side blu ray to 4K UHD Blu ray for many movies, it's a big difference. (In Search of Physical Media is the youtube channel check it out).
One movie being the reason to upgrade your entire home theater is legitimately the highest praise possible. Such an amazing film, I saw Oppenheimer 3 times in 70mm IMAX and once in a standard 70mm showing, I can’t believe I haven’t gotten sick of it, I’m probably gonna end up watching it again when I get my grubby fingers on this disc. Great review as always!
I purchased my Oppenheimer on 4k yesterday, saw it last night and it is unbelievable, spectacular image and sound. I had not seen in in Imax, it was s regular movie theatre, but last night made up for the long wait. Thank you to Chris Nolan for your love of movies and physical media.
Regarding the flicker, you can also notice this in The Dark Knight/Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet on 4K. It only stands out in brighter scenes. I believe it's an artifact of transferring the 70mm footage as detailed as possible.
I just commented the same thing up above. I really noticed it during Dunkirk and thought it was my TV at first. I’ve also noticed it during scenes in no time to die, and the Batman, but they are less noticeable
People aren't used to seeing it these days because nearly everything is shot digitally and Nolan is one of the few heroes keeping film alive. There's a good reason movies have long been called "flicks"!
@@yommers the reasons movies flicked was due to poor upkeep of the bulbs during projection. That’s why they flickered or were called flicks. I don’t think that applies to Nolan’s movies. A ton of other movies on film don’t flicker. I’m curious if it’s more to do with the imax or 70mm format specifically.
I saw this in 70mm IMAX so the bar was extremely high. This disc didn't disappoint at all. I had some of the same reactions to the beautiful photography as I did in the theater
I saw it in 70mm imax as well. Didn’t noticed any flickering it just seemed like a super smooth image to me. It was honestly hard to tell it was film because it looked so true to life.
I was lucky enough to have my 4K blu-ray steelbook combo arrived four days before the official release. Let me tell you ; the 4K looks amazing, but what shocked me the most is the regular blu-ray, it is simply phenomenal. The sharpness and contrast is like almost nothing I've seen on 1080p blu-ray, when I first load it I though for a second this was the 4K one, the colors are a bit more muted than the 4K, but it's that good.
Yes it's true. Christopher Nolan said that he's worked on both the Bluray version and the 4K version. So no matter what format you buy, it will be the definitive version of his film as he wants everyone to buy this movie rather than streaming.
@@sehajbirnarula7639he also had a good point on streaming services can pull the plug anytime they want , so it's best to own physical media save with videogames
Nolan mixes all his movies in 5.1 for both theatrical and home release. Oppenheimer sounded absolutely incredible on my system, the guy knows what he’s doing. 😊 My seat was shaking during several scenes, especially with the feet stomping on the bleachers.
One of my favorite movies of the year, and I haven’t loved Nolan’s last few movies. Grabbed my copy Day One from Walmart, the standard 4K Blu-ray. I think it was the last one on the shelf. Shocked but not surprised that I saw it selling out so fast!
I still have not seen this film. I need to watch it. I am thrilled to hear that this is selling out all over. It sends the message physical media is still in a high demand. The iconic edition you showed, one way they could limit the scratch possibility, is to put the discs inside of the white envelopes. They literally cost less than a penny. And could make those iconic cases really the way to go. 🤷♂️
Remember each frame on film is like taking an individual picture. The light may not be exactly the same on each frame. Thus the beauty of film! I’m a fan of a 5.1 system. It feels more authentic almost like analog records to digital music.
So glad that Christopher Nolan shot the movie on 70mm film! Which is one of the best format for the videophiles in 4K mastering! Also flickering isn’t a big deal, because when we used to go to theaters, moviegoers tolerated film flickering and scratches. I like owning a movie copy that has the specs of from an IMAX camera!
The flicker in film projection comes from the switch between 2 frames of films. The images moves through a projector on screen and you notice the flicker only on bright scenes. When I saw 2001 or Hateful 8 in 70mm, the flicker is there. It’s awesome Nolan reproduced that for the 4K.
