I am an artist from Indiana who works with kinetic metal sculpture. I enjoy the wonderful creative opportunities supplied through the manipulation of metal and motion. For more information about my sculpture, see www.tomharold.com. I write on the subject of general creativity, sculpture and other associated topics at blog.tomharold.com/.

Nice work Tom. Any Ideas for adding an elevator?
@TomHaroldArt

This one was specifically created to be manually operated. I imagine I could figure out a way to add a lift if it was requested, though. You just need to get creative.

Great video Tom. Can you use a stick weld instead or is the surface area too small to strike an arc and weld successfully?
@TomHaroldArt
@TomHaroldArt 3 года назад
I encourage anyone to try and see what works for them. I think it would be a challenge to make a small, clean weld using a stick welder, but I am sure a talented stick guy could make the joint and get it finished off nicely. MIG welding can do the job, as can silver soldering or brazing if you're looking for alternatives to TIG.

@TomHaroldArt
@TomHaroldArt 3 года назад
Thanks very much for the compliments. I do some basic planning, such as deciding where the lift will go and elements such as the tall coil and any other major ones that will occupy a fair bit of space or width and whatnot. The rest of it is designed as I go according to what feels right.

Wow.. you're just GREAT buddy... can you perhaps tell me, if there is a way to fix the iron without this technique.. like soldering iron or it must be exactly the same way you did it :( ?
@TomHaroldArt
@TomHaroldArt 4 года назад
Thank you for your compliments. You can use many types of metal. I started out soldering copper. You can solder brass also. Brazing is another way to join metals. You can use plain steel and MIG weld it, which is cheaper and easier to start out. Check my web site for more information and other videos www.tomharold.com

Olá sou do Brasil. Gostei do seu trabalho e Queria saber que tipo de arame você usa.
@TomHaroldArt
@TomHaroldArt 4 года назад
Muito Obrigado. O fio que uso é de aço inoxidável. São 3 mm. Você pode usar qualquer fio que quiser, mas esteja seguro. Algum metal emite gás venenoso quando aquecido. Cobre, latão, aço simples são todos bons.

The addition of the wood blocks, xylophone and bel-hop bell made it all the more engaging. Encourages people, especially families, a reason to visit that particular library when they get bored from the zoo, museum or public aquarium. Thanks for the upload =)
@TomHaroldArt
@TomHaroldArt 4 года назад
Thank you so much, Chris. That bell was actually a metal pipe cap. I saw them in the steel shop when I was picking up supplies, picked it up, struck it and said, "I'll take two of these, please." They have the most pleasant tone. The library tells me that they have groups of children who visit regularly and always want to see "the ball machine." It is very gratifying to see it being enjoyed by so many.

Oh how much better this video would be if it was not obfuscated by the useless And childish background music. Why oh why must videographers add noise and irritating Distracting sounds to their videos? Do you not understand the beauty of silence? Do you think everyone is a twitchy juvenile who must have constant twitching noise to keep them engaged with the flowing movement of the art video art? WTF? Your background music stinks, and I know I can turn off the sound. Better yet, I can turn off the whole video.
