From www.tomharold.com comes Opportunity, a rolling ball sculpture by artist Tom Harold. It measures 52.5" x 33" x 11" and is made entirely of welded steel, clear coated to prevent rust. It features a motor-driven chain lift effortlessly supplying marbles to the topmost track that then divides into two tracks via a tipper-style track splitter. Once on their way, the marbles encounter a number of entertaining devices including a chime, four tone-emitting ball drops, three 360-degree loops, two spirals, wavy track, a four-ball collector, and a coil plus elements made from tubing, welded rings and over 51 feet of track with dips, curves and bends. To check out additional art by Tom Harold and to inquire about creating a truly singular piece of fascinating art that fits your own personal vision, contact the artist at www.tomharold.com.

Thanks, Michelle! It was fun and challenging to think up all of it and then actually make it a reality. I'm very glad to hear your kids enjoy it. It's very cool to know that I can make kids happy!

Thanks a bunch, Sandy! Since I created it with the idea that it would have some of its own unique sounds I wanted that to be heard. Glad it came through well.

Tom, this is absolutely, mind-blowingly, outstanding! Not only is it a lot of work, but it's a work of mechanical (and musical) art. Nicely done, Tom. You are clearly in the big leagues of kinetic sculpture. Roll on!

Glad you enjoyed it! Patience is probably the biggest requirement when creating rolling ball sculpture. There is a group on Facebook that is very helpful with questions you might have. Best of luck!

Thank you for the compliments, spcalan. The rod is 1/8" which I believe converts to 3mm. Marbles are 1", which is 25mm. I use a TIG welder, Miller Maxstar 150STH, to be exact. There is a Yahoo email list for rolling ball sculpture builders. If you are interested in building one, I highly recommend checking it out. It is a wealth of information.

Thanks so much, Brian, and I want to let you know that I really like your video featuring various gate mechanisms. I am going to favorite that thing and come back and revisit it when I need some fresh ideas for future projects.

Well, we all have to start somewhere, and it sounds like your first effort was fully successful except for some materials issues that were beyond your control. One out of two isn't bad! It takes some practice to become good at soldering. My first sculpture was soldered copper. It helps a lot to have a jig to keep the track evenly spaced, but I bend my loops and turns by hand, sometimes with help from pieces of pipe. Keep at it and things will surely improve!

Very nice work. Enjoyable to watch. Questions - what size stainless steel tubing, what size marbles, and how did you weld the track ( stick weld? ).. Thanks

Hi Tom. what motor do you use on RBS? 24V 30RPM?
@TomHaroldArt
@TomHaroldArt 8 лет назад
+enrique abzueta 30rpm is way too fast. Use between 4 and 6rpm for a chain lift like this one.

Thanks for the information. I have tried to build 2.. one out of this material - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dYYfJAMP-BE.html but the track became greasy and stained from the black wire. I like that idea.... but messy. My second one was 100% out of copper, ( but without any knowledge of bending, sculpting, welding,) basically giving it no chance.. of course I failed. I am thinking that I will need some sort of jig or tool to make the correct corner bends and to make the evenly spaces tracks.