Jeff over here just showing off his Oppenheimer PACKAGE! Happy for ya Jeff and glad you enjoyed the 4K blu ray of this film. I have owned the film for almost a week now and have been rewatching it non stop! It's fantastic. That opening "Can you hear the music?" sequence was sooo beautiful. It is definitely one of the best 4K films to own!
We love DTS MA 5.1!!! Stick with what works ..and works most for MOST systems too. We have plenty of speakers for well recorded audio. Not turning our front room into swiss cheese. New gear from top to bottom for 'atmos'..... Nope. You always do a good job on film reviews FAH. Keep at it!🤝Our 4k arrives tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving!
Can't wait to pick this up when it's not sold out everywhere haha. I saw it 4 times in IMAX 70MM at two different locations and it's easily one of the best theater going experiences of my life - it just completely takes your breath away. I think only Interstellar in the same format beats it. Also, love to see how much your channels have been blowing up lately! Keep up the great stuff.
Congrats on the SVS subs. I really enjoy their cables. The quality you get for the price is great. I've been switching out my audio cables with all SVS.
I don't recall the last time I've seen a more popular in-demand 4k and especially steelbook. I've been to several stores and all i can find are the DVD and bluray versions. Blade Runner 2049 was the last steelbook I've seen that has been so in demand
Not just the steelbook apparently. I'm away visiting family until next week. I was gonna wait until I got back to Cali to go to a best buy in person to pick up the slipcover...but could see that even that was disappearing nearly everywhere. Had to go ahead and place the order on their website for store pickup, since Amazon now has it at $50 smh... Really hope they take care of that slip and it doesn't get tossed around too much until I get back next week
I’m jealous that they sent you the hardcover of American Prometheus, and Unleashing Oppenheimer. Awesome of Universal to send you the goodies. I’m not into vinyl anymore but would have loved the free gift too.
Since i couldnt get my hands on the steelbook, I'm likely gonna buy that hardcover book mainly to have that same artwork on the shelf as a companion piece. I have a really nice BTS book for Dune too
Same here, dude. I checked every day for the steelbook for 3 weeks. Still can't figure out why BB didn't have it for preorder like all their others. Up to about a year and a half ago I was thinking what's the big deal with steelbooks. I'll probably won't ever sell mine and I'm not flipping them. However, I know there's a lot of collectors out there and I'm a collector of something else. And just like my other hobby all it takes is buying the first couple and you're hooked. I'm not spending $200 on ebay for it. Unless you or someone enlighten me to something I may be missing. 😎
It’s interesting you mentioned the flicker. I had briefly noticed this on the 4k of Dunkirk. Specifically near the beginning when he’s running away & ends up on the beach. Again, it’s on the brighter areas of the screen. Sony a80L. Panasonic ub820 for reference. Happens on an lg c1 as well.
@@UnitedRedDevil13I'm torn about going with 65"... On one hand it's the perfect size for my bedroom and I can see 77" being obnoxiously big for that same room, but on the other hand there's this constant "MORE! MORE!" that could never be fully satisfied lol Edit: LG C2 btw
I got the Walmart icon edition because it had by far my favorite cover (Oppenheimer hasn’t had the best posters) and was pretty impressed with the packaging; kind of felt like a Criterion. My only complaints are the picture of what’s inside the packaging on the top left of the slip-cover. I don’t need you to advertise what’s inside the package that I already own! It makes me wanna throw away the slip-cover. The disks also slip out pretty easily if you even slightly tip the case upside down. All around though, excited to watch it; I was anticipating this video!
I opted for the iCON edition because the steelbook was all gone. I like it very much though the disc slipping out is a bit of a disappointment also my 4K slip is very squished making the disc hard to get, having to place my fingertips on it. I hate the design of the disc and how they are kept. I hoped for them to be disc trays.
@@BALAAABOYYYY222 I also purchased the icon edition and the discs were hard to slide out of the cardboard sleeve. I had to use a soft disc cleaning cloth to grip the edge of the disc and slide it out of the sleeve. Wasn't easy sliding it back in the sleeve either.
I'm just watching your review now Jeff as I managed to finish putting mine together. Very interesting. We didn't pick up on flicker at all but I will look for it. I think it's likely we didn't pick anything up because we're both more used to looking at films rather than videos. Send that steelbook over please!!! John.
Your reviews are phenomenal and i anticipate them everytime. Please keep up the great reviews. Love that you give an unbiased view both good and bad. I hope they continue but we know the industry and masses are moving the tech onwards. But i will enjoy as much as possible while i can and have built a ridiculous library that should keep me busy going forward.
I managed to get the BB steelbook! But a buddy of mine had also preordered and his got cancelled last week for some reason. Quite tragic what’s going down with BB’s DVD sales.
Great review bud. Got my 4k today and going to watch over the weekend. Can't wait to revisit as only saw it once at BFI IMAX London. I've also got the making of book you showed too. It's incredible and like you say a brilliant companion to the film. I have American Prometheus and the Screenplay. I just need the orange vinyl soundtrack 😂
Have just upgraded my movie theater to a Sony 4k projector and both the projektor and Oppenheimer is on the way. Looking forward to se the movie again at home.
I think the flickering you are seeing is just the shutter of a projector or the film scanning equipment. Its much easier to see those artifacts on bright scenes.
I do like the Steelbook and Icon Edition but not for $35-37, lol. I’ll get the regular one since it’ll have the same bonus disc and three hours of features.
I just watched it; and what I said when I left the cinema, after seeing it the first time...The Best Film Ever....IMO, the BEST Nolan Film, and the BEST 21st Century Film EVER made! :D
I noticed the flicker, but I also noticed it in Dunkirk on some of the wide shots of the sky so it didn’t bother me. Felt very filmic and natural like you said.
Couldn’t agree more the 4k release is killer. Highly recommend you read The Bio it’s amazingly detailed and really tells his story so much more . You really get a sense of all the behind the scenes backstabbing that Strauss engaged in . It’s a massive story but a very engrossing read
I bought the 4K icon edition and my one complaint in the packaging is that the discs are hard to remove in and out of the cardboard sleeve. But the 4K transfer is fantastic and the movie is an awesome historical drama of the Manhattan Project and the success and tribulations of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the so called 'Father of the Atomic Bomb'.
I got to my local Best Buy right as they opened and they didn't even have the steelbook in stock so I went with the slipcover. It was strange though, they had the stand topper with the steelbook advertised but it didn't look like any of the Best Buys in my area even got a shipment of the steels. 😭 Oh well.
Just wanted to share this. There's also another variant of the steelbook you can find in select regions(for example it was exclusive to Amazon UK), which has same cover art as of the ICON edition's.
It's not just that Nolan shoots on large format film. He also uses a "camera-out" workflow whenever possible that avoids any sort of intermediate digital scans and digital "improvement" upon the negative which has been standard for decades on film-sourced movies. Most of Oppenheimer never went to ones and zeros until the last step of the workflow when it was scanned for final distribution (except for cases where dupe prints of the IP would have been struck for film projection). Generational loss is mitigated and we get to see all of those beautiful "flaws" from the film source (i.e., "flickering").
4k Oppenheimer discs sold out everywhere where I live; had to settle for the last blu ray copy at my local Best Buy. Hoping they release more on 4K soon!
I can't get a copy locally. I ordered one on Amazon after the first wave was sold out. I'm getting a deliver date of dec 9 - 11th. I'm just amazed a movie like this being sold out on disc. Very rare to see. Steelbook? What steelbook. Disappeared like a fart in the wind.
I am thrilled to own a copy for this movie. I haven't seen it anywhere, so my expectation is high. For your info, most of IMAX movies in 4K disc are stored in HDR10+ video and DTS:X audio. But I'm fine with back to basic.
I watched Oppenheimer in theatres in True IMAX 70mm and in regular at Cineplex and the 15 Perforation 70mm true IMAX experience was the best way of watching it.
Sorry I didn’t see it in theaters. Bought the 4k blind and watched it on my Nebula Cosmos Laser projector, and it was the best damned blind buy I’ve ever made!
Lucked out on the last copy of the Icon edition thanks to walking my dog, saw it twice on regular 70MM and the image is retained! Also picked up the Soavi bundle from Severin and eXistenZ from Vinegar Syndrome!
